One of the most famous and popular books on art ever written

The Story of Art, one of the most famous and popular books on art ever written, has been a world bestseller for over four decades. Attracted by the simplicity and clarity of his writing, readers of all ages and backgrounds have found in Professor Gombrich a true master, and one who combines knowledge and wisdom with a unique gift for communicating his deep love of the subject.

For the first time in many years, the book has been completely redesigned. The illustrations, now in colour throughout, have all been improved and reoriginated, and include six fold-outs. The text has been revised and updated where appropriate, and a number of significant new artists have been incorporated. The bibliographies have been expanded and updated, and the maps and charts redrawn.

The Story of Art has always been admired for two key qualities: it is a pleasure to read and a pleasure to handle. In these respects the new edition is true to its much-loved predecessors: the text runs as smoothly as ever and the improved illustrations are always on the page where the reader needs them. In its new edition, this classic work continues its triumphant progress tirelessly for yet another generation, to remain the title of first choice for any newcomer to art or the connoisseur.

About the Author:

Sir Ernst Gombrich’s standing in the world of art and his popularity with experts and a vast general readership remain unrivalled. Born in Vienna, he came to London in 1936 to work at the Warburg Institute, where he became director from 1959 until his retirement in 1976. He won numerous honors, including a knighthood, the Order of Merit, and the Goethe, Hegel, and Erasmus prizes.

The divine sky: history’s most beautiful celestial atlas

This collection of celestial maps by Dutch-German mathematician and cosmographer Andreas Cellarius (c. 1596 – 1665) brings back to life a masterpiece from the Golden Age of celestial cartography. First published in 1660 in the Harmonia Macrocosmica, the complete 29 double-folio maps and dozens of unusual details reproduced here depict the world systems of Claudius Ptolemy, Nicolaus Copernicus, and Tycho Brahe, the motions of the sun, the moon, and the planets, and the delineation of the constellations in various views.

Cellarius's atlas, superbly embellished with richly decorated borders depicting cherubs, astronomers, and astronomical instruments, features some of the most spectacular illustration in the history of astronomy. This reprint, made from the beautifully hand-colored and complete copy of the first edition in the Library of the Universiteit van Amsterdam, includes a copiously illustrated introduction by Robert van Gent, one of the leading Cellarius experts, summarizing the history of celestial cartography from antiquity to late 17th/early 18th century and illuminating the life and work of Andreas Cellarius. Van Gent also discusses the historical and cultural context and significance of the atlas and provides detailed descriptions of the astronomical and iconographical content of the plates, allowing modern readers to fully appreciate the masterwork of Andreas Cellarius and his publisher, Johannes Janssonius.

The book’s detailed appendix includes a list of constellation figures with short descriptions of their origin and mythology, a list of star names found on the plates, a glossary of technical words, and a bibliography. Though these sumptuous maps have become famous by being depicted on postcards, calendars, portfolios, and even mouse pads, they have rarely been reproduced in book form and never with such comprehensive descriptions and details as this TASCHEN edition. Cellarius’s exquisite renditions of the constellations will excite the astronomer in anyone.

Rarely has a subject been served by a book of this stature. Five years in the making, it covers all aspects of Art Nouveau in France in 624 authoritative pages and 740 illustrations, mostly in colour. Arwas traces the evolution of the movement as it developed, primarily in Nancy and Paris, with the help of carefully chosen illustrations, many never published before. Ranging from the 1900 Paris Exhibition to Paintings, Graphics and Posters and such collecting fields as Furniture, Jewellery, Glass, Ceramics, Book Bindings and Sculpture, the informative, witty text ranges over Architecture, Haute Couture, and the role of Women in Art Nouveau with a particular look at such Theatrical Ikons as Sarah Bernhardt, Loïe Fuller and the Grandes Horizontales. Art Nouveau achieved its national and international diffusion when it reached Paris, taking its name from the Parisian gallery of Siegfried Bing. The Metro entrances and buildings of Hector Guimard are still witness to its brief but extraordinary heyday in the capital, where the concentrated vituperation with which it was greeted helped propagate it as critics, aesthetes and the purchasing public took opposing sides. Reproduced here are rare examples of the great glass of Gallée and Daum; the stunning jewellery of Lalique, Vever and Fouquet; breathtakingly beautiful bronzes; complex polychrome ceramics; magnificent posters, decorative panels and paintings by Mucha, Berthon and Grasset; and book bindings, silver, pewter, walking sticks, and many other collectible objects that bring to life one of the most creative and exciting periods in the history of design. Destined to become the standard book on the subject, both content and design will appeal widely to the connoisseur, the specialist and the collector as well as to the novice who will be introduced to the magical wonders of the style. Detailed biographies of the artists featured, translations of contemporary texts and the bibliography lead to a full understanding of the period.

About the Author
Victor Arwas is an acknowledged authority on the fine and decorative arts of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In over twenty published books he has explored aspects of various movements, and written exhibition catalogues and monographs on individual artists and groups. Several of his books are the standard works on their subject. He is a lifelong collector of paintings, graphics, books, sculpture and objets d'art, and has exhibited and promoted exhibitions at his Editions Graphiques gallery in London as well as in Japan and the United States. He lectures and broadcasts widely.

Who could possibly have forecast on New Year's Eve 1899 that, one hundred years later, painting and sculpture would be only options, not prerequisites? The term "art" has been defined and redefined so many times over the last 100 years that it has gained entirely new social, political, and technological meanings.

Ranging across the full spectrum of disciplines available, including photography and new media, and thematically chaptered to highlight relationships between works and movements, this readable and encyclopaedic masterwork does just what it says on the cover. Whether you want Surrealism or Land Art, Fluxus or Bauhaus, this is your be-all, end-all guide to art of the 20th century.

An undertaking as immensely ambitious as this one deserves to be owned by everyone, which is why we decided to make a special, more compact edition of this two-volume classic in celebration of our 25th anniversary.

About the author:
Klaus Honnef is honorary professor of photography theory at the Kassel Art Academy. He was one of the organizers of documenta 5 and documenta 6 in Kassel, and has been the curator of more than 500 exhibitions in Germany and abroad. He has written numerous books, including TASCHEN’s Contemporary Art (1988), Andy Warhol (1989), and Pop Art (2004).

About the editor:
Ingo F. Walther (1940-2007) was born in Berlin and studied medieval studies, literature, and art history in Frankfurt am Main and Munich. He has published numerous books on the art of the Middle Ages and of the 19th and 20th centuries. Walther's many titles for TASCHEN include Picasso, Art of the 20th Century, and Codices Illustres.

In a new exclusive slipcase, the prestigious four-volume series covering the fundamental events and pivotal works of international art in the twentieth century.

This series offers a complete, up-to-date survey of the artistic culture of the twentieth century through an original, transversal and interdisciplinary analysis. This special edition of the series gathers the four volumes into an exclusive slipcase showcasing a 3D reproduction of a masterpiece by James Rosenquist. The books provide an extraordinary repertory of images and a vast source of information, enriched through “focus on” windows and technical information by experts in the field. The essays investigate and analyse in chronological order the transformations of the world’s artistic culture, the major personalities and the different movements that have characterized the development of modern and contemporary art. Roughly 1700 pages and a considerable number of illustrations provide a broad and composite overview of movements, artists, works and cultural phenomena, in an extraordinary publication that examines in depth the tendencies of modern and contemporary art.

• Ample space is devoted to the critical definitions of contemporary art, the art market and the new way of collecting, to the relationship between art and politics, and to the new, confusing frontiers of photography.
• Major chapters are followed, in alphabetical order, by the biographies of artists accompanied by their most significant works.

Valerio Terraroli teaches History of Modern Art at the University of Verona.

A survey of one of the most controversial epochs art history, the Modern Movement, this text combines a critical eye with a historian's insight into wider trends. It reflects the changes that have swept across the art world since 1960, challenging the old assumptions and certainties. As it reviews the worldwide view, the book's central argument is that the art world is no longer hierarchical but plural, and that its structures - if they exist at all - are provisional. The author charts the progress of contemporary development and points out their sources and interrelationships.

The evolution of style from antiquity to 1888 Originally published in France between 1876 and 1888, Auguste Racinet’s Le Costume historique was the most wide-ranging and intelligent study of clothing ever published.

Covering the world history of costume, dress, and style from antiquity through the end of the 19th century, the great work — “consolidated” in 1888 into 6 volumes containing nearly 500 plates — remains, to this day, completely unique in its scope and detail. Racinet’s organization by culture and subject has been preserved in TASCHEN’s magnificent and complete reprint, as have excerpts from his delightful descriptions and often witty comments. Perusing these beautifully detailed and exquisitely coloured illustrations, you’ll discover everything from the garb of ancient Etruscans to traditional Eskimo attire to 19th-century French women’s couture. Though Racinet’s study spans the globe from ancient times through his own, his focus is on European clothing from the Middle Ages to the 1880s and this subject is treated with exceeding passion and attention to detail.

The Complete Costume History is an absolutely invaluable reference for students, designers, artists, illustrators, and historians; it is also an immensely fascinating and inspirational book for anyone with an interest in clothing and style.

This book provides the first comprehensive overview of the development of Jugendstil around 1900 in Bavaria's leading industrial city. More than two hundred and fifty objects from all areas of the decorative and applied arts illustrate the internationally significant range of "Nuremberg Jugendstil". Nuremberg Jugendstil used a broad variety of materials and its decoration is richly diverse. The focus was on metalworking, yet in addition to cast pewter, bronze, chased copper and silver, there was ivory and wood carving. Jewellery, textiles and ceramics complete the picture. What were known as 'art faiences' produced by the firm of Johann von Schwarz are among the best of the fine Jugendstil ceramics made in Germany. Five introductory chapters analyse the conditions under which the new stylistic movement emerged. It turns out that influences from abroad were just as important as the 'typically German' organisation of the apprenticeship system. Opening up markets for Nuremberg Jugendstil abroad also promoted the influence of international design, especially from Great Britain, on Nuremberg Jugendstil. A selection of designers include: Friedrich Adler, Peter Behrens, Rudolf Bosselt, Hans Christiansen, James Couper, Hermann Friling, Hermann Gradl, Paul Haustein, Josef Hoffmann, George Logan, Johann Lotz Witwe, Carl Sigmund Luber, Joseph Maria Olbrich, Bruno Paul, Richard Riemerschmid, Josef Wackerle, and Vilmos Zsolnay. A selection of workshops include: Gebr. Bing AG, Brand and Stauch, Felsenstein and Mainzer, J. F. P. Hausleiter, Franz Kainzinger, Emil Kellermann, Hans Knorr, Daniel Meinecke, Friedrich Muller, Valentin Oeckler, Walter Scherf and Co., Georg Friedrich Schmitt, Christian Schonamsgruber, J. von Schwarz, Ferdinand Semmelroth, Erhard Topf, Emma Volck, and J. C. Wich.
