T-shirts that reflect current styles in graphic design, illustration, and fashion.
With their catchy messages and bold artwork, T-shirts are a reflection of and petri dish for current styles in graphic design, illustration, and fashion. Focusing on T-shirts created by the most innovative and style-setting brands, Torso presents t-shirts that can be seen as projection screens for the most original contemporary visual codes. Compiled by Formatmag.com founder and editor-in-chief Daniel Eckler, this book is a definitive guide to today’s T-shirt culture.
Show me your t-shirts and I’ll tell you who you are. Today’s t-shirts are projection screens for styles, thoughts, and attitudes; they are wearable calling cards. Wearers and designers of t-shirts define themselves through the featured visual codes and messages and are constantly trying to outdo each other when it comes to who has the most original ideas.
Torso presents t-shirts whose motifs not only function as a means of personal communication, but also reflect and increasingly influence the complete spectrum of modern graphic design. As the first book to focus on t-shirts created by the most innovative and style-setting brands, it is the definitive guide to t-shirt culture.
Torso was compiled by Daniel Eckler, founder and editor-in-chief of Formatmag.com, one of the world’s most popular and influential publications dedicated to streetwear, street art, and alternative lifestyles.
The history of photography is teeming with portraits of musicians made iconic by their album covers: Thelonious Monk by W. Eugene Smith, Miles Davis by Irving Penn, Grace Jones by Jean-Paul Goude, Laurie Anderson by Robert Mapplethorpe.
The history of album cover art also includes collaborations between prominent figures, such as Mick Rock and David Bowie, Annie Leibovitz and John Lennon, Lee Friedlander and John Coltrane, Nobuyoshi Araki and Björk, Anton Corbijn and U2, and Robert Frank with the Rolling Stones ― not to mention Francis Wolff’s legendary work with Blue Note, the record label he cofounded.
Musicians and designers have also sifted through photography’s rich history for powerful photographs to match and keep company with the music enclosed within: Anders Petersen’s classic Café Lehmitz portrait of a man nestling into a woman’s bosom stands in for Tom Waits on the cover of Swordfishtrombones; Big Star and Alex Chilton push the listener into a corner with William Eggleston’s Red Ceiling on their album Radio City; Rage Against the Machine goes for the jugular on its self-titled album with the anonymous Vietnam War photo of the self-immolation of a Buddhist monk. Images like the Abbey Road crosswalk are deeply inscribed in our collective memory, yet few details are known about the photographer.
All of these ― and more ― are included in this compendium of electrifying images and the albums they grace. Includes albums featuring images by David Bailey, Guy Bourdin, Anton Corbijn, Roy DeCarava, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Nan Goldin, Luigi Ghirri, Jean-Paul Goude, Brian Griffin, William Klein, David LaChapelle, Danny Lyon, Robert Mapplethorpe, Jean-Baptiste Mondino, Ryan McGinley, Helmut Newton, Martin Parr, Anders Petersen, Pierre et Gilles, Hiro, Cindy Sherman, W. Eugene Smith, Pennie Smith, Juergen Teller, Jeff Wall, Andy Warhol, Albert Watson, William Wegman, and more.
In today’s high-tech, virtual world, where things exist—but then again they don’t—people are drawn irresistibly to “touch-friendly” designs. It’s little wonder that graphic design using unusual materials that call out to be touched get noticed and build image like no others.
Design on nontraditional materials attracts both designers and consumers. The subject fascinates consumers because they recognize that unique materials can be difficult to engineer and incorporate, and thus tactile design nearly always becomes coveted and collectible. Moreover, the designer who can get a consumer to interact with a product, whether it’s a brochure or a package, increases the chance of making a memorable connection and, even better yet, a sale.

Toys, fulfilling as they do one of mankind’s most basic needs, have existed for as long as we have. From the earliest times both adults and children have used toys to simulate reality or simply to pass time. Renowned designers, artists and architects have always tried their hand at creating toys: from Frank Lloyd Wright’s work with Fröbel’s building blocks to Josef Hartwig’s Bauhaus chess set that is still produced today. Gerrit Rietveld, Pablo Picasso, Marcel Breuer and Andy Warhol also designed toys. However, most often it was craftsmen and -women – such as the seamstress Margarete Steiff (Steiff teddy bears), the carpenters Christiansen (Lego), or the cabinet-maker Hans Beck (Playmobil) – who designed the most successful and enduring toys.
The title presents 115 products – from toy classics to brand new inventions, all with compelling shapes and functions. Introductory essays to each chapter presenting the history and significance of tricycles, play stores, etc., as well as a designer and retailer index round off the book. This makes it interesting to read for all toy lovers aged 0-99!
Creators of designer toys come from the world of graphic design, illustration or street art, and they use all kind of materials to create these collecting articles. Although the most common raw materials are vinyl and plastic, we can also find pieces made of metal, wood, resin, fabrics, and plush. In the pages of Toyland we will see more than half a million examples of limited editon designer toys, unique custom works of art, moulded, sculpted, sown and hand painted by the best artists of international level.
This book offers a strikingly illustrated look at the world of the designer toy, featuring some of the best designers and artists worldwide. After first appearing in Hong Kong at the end of the 1990s and then spreading rapidly through Japan, then the USA and UK, the 'designer toy movement' is now truly a worldwide phenomenon. "Toyland" is a lavishly illustrated volume that brings together the very latest trends in toy design - including customized one-offs and special limited editions - from some of the world's best known illustrators, designers, and even graffiti artists, such as Gary Baseman, Buff Monster, eBoy, Jon Burgerman, Kennyswork, and many more.

The numerous examples presented in this year’s edition of the Trade Fair Design Annual are once again testament to the ability of designers to consistently tailor trade fair stands to exhibitors’ needs whilst setting standards in the field. Of particular interest is how trade fair stands evolve over the years through long-standing cooperation between designers and clients and how, even in changing economic circumstances, corporate design themes vary without losing brand recognition. The author Conway Lloyd Morgan is Programme Leader in New Media Publishing at the University of Wales, Newport, and the author of numerous books and monographs on design and architecture.

There is a Chinese saying, "Each pattern must have a meaning, and this has to have something to do with luck and harmony." The selected patterns in this book all have deep roots in Chinese folklore and history. To give these special patterns contemporary relevance, the patterns have been adapted, recreated and refined with Adobe Illustrator and kept in a vector format, and can be easily used by designers of any discipline, be it in fashion, textile, graphic or interior design.

The art of faience tile making had found its way from Arabic North Africa from where it had slowly progressed northward via Spain, Italy (mainly the city of Faenza, hence the French “faïence”) and Antwerp to arrive about 1570 in the northern Dutch province of Friesland. The Royal Tichelaar Makkum from which the designs in this book originate is the oldest enterprise in the Netherlands and indeed ranks it among the oldest companies in the world. Many of the designs this factory has been using over the years have been compiled in an ancient volume kept in the historical collection of their archives, along with many examples of actual antique tiles. For the first time a selection of these has now been made available for publication in this book.
