A major survey of the Japanese designers, artisans, manufacturers and technologies that have shaped the world of modern design

A dedication to craft and the finest production quality have been an integral part of culture and day-to-day life in Japan for centuries. For the Japanese, the concept of design is not limited to functionality or materiality, but wholly connected with ancient culture and rituals. In this sense, a chair is much more than what you sit on, a cup more than what you drink from: these objects are to be reflected upon, to be touched and cherished.

As mass manufacturing became widespread in the post-war period, fascinating cross-cultural exchanges began to take place between Japan and the West. These gave rise not only to timeless objects of great beauty and utility, but innovations in materials, form and technology. Far beyond the icons of Japanese design – the perfectly weighted Kikkoman soy sauce bottle, Yanagi’s butterfly stool, the Sony Walkman – the products and objects that have emerged from the country over the past seven decades, few of which have been widely exported, serve to delight and draw admiration. In recent years, a new generation of designers – Nendo, Yoshioka – have taken Japanese creativity into entirely new territory, reconceptualizing the very meaning of design.

No attempt has been made to present a complete overview of Japanese design, until now. Showcasing over eighty designers, hundreds of objects, and contributions from both Japanese and Western design experts, this volume will become the definitive work on the subject for many years to come.

The excellence of Italian design through 100 vases from the beginning of the last century to the present.

What, if anything, sets an “Italian” vase apart from the vast numbers of vases produced worldwide? A vase is both an everyday object and an object that lends itself to a huge variety of interpretations, a field in which Italian designers excel in terms of originality and recognizability (not to mention the inherent “sustainability” of the vase as object, typically made from the most ecological of materials, like clay or silica glass).

The intention behind 100 Vases of Italian Design is to analyse and provide a possible response to the concept of Italian style by exploring one of its most common and enduring expressions.

Materials, forms, tradition, and innovation unfold before readers’ eyes, page after page, helping them seek meaning in the challenge posed by the title: the selection comprises vases — all of which have gone into production, sometimes as a small or very small series — from the past century, from Galileo Chini to Fabio Novembre, spanning the golden era from the 1930s to the 1960s.

Introduced by the essays by Marco Meneguzzo and Enrico Morteo on the concept and the history of Italian vases, the book invites the reader to discover 100 years of materials, forms, tradition and invention.

About the Author:

Art and design historian, author and curator, Marco Meneguzzo teaches History of contemporary art and Museology and Management of exhibition systems at Accademia di Brera, Milan. He is member of the scientific committee of the official archives of Mario Schifano, Vincenzo Agnetti, Marcello Morandini, Letizia Battaglia, Ugo La Pietra and is president of the Giò Pomodoro Archive. Enrico Morteo, architect, critic and historian of design and architecture, collaborates with major international design magazines.

1000 VASES shines a light on unique pieces made by independent designers from over 35 countries

A vase is never merely a container. As Georges Braque once said, "the vase gives form to emptiness": ever since the earliest human civilizations, this object has had a purpose that is greater than its function and it perennially seeks experimentation in shape and expression.

The 1,000 vases presented in this book are an eloquent demonstration of this. They come from 35 different countries and more than 80% have been made by women or independent designers and artists born between 1988 and 1993, each of whom was invited to create a free interpretation of the same archetype, resulting in a spectrum of the infinite creativity inspired by the many possible versions of a single item. Made from an enormous range of materials (ceramic, terracotta, porcelain, metal, wood, glass, as well as natural fibers, industrial waste and recycled plastic), using techniques both ancient and ultra-modern (3D printing) and belonging to different categories (from amphora to jar, jug to carafe), almost all sit on the borderline that simultaneously unites and separates art, design and craftsmanship.

About the Author:

Pier Paolo Pitacco lives and works between Paris and Milan, where he has been at the centre of the most important editorial events related to the success of Italian Style. Responsible for the artistic realization of Uomo Vogue, he then developed the projects of Donna and Mondo Uomo as art director. He has been the Artistic Director also of Elle Italia from 1988 to 1999.

The very first, beautifully illustrated guide to some of the most sought-after portable Art Deco design

In the 1920s and ’30s Art Deco-influenced everything from art and architecture, interiors and furnishings, automobiles and boats, to the small personal objects that are part of everyday life. The items in this thematically structured book demonstrate Deco style at its most alluring. They were then the height of fashion, and are highly prized collectibles today. They demonstrate an era of close cooperation between designers and manufacturers, who aimed to produce goods that were not only fit for purpose but also well made and beautiful.

This informative showcase of portable classics of avant-garde modern design from Britain, Europe (particularly France) and the United States will appeal both to collectors and to anyone with an interest in Deco style and the history of fashion, taste and design. It is the first book to bring together the small collectibles – from cigarette cases and lighters to powder compacts and cosmetics accessories, watches, jewellery, even cameras – that demonstrate the style, glamour and sophistication of the Jazz Age.

Not just a design object, but also the symbol of a particularly Danish way of life.

Lamp design is a field that continues to attract great attention, from both designers and design aficionados. With Poul Henningsen’s iconic PH-lamp as its point of departure the book tells the stories behind 100 Danish lamp designs through text and images, and introduces the reader to the inventions that enabled the first revolutionizing light sources.

Lighting is a key element in ‘hygge’ – the Danish definition of a warm and cosy ambience. Although hard-core functionalists like Henningsen called for form to follow function, real-life factors required them to compromise, and this came to define Danish lamp design: hygge is a crucial quality that had to be included in the design. Thus, the purpose of the modern Danish lamp was– and is – not only to provide light but also to act as a decorative element and to spread a cosy ambience.

About the Author:

Malene Lytken is a trained designer and art and design historian and is an employee with Designmuseum Denmark. Lytken holds a PhD for her dissertation Candles and Lamps in Danish Homes.

Scott Robertson, Thomas Bertling

Видавництво: Design Studio Press

Scott Robertson explains how the human brain interprets the visual world around us, as well as the subject of visually communicating the form of an object in easy to understand, step-by-step lessons through the use of drawings, photography, and even 3D digital imagery that will enlighten and empower an artist.

This book is about the fundamentals of light, shadow and reflectivity; the focus is firmly on helping to improve visual understanding of the world around and on techniques for representing that world.

Rendering is the next step after drawing to communicate ideas more clearly. Building on what Scott Robertson and Thomas Bertling wrote about in How To Draw: Drawing and Sketching Objects and Environments from Your Imagination, this book shares everything the two experts know about how to render light, shadow and reflective surfaces.

This book is divided into two major sections: the first explains the physics of light and shadow. One will learn how to construct proper shadows in perspective and how to apply the correct values to those surfaces. The second section focuses on the physics of reflectivity and how to render a wide range of materials utilizing this knowledge.

Throughout the book, two icons appear that indicate either “observation” or “action.” This means the page or section is about observing reality or taking action by applying the knowledge and following the steps in creating your own work.

Similar to our previous book, How To Draw, this book contains links to free online rendering tutorials that can be accessed via the URL list or through the H2Re app.

About the Authors:

Scott Robertson has almost two decades of experience teaching how to design, draw, and render at the highest college level. He has authored or co-authored 11 books on design and concept art. In addition to books, he has co-produced over 40 educational DVDs with The Gnomon Workshop, of which nine feature his own lectures. For several years, Scott chaired the Entertainment Design department at Art Center College of Design. He frequently lectures around the world for various corporations, colleges, and through his own workshop brand, SRW. In addition to teaching, Scott has worked on a wide variety of projects ranging from vehicle and alien designs for the Hot Wheels animated series Battle Force Five, to theme park attractions such as the Men in Black ride in Orlando, Florida for Universal Studios. Some of his clients include the BMW subsidiary Design-works/USA, Bell Sports, Giro, Mattel Toys, Spin Master Toys, Patagonia, the feature film Minority Report, Nike, Rockstar Games, Sony Online Entertainment, Sony Computer Entertainment of America, Buena Vista Games, THQ, and Fiat to name just a few.

Thomas Bertling has an extensive background as a successful industrial designer and engineer, with a varied array of clients such as Disney, Samsung, and Whole Foods, and a diverse portfolio of completed products on the market, from state-of-the-art medical innovations to combat-ready military vehicles. This hands-on expertise gives him a distinct approach and remarkable edge in addition to being an acclaimed design educator. With substantial experience teaching all levels of perspective sketching and construction to both university students and corporate clients, he has created comprehensive and proven curricula rooted in practicality and real-world application. He currently serves as Director of Entertainment Design at Art Center College of Design as well as teaching several courses and training faculty members.

Form Meets Function. The industrial designs that shape our lives

If you take even the slightest interest in the design of your toothbrush, the history behind your washing machine, or the evolution of the telephone, you’ll take an even greater interest in this completely updated edition of Industrial Design A–Z.

Tracing the evolution of industrial design from the Industrial Revolution to the present day, the book bursts with synergies of form and function that transform our daily experience. From cameras to kitchenware, Lego to Lamborghini, we meet the individual designers, the global businesses, and above all the genius products that become integrated into even the smallest details of our lives.

Alongside star designers like Marc Newson and Philippe Starck and major global brands like Braun and Apple, lesser-known and newcomer entries such as Brompton Bicycles and Enercon wind turbines attest to product design’s restless pace, as well as to today’s most pressing challenges and priorities to which it must turn its creative invention.

George R. Kravis II
ID: 12710
Видавництво: Rizzoli

An ambitious new survey of industrial design from 1900 to the present day in the United States, Europe, and around the world, as told through selected objects from the George R. Kravis II Collection.

Destined to become a new classic in the design genre, this major work summarizes an enormous topic — the creation of everyday objects for mass production and consumption from 1900 to the present — and shows how these products have become both symbols of the modern age and harbingers of our future. It covers the work of the heroes of modern and post-modern design, from the early pioneers — Dreyfuss, Bel Geddes, and Eames — to the leaders in the field today, including Starck, Newson, and Ive.

More than 200 objects from the Kravis Design Center’s collection are highlighted as important exemplars of industrial design. A wide range of media is represented, including furniture, metalwork, ceramics, and plastics. New research by contributing scholars has uncovered illuminating details about each object that help tell a more complete story of design in the past 100 years.

Among the more than 400 photographs, which include a wealth of historical images and ephemera, are those of the objects taken especially for this book and seen as never before, in vibrant colour and precise detail. This concise new history introduces a whole new audience to the topic in a style that is at once educational and accessible.

About the Author

George R. Kravis II has amassed more than 4,000 industrial design objects in his collection at the Kravis Design Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Penny Sparke is Professor of Design History at Kingston University in London.

The life and legacy of eminent designer Peter Schreyer

Meet one of the most influential designers of our time — a book about heritage, creative vision, and leadership, and what design can do for the future. Roots and Wings explore the life and work of Peter Schreyer, one of the most influential car designers of our time. A Renaissance man with an eye for detail and foresight for innovation, he geared himself toward success. Responsible for the births of some of the most iconic cars ever, his industry experience with Volkswagen, Audi, Kia, and Hyundai brought instant classics to the road.

Schreyer embodies a conduit between the West and East — bridging his homeland’s history of automotive design with South Korea, a country that has experienced stratospheric growth on the world stage in just a few decades. Looking at the formative moments and pivotal artistic discoveries that shaped his creative mindset, Roots and Wings is the story of how a man helped two polarizing cultures merge to create something unique and left a mark on history, and the future, in the process.

Born in 1953 in Bad Reichenhall, Peter Schreyer grew up on his parents’ farm, developing a passion for flying and skeleton bob racing. From 1975-1979 he studied industrial design at the University of Applied Sciences in Munich and began to work with Audi first as a student in 1978, subsequently earning an Audi scholarship to study transportation design at the Royal College of Art in London.

In 1980, Schreyer began working with Audi in exterior, interior, and conceptual design, before moving to the Volkswagen group‘s prestigious design studio in California in 1991. After becoming VW’s head of exterior design in 1993, he decided to return to Ingolstadt, shaping Audi’s design strategy as the Director of Design between 1994-2002. Having been part of the Volkswagen group for more than 25 years, Schreyer left his position as Head of Design of the VW group to become Chief Design Officer for Kia Motors in 2006. In 2013, seven years after his arrival in Korea, Schreyer stepped up from his role at Kia to become President of all Kia and Hyundai design centers worldwide and is now, as President & Head of Design Management of the Hyundai Motor Group, responsible for the company’s long-term design vision.

Schreyer has received numerous awards and prizes throughout his career, including an honorary doctorate from the Royal College of Art in recognition of his contributions to automotive design, the “Design Team of the Year” award in 1999 for Audi as well as the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2002.
