Celebrating the centennial of Saul Leiter’s birth, the official retrospective of a revolutionary figure in twentieth-century photography.

Saul Leiter photographed and painted nearly every day for over sixty years, amassing an enormous archive, most of which remained unseen during his lifetime. Finding inspiration within a few blocks of his apartment in lower Manhattan, he was a master at discovering beauty in the most ordinary places. Celebrated today for his evocative colour photographs of New York in the 1950s and 1960s, which were unknown in their day, Leiter also found success as a fashion photographer for Harper’s Bazaar. All the while he was shooting black-and-white street scenes on his daily walks, and nudes and intimate portraits back home, while continuing his painting explorations with abstract watercolours, whimsical sketchbooks and painted photographs.

Created in collaboration with the Saul Leiter Foundation, this definitive monograph brings together these diverse yet interconnected bodies of work – including much that was previously unpublished – to reveal the complete artist for the first time.

About the Authors:

Saul Leiter was born in 1923 in Pittsburgh. He pioneered a painterly approach to colour photography in the 1940s and produced covers for fashion magazines such as Esquire and Harper’s Bazaar before largely withdrawing from public attention in the 1980s. The publication in 2006 of his first collection, Early Color, inspired an avid ‘rediscovery’ that has since led to worldwide exhibitions and the release of a documentary, In No Great Hurry: 13 Lessons in Life with Saul Leiter (2013). He died in New York in 2013.
Margit Erb is the founder and director of the Saul Leiter Foundation, which is dedicated to preserving Leiter’s art and legacy.
Michael Parillo is the Associate Director of the Saul Leiter Foundation.

The first extraordinary art book created through promtography. The artist and author has created the images, not with paint and brush but with AI.

This is an incredible selection of images, created through promtography. The artist Annika Nordenskiöld has used AI as a tool to portray her dreams and inner fantasies. None of the places, people or creatures in this book exist in the physical realm. Instead, they are conjured from the sum of human experience in our deep collective well. “I press enter and four versions of an image start appearing in the darkness. I have prompted deliberately, starting with characters and themes, the mood, and what matters most. Adding lesser details towards the end. I do not reference any existing work or artist, but I am specific with the time and setting. Slowly layers are added, and shapes are taking form.” The result is a book that is both beautiful and intriguing.

About the Author:

Annika Nordenskiöld is an established painter and sculptor in Sweden, that has chosen to use digital tools to create her art. She has had numerous exhibitions throughout the years, but the biggest exhibition success has been with the images presented in this book. In October 2023, Annika won the world’s first artificial intelligence art award, 'Prompted Peculiar' at the Ballarat International Foto Biennale, Australia.

Magnum Magnum showcases the best of Magnum Photos, celebrating the vision, imagination and brilliance of its photographers – from the acknowledged 20th-century greats to the modern masters and rising stars of our time

Since its founding in 1947 by Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger and David ‘Chim’ Seymour, Magnum Photos - the legendary co-operative - has powerfully chronicled the peoples, cultures, events and issues of the time. Now, following its 75th anniversary, Magnum Photos and Thames & Hudson join forces to publish an updated and expanded edition of the original hit publication Magnum Magnum (2007), which was previously presented in three formats and sold over 200,000 copies worldwide.

Organized by photographer, Magnum Magnum is built upon a founding concept that made Magnum such a unique creative environment; a collaborative process where each of the four founders picture edited the other’s photographs. This book evokes the same creative spirit, with each photographer selecting and critiquing six key works by another of the agency’s 87 photographers along with a commentary explaining the rationale behind their choices.

This new edition adds the 25 photographers who have joined Magnum in the last 15 years. With more than 150 new photographs and over 700 pages, this book is the definition of an updated classic.

About the Authors:

Brigitte Lardinois is a Reader in Understanding of Public Photography at the London College of Communication, University of the Arts London. Lardinois’ association with Magnum began in 1995 when she set up the Cultural Department of their agency in London. She has been involved in group exhibitions as well as solo shows – working closely with Henri Cartier-Bresson, Martin Parr, Josef Koudelka, Eve Arnold, Elliott Erwitt and many others.

Timeless, evocative and hauntingly beautiful: a retrospective monograph by a truly innovative image maker whose female gaze transformed fashion photography.

American photographer Deborah Turbeville defies classification. She belongs to no school or movement. Her unique visual signature has been recognizable since her emergence as a major talent in the 1970s. Her images are evocative, difficult to date at first glance, and seem dreamlike to our 21st-century eyes. Turbeville stands apart from her male contemporaries, whose hard-edged, highly sexualized photographs of women now seem to be of their time in comparison with Turbeville’s very different representation of beauty.

This book focuses on the area of Turbeville’s practice where her genius as an artist can be found: photocollage. In contrast to her contemporaries in fashion photography, she was deliberately playful with her images: xeroxing, cutting, scraping and pinning prints together, writing in the margins and creating narrative sequences. Her work is located far from single, glossy images. It inhabits a liminal zone between art and commerce.

Built upon extensive research in the Deborah Turbeville archive, the work shown spans commercial and personal projects, with many images published for the first time. With texts by Vince Aletti, Anna Tellgren and Felix Hoffmann, this book brings into the spotlight the ways in which Turbeville redefined fashion photography, moving away from the sexual provocation and stereotypes assigned by male photographers to an idea of femininity on her terms. Deborah Turbeville: Photocollage will be an essential publication with modern relevance for all with a passion for fashion photography.

About the Author:

Nathalie Herschdorfer is Director of Photo Elysee-Museum of Photography in Lausanne. Her previous books include Coming into Fashion, Afterwards: Contemporary Photography Confronting the Past and Body: The Photography Book. Deborah Turbeville (1934–2013) was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Her fashion photography featured in Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Nova and The New York Times and for fashion labels including Commes des Garcons, Guy Laroche and Charles Jordan. Her archive is held by The MUUS Collection.

An in-depth look at the many ways women around the world helped shape modern photography from the 1920s to the 1950s as they captured images of a radically changing world

During the 1920s the New Woman was easy to recognize but hard to define. Hair bobbed and fashionably dressed, this iconic figure of modernity was everywhere, splashed across magazine pages or projected on the silver screen. A global phenomenon, she embodied an ideal of female empowerment based on real women making revolutionary changes in life and art ― including photography. This groundbreaking, richly illustrated book looks at those “new women” who embraced the camera as a mode of expression and made a profound impact on the medium from the 1920s to the 1950s.

Thematic chapters explore how women emerged as a driving force in modern photography, bringing their own perspective to artistic experimentation, studio portraiture, fashion and advertising work, scenes of urban life, ethnography and photojournalism. Featuring work by 120 photographers, this volume expands the history of photography by critically examining an international array of canonical and less well-known women photographers, from Berenice Abbott, Dorothea Lange and Lola Álvarez Bravo to Germaine Krull, Tsuneko Sasamoto and Homai Vyarawalla. Against the odds, these women produced invaluable visual testimony that reflects both their personal experiences and the extraordinary social and political transformations of the era.

Crewdson's epic photographic trilogy -- a portrait of America a decade in the making

Over the past three decades, Gregory Crewdson has been fleshing out a portrait of middle America, an America gazing wide-eyed at the glimmers of a fading dream.

His cinematographically staged photos have pieced together the fragments of a twilight world tinged with numbness.

This book brings togetherthree bodies of work made between 2012 and 2022. Envisaged as a trilogy, they previde unique insight into a decade of creation and offer a comprehensive view of the universe that hasposited Gregory Crewdson as one ofthe major figures of photography.

This trilogy isintroduced by Fireflies, a pivotal series if one is to grasp the intimate undercurrents in Gregory Crewdson's artwork.

____________

Considered one of the greatest exponents of staged photography, Gregory Crewdson has drawn a portrait of middle America, enclosed in the intermediate spaces of modest-sized cities, an America with eyes wide open towards the lights of a dream in exhaustion, already exhausted, already dilapidated. His photographs, staged with the devices of the cinema, have assembled the fragments of a twilight world, populated by the neutral faces of its protagonists, frozen like ruins that ignore themselves in a present cracked by the oracular manifestations of imperceptible decompositions.

This book brings together for the first time the trilogy conceived between 2012 and 2022. It unfolds an unprecedented vision of a decade of creation and reveals the intimate and political sides of the universe that has established Gregory Crewdson as one of photography’s major figures. Cathedral of the Pines and An Eclipse of Moths vibrate with an intimacy crystallized by places deeply connected to the life of the photographer, his partner and collaborator Juliane Hiam and their children. At the same time, these two series shift towards a political dimension which finds its most subtle expression in the black and white photographs of Eveningside which close the trilogy in 2022. To this trilogy is added the Fireflies series, produced in 1996, which is essential for capturing the intimate movements that operate in his art.

The book itself is a thing of beauty, an oversize feast of more than 1,000 all-new photographs and 544 pages, every spread and page designed to showcase these mesmerizing photographs and hold just enough of Schultz’s lively text that we know why it is we’re looking at them. Bask in Formula One glory with this 240-page, large-format tribute to all 33 F1 World Champions, featuring exhilarating photography and expert commentary.

Since the Grand Prix’s start in 1950, just 33 men have achieved the accolade of F1 World Champion. For the first time, legendary F1 commentator Maurice Hamilton and award-winning photographers Bernard and Paul-Henri Cahier bring the heroes of this iconic sport together, in a stunning photographic portrayal of the poise, skill and winning mindset that separates the fast from the furious, the elite from the talented.

- A foreword by Bernie Ecclestone, former chief executive of the Formula One Group

Debate has raged over which driver is the best of the best. It is impossible to say. But that will not deter energetic and informed discussion, usually predicated on a personal preference swayed by affection. Each of these champions will have experienced and delivered pulse-raising performances many times over.

With this handsome homage to the most ferocious of sports and the incredible sportsmen who drive at the edge in pursuit of greatness, it is time to choose your favorite F1 Champion.

About the Authors:

Maurice Hamilton has been part of the Formula One scene since 1977 and was the Observer's motor racing correspondent for 20 years. He has written more than 20 books as well as commentating on Formula One for BBC Radio. He is now actively involved with the online community on Twitter and writes several blogs whilst continuing to write books about racing.

The Cahier Archive is the only photographic collection covering the history of the Formula One Championship to have remained in the hands of its original authors. Two photographers have built this archive: Bernard Cahier and his son Paul-Henri, giving the collection two very different styles. Bernard was a reporter and had the gift to make people truly live events through his pictures. Paul-Henri, on the other hand, has always leaned towards an artistic approach to photography. The common ground of their photos though, is that they always go beyond the illustrative dimension.

Compiled and edited by a team of leading Formula One journalists, and featuring written contributions from drivers, team principals and technical directors.

Taboo meets aesthetics

Over the past two decades Frieke Janssens has built a solid reputation in staged photography. Her visual language is both surprising and playful and reveals a great sense of humor. It is often redolent with tension and her works exude an unspoken, tragic undercurrent. Janssens' images are sumptuously beautiful, but touch upon subjects that aren't: death, smoking, drinking, and the battle between the sexes. This combination of taboo and pure aestheticism marks her style, hence: The Sweetest Taboo.

About the Author:

When a Frieke Janssens photograph appears in a major Belgian magazine it does not go unnoticed, but it is her own publications that have garnered worldwide acclaim as meticulous series of photographs, impressively framed with a strong aesthetic attraction. Janssens has opened exhibitions everywhere, from Vladivostok to New York. In 2016, she held an overview exhibit called 20 Years of Photography in Antwerp.

Mothmeister's second book: even greater and more unearthly

In Dark & Dystopian Post-Mortem Fairy Tales, Mothmeister - the two-headed alter ego of the anonymous Belgian artistic duo - pays tribute to the many muses that incited its unsettling and eccentric dreamworld.

These range from artists around the globe, legendary figures and myths and a quirky taxidermy collection to desolate places where its most grotesque and often melancholic characters were born, such as the macabre Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo, the abandoned unearthly town of Pyramiden in Spitsbergen and the site of the Chernobyl disaster.

All of this flows into a unique fairyland that flirts with the morbid, religious and often clownish, in which taxidermy animals are brought back to life in the most unusual ways.

About the Author:

The dystopian dream world of the two-headed Belgian alter ego Mothmeister intrigues more than 250k Instagram followers worldwide. Their dark, non-stop mutating fairy tale characters pay tribute to taxidermy. The muses of Mothmeister? Their impressive private collection of stuffed animals, masks, costumes, numerous international artists they collaborate with and their untameable wanderlust.
