1940–1949: Destruction and reconstruction
Fascism's rise and World War II led to widespread destruction in Europe, followed by reconstruction, democratization, and the search for new social values. Italian design groups Alchimia and Memphis, led by Alessandro Mendini, Andrea Branzi, Michele de Lucchi, and Ettore Sottsass, questioned the functionality of design objects.
