Martin Luther’s Bible, first printed in 1534, was not only a milestone for the printing press, but also a momentous event in world history. A UNESCO world heritage masterpiece, Luther’s translation from Hebrew and ancient Greek into German made the Bible accessible to laypeople and gave printed reference to a whole new branch of Christian faith: Protestantism.

In this meticulous two-volume reprint, TASCHEN presents a complete facsimile of the Luther Bible. Based on a precious copy of the original and printed in colour, it reveals the multilayered splendour of this publication, showcasing the meticulous script, elaborate initials, and exquisite colour woodcuts from the workshop of Lucas Cranach.

In an accompanying booklet, Stephan Füssel, director of the Institute for Book Sciences at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, adds his expertise to the publication with detailed descriptions of the illustrations, as well as an introduction exploring Luther’s life and the seismic significance of his bible.

I replied, ‘Madame, if that`s the way you see it, so be it.`" An engagingly sly comment by the renowned Dutch graphic artist Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898–1972) - the complex ambiguities of whose work leave hasty or single-minded interpretations far behind. Long before the first computer-generated 3-D images were thrilling the public, Escher was a master of the third dimension. His lithograph "Magic Mirror" dates as far back as 1946. In taking that title for this book, mathematician Bruno Ernst is stressing the magic spell Escher`s work invariably casts on those who see it. Ernst visited Escher every week for a year, systematically talking through his entire œuvre with him. Their discussions resulted in a friendship that gave Ernst intimate access to the life and conceptual world of Escher. Ernst`s account was meticulously scrutinized and made accurate by the artist himself.

Escher`s work refuses to be pigeonholed. Scientific, psychological, or aesthetic criteria alone cannot do it justice. The questions remain. Why did he create the pictures? How did he construct them? What preliminary studies were necessary before he could arrive at the final version? And how are the various images Escher created interrelated? This book, complete with biographical data, 250 illustrations, and explications of mathematical problems, offers answers to these and many other questions and is an authentic source text of the first order.

After the 1897 Munich Glass Palace exhibition – when Jugendstil was ‘born’ in Germany – the Stuttgart publisher Julius Hoffmann jr. had the brilliant idea of collating the most interesting illustrations from leading international specialist journals (including Art et Décoration, l’Art décoratif moderne, Revue des Arts Décorativs, La Lorraine artiste, Magazine of Art, Art Journal, The Artist, The Studio, The House, De Woning, Tidskrift for Kunstindustri, Magyar Iparmüvészet) and publishing them in a book entitled ‘Der Moderne Stil’. He also included reproductions of objects exhibited at the Paris Salons, by the La Maison Moderne and Art Nouveau Bing galleries and by artists and makers.

The first magazine of ‘Der Moderne Stil’ [the modern style] was published in 1899; it would be followed until 1905 by 84 issues with several thousand illustrations. Thus an invaluable source of material on Jugendstil objects (with the names of their designers and makers), most of them unknown to this day, was created. We have put all issues into a single book, divided into sections on metal, ceramics, glass, furniture and jewellery.

With approx. 2.000 objects reproduced, this reprint contains a wealth of source material. Authentic, for the most part unknown, illustrations from the heyday of European Jugendstil/Art Nouveau, with all designer and maker names. An indispensable reference work for art historians, dealers, auctioneers and collectors.
