How have art museums changed in the past century? Where are they headed in the future? Charles Saumarez Smith is uniquely qualified to answer these questions, having been at the helm of three major British institutions over the course of his career.

His story starts with the Museum of Modern Art in New York, one of the first to focus squarely on the art of the present. When it opened in 1939, MoMA’s boldly modernist building represented a stark riposte to the neoclassicism of most earlier museums. About the Author:

Mina Gregori is an italian art historian, member of the 'Accademia dei Lincei', emeritus professor of Modern Art History at University of Florence. A disciple of Roberto Longhi. She graduated from Bologna University and she continued her university career in Florence, gaining a Master's. Among her studies, translated all over the world, are essays and monographs about Northern Italy paintings from the fifteenth century to the seventeenth century, including those by Caravaggio on whom she is considered a world-class expert. She has curated more than 100 exhibitions in Italy and around the world.

Following on the widely read The Future of the Museum: 28 Dialogues, which explored how museums are changing through conversations with today’s generation of museum directors, New York-based author and cultural strategy advisor András Szántó’s new compilation turns its attention to architects. The conclusion of The Future of the Museum was that the “software” of art museums has evolved. Museum leaders are “working to make institutions more open, inclusive, experiential, culturally polyphonic, technologically savvy, attuned to the needs of their communities, and engaged in the defining issues of our time.” It follows that the “hardware” of the art museum must also change. Szántó, who lives in Brooklyn, has been conducting conversations with art-world leaders since the early 1990s, including as a frequent moderator of the Art Basel Conversations series.
