For builders of natural homes (straw bale, cob, adobe, rammed earth, and other natural materials), this unique step-by-step guide takes the confusion out of choosing, mixing, and applying natural plasters.

From principles to practicalities, and with every stage of the process illustrated, The Natural Plasters Book details the entire process of plastering with earth, lime, and gypsum for a long-lasting and durable finish. Starting with an overview and history of the natural building movement, the book handles a wide variety of topics including earthen plaster versus cement stucco, tools and techniques of the trade, plaster recipes, and pigmenting plaster or painting walls with natural paints. First-time builders will appreciate tips on common mistakes (and how to avoid them) discussed at each stage of the plastering process. Special focus is paid to the importance of planning and designing for earthen plasters- before building begins.

The only comprehensive guide available on natural plasters, this book is written for the growing number of people who have decided to build their own natural homes as well as for professionals. Heavily illustrated with practical drawings and photographs, it also includes an extensive resource guide listing books, magazines, videos, builders, and suppliers.

Lavishly illustrated with full-colour photographs, drawings, floor and aerial plans, The Sourcebook of Contemporary Green Architecture features today's most noteworthy environmentally-friendly architectural projects. Comprehensive chapters account for the core concerns of all architectural projects (the needs of architects, clients and partners, as well as logistical area and cost management concerns, and energy management), while allowing readers a hands-on understanding of what it takes to envision, create, and develop an environmentally-conscious master plan, building, or landscape design.

Featured projects exhibit a range of sustainable design ideas from bioclimatic strategies to more complex off-the-grid constructions that include passive designs, prefab systems, water-harvesting mechanisms, and green renovations. Projects include building eco-certifications and eco-design solutions to utilize advanced technologies, and both "cost management plans" as well as plans geared toward more lax budgets are featured. All projects included in The Sourcebook of Contemporary Green Architecture have been completed or are ongoing in the 21st century and were chosen as highly successful examples of green architects meeting the individual needs and tastes of their clients. It is the perfect resource for architects, city planners, engineers, and designers to find the knowledge and inspiration to carry us into a "green" architectural future.

Imagine building a house with superior seismic stability, fire resistance, and thermal insulation, using an annually renewable resource, for half the cost of a comparable conventional home. Welcome to the straw bale house! Whether you build an entire house or something more modest-a home office or studio, a retreat cabin or guest cottage-plastered straw bale construction is an exceptionally durable and inexpensive option. What's more, it's fun, because the technique is easy to learn and easy to do yourself. And the resulting living spaces are unusually quiet and comfortable.

The Straw Bale House describes the many benefits of building with straw bales:

- super insulation, with R-values as high as R-50
- good indoor air quality and noise reduction
- a speedy construction process
- construction costs as low as $10-per-square-foot
- use of natural and abundant renewable resources
- a better solution than burning agricultural waste straw, which creates tons of air pollutants

The retro-futuristic epoch is one of the most visually spectacular in architecture’s history.

The utopian buildings of the 1960s and 1970s never go out of style. This book compiles radical ideas, rediscovered photos, and visionary structures.

Driven by idealistic visions, utopian architecture aimed to overcome social divisions and political strife, to put us in touch with nature, and to enable us to live humane, healthy lives. For half a century, it was both hope and inspiration.

The Tale of Tomorrow surveys this diverse twentieth-century phenomenon, featuring renowned works like The House of the Century or the TWA terminal, as well as lesser-known masterpieces, and profiling major thinkers such as Oscar Niemeyer, Le Corbusier, and Eero Saarinen. By digging through archives, corresponding with descendants of departed architects, and restoring photographs, the collection of utopian approaches herein maintains a visual power and infectious optimism.

Looking at past dreams, The Tale of Tomorrow is a call to reclaim our future.

The secrets of plants that cling, grip, and climb, from the inventor of the vertical garden

Patrick Blanc, an artist with a green thumb, has created dozens of his admired botanical tapestries in public and private spaces around the world, including the Marithé & François Girbaud boutique in Manhattan; the Jean Nouvel-designed Quai Branly Museum in Paris; the aquarium in Genoa; the Siam Paragon mall in Bangkok; and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, Japan. In this luscious, oversize, all-color book, he explains how to create plant walls using more than one thousand plants, drawing on his observation of natural milieus, his technique of growing on vertical surfaces, his savoir faire, and his passion for plants.

This book explores the theories, practices and principles of new approaches to solar architecture that foster both design excellence and low-energy use. In response to the challenges of global warming and climate change, design and technology enable architects to achieve greater performance standards while at the same time developing an environmental aesthetic.

The book showcases ten award-winning buildings to illustrate the aesthetic and technological design integration of solar response in contemporary zero-energy and low-energy architecture. For each project there is a detailed examination of the local climate, the design and construction, and the technology used to reduce energy use.

Towards Zero-energy Architecture is a much-needed call for the design professions to redefine architecture to help solve ecological problems.

Extraordinary examples of the world’s most cutting-edge and modern tree houses.

Many children dream of living in a tree. The magic of tree houses has been shaped by a long tradition shared by many cultures. If you still like the idea of living in direct contact with trees, if you fancy giving it a try for a few days, if you would like to build a little hut on your land, or if you are considering the possibility of building a house between the branches of a leafy tree, then this is the book for you.

At its core, Tree Houses illustrates a varied selection of structures built on or hung from trees. Inspiring photographs and drawings show how they can be used as luxury retreats, play forts, and functional lookouts. Sometimes remote and isolated, they enjoy the nostalgic associations with childhood memories.

Inside, you’ll find more than fifty examples of houses that serve very different purposes. They range from functional to capricious, affordable to expensive, and sustainable to bizarre. You’ll see how location provides the inspiration in the design of many of the tree houses inside and how the final product turns these buildings into some of the most enviable real estate in the world.

Branching out. Childhood fantasy meets grown-up savoir faire

The idea of climbing a tree for shelter, or just to see the earth from another perspective, is surely as old as humanity. Tree houses are chronicled in ancient civilizations and their lore crosses through the history of every part of the world where trees grow. This stunningly-illustrated study offers a tour of the best tree houses in the world, some designed by architects, others the work of unknown craftsmen. A teahouse, a restaurant, a hotel, a playhouse for children, or a perch from which to contemplate life - the tree house can take as many forms as the imagination can offer. In times of concern for sustainability and ecological responsibility, the tree house may also be the ultimate symbol of life in symbiosis with nature. Whether rustic or contemporary in style, tree houses make the most of space. Climb into this trove of tree houses and enjoy a new perspective on the world.

  • 50 tree houses from around the world
  • Covers all different styles, from romantic to modern
  • Every house is depicted in several photos as well as one illustration by artist Patrick Hruby from Los Angeles (who also created the book’s cover artwork)
  • Helpful short biographies of all architects

A contemporary, eccentric architect who draws on Japanese tradition, Terunobu Fujimori's designs manage to be simultaneously whimsical, beautifully designed, and environmentally sensitive. The projects in this volume will appeal to both architectural professionals and fans of innovative design.

This book is an in-depth analysis from a formal, design, and cultural point of view of Terunobu Fujimori's entire architectural production to date. It is not a mere collection of his works, but an exhaustive review delving into many sources, which finally offers a complete critical interpretation of his work.

Fujimori has made a name for himself in Japan by crafting beguiling little buildings that refuse to follow any of the usual rules. His hand-made structures look like the nests or cocoons of curious creatures, woven, whittled and thatched with organic, earthy materials that could have been scavenged from the forest floor.

This comprehensive monograph provides a complete review of his boldly imaginative projects. The works are presented through lavish and striking photographs, and the volume includes extensive use of sketches and drawings by Fujimori, a section dedicated to his architectural models, and an original essay written by Fujimori for this publication.

About the Authors:

Mauro Pierconti is an architectural historian. His most recent research focuses on traditional Japanese architecture and the work of important international architects, including Zaha Hadid, Toyo Ito, Terunobu Fujimori, Shirai Seiichi, Carlo Scarpa, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Otto Wagner.

Masuda Akihisa is an architecture photographer. Awarded in 2006 by the Architecture Institute of Japan, his work ranges from the architecture of the Meiji period up to the present day. He has collaborated with Terunobu Fujimori on multiple projects.

Bringing nature into urban environments has always been a challenge; one of the most spectacular solutions to this problem is the vertical garden. Far more than just an unusual decoration attached to a wall, these gardens are an exciting means of bringing life and greenery to a bleak courtyard, a gray city street or a cold modern building.

Vertical Gardens is the first publication to present a collection of the most important examples of this emerging trend. Not content with projecting gardens and cultivating plants on horizontal terrain, those who create vertical gardens apply the principles of hydroponics (a technique of growing plants in water containing dissolved nutrients) and use ingenious framing systems that allow luxuriant compositions of plant life to colonize the exteriors of buildings.

Overshadowing the traditional band of less versatile climbing plants, the extraordinary array of botanical species that thrive with hydroponic cultivation allows for the creation of a limitless variety of living compositions with different textures, patterns, chromatic effects, and aromas.

The aesthetic result is truly stunning and has attracted the attention of architects and designers such as Jean Nouvel, Renzo Piano, and Andrée Putman who, in collaboration with Patrick Blanc, have added the vertical garden to their design vocabularies. There are also projects where entire buildings have been imagined as biological organisms, or as a landscape, like the apartment building by Edouard François in Montpellier, constructed out of a mix of stone, wood, metal, and plants.

Vertical Gardens explores this phenomenon in thematic sections, which are enriched by the reflections of its most innovative practitioners.

This richly illustrated book is essential reading for all professionals or anyone interested in this fertile new area of design.
