Nowadays stage designs reach proportions that by far exceed the classical definition of a stage as we know it from theatre.

Modern stage environments require increasingly more effort in terms of architecture and technology. For example LED screens of all shapes and sizes are becoming more important than ever, especially in the field of concert or television productions. Those two fields, as well as musical, concert, opera and theatre productions, are documented in this volume photographed by Ralph Larmann. Among the 30 top productions are

  • Disney's Lion King
  • Tosca in the Snow
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium
  • Robbie Williams - Close Encounters
  • Echo 2007
  • Pop Idol 2006 - Finals
  • SkyArena Frankfurt.

All the projects provide a look behind the scenes and detailed insight into the complex stage constructions. Besides this, a short text gives some background information about the place and time of the production, the making of and the responsible creatives as well as involved enterprises and institutions.

We engage with furniture in a very physical way.

We sit on it, lie on it, eat from it and work at it. Furniture has no secret meanings that need explaining in the way fine art might. It is rooted in natural materials and processes, which means you can use your own eyes and trust your own instincts. Appreciation of furniture comes from understanding what has gone before and keeping that line going forward.

The authors, with a passion for furniture, share their knowledge of why it matters from an intellectual and emotional perspective, and how best to assess it from an aesthetic one, exploring styles, techniques and materials.

They introduce twenty golden ages, from the ancient world to 20th-century American Studio Furniture, by way of such rich moments as Ming in China, Italian and French Baroque, Chippendale in England, the designs of Newport and Philadelphia in America, Neoclassicism in France, Russia and Sweden, Biedermeier, Shaker and Art Deco.

In ‘The New Golden Age’, they spotlight the most brilliant contemporary international designers of furniture, both those who see it as akin to art and those who enjoy the craft involved. Finally, they explain how your own star piece can enrich an interior with glamour, drama and personality.

The rich and varied illustrations include details of carving, ornamentation and upholstery, views of different styles of furniture used in historic and contemporary interiors, original drawings, and spectacular pieces, both antique and contemporary.

Advice on commissioning a unique handmade piece, and on buying antique furniture, comes from experts. David Linley, Chairman of Christie’s UK, is also the Chairman of Linley, the bespoke furniture company. Charles Cator, Deputy Chairman of Christie’s International, is in addition a respected furniture historian. Helen Chislett is a writer on interiors and decorative arts.

"We have to replace beauty, which is a cultural concept, with goodness, which is a humanist concept." – Philippe Starck

Philippe Starck wants to bring love and happiness into your life by designing objects, environments, and appliances that will brighten your days. He spent his childhood under his father's drawing boards, sawing, cutting, gluing, and sanding, dismantling bikes, motorcycles and other objects. Several years and several prototypes later, he has changed life at the French presidential palace, the Italians have asked him to renew the notion of furniture, and he has turned the Royalton and Paramount in New York into the first classics of the new hotel world.

Starck's overwhelming international success and cult-star status are proof that people everywhere are receptive to his kindhearted philosophy and distinctive aesthetic sensibility. The democratic design projects that he has undertaken with Target (USA) and j/ii (Japan), as well as the TASCHEN bookshops in Paris and Los Angeles and the Bon restaurant chain, are among the projects included in this volume that traces the entire career of today's foremost design superhero.

The designer:
Philippe Starck is an internationally acclaimed French creator, designer and architect. This untiring and rebellious citizen of the world, who considers it his duty to share his ethical and subversive vision of a fairer planet, creates unconventional objects whose purpose is to be “good” before being beautiful. Most of his designs have become cult objects, and his hotels are timeless icons that have added a new dimension to the global cityscape. An enthusiastic advocate of sustainability, this visionary recently developed the revolutionary concept of “democratic ecology” by creating affordable wind turbines for the home, soon to be followed by innovative wooden prefabricated ecological houses and solar boats. He himself lives, with his wife Jasmine, mostly on airplanes, and in Paris, Burano, and on his oyster farm in the southwest of France.

A love letter to the cinema from the House of Dior, featuring legendary screen actresses in signature Dior.

Embraced by Hollywood and the iconic women who are its stars, the fashions of Christian Dior have been worn by the likes of Marlene Dietrich in Stage Fright, Lauren Bacall in How to Marry a Millionaire, Ava Gardner, Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor and, more recently, Charlize Theron, Penélope Cruz, and Nicole Kidman.

Well before the successes that were to propel Dior to the forefront of the fashion world, the master couturier put his talent to work as a costume designer for the cinema, collaborating with renowned filmmakers and creating timeless ensembles for legendary actresses. Following the untimely death of the designer, the House of Dior’s involvement with the cinema continued, from 1958 to the present, with more than fifty films featuring the stars of the silver screen dressed in signature Dior.

Combining fashion photography and rarely seen and never before published behind-the-scenes photographs, this gorgeously produced volume showcases Dior’s creations for film and the movie stars who brought them to life, and is a must for those who aspire to high style.
