The interpretation and implementation of the basic Islamic rules for women's dress vary from country to country and are subject to cultural and individual styles. Muslimahs in Northern Africa and the Middle East dress quite differently from those in Pakistan and Southeast Asia. This book describes and defines what ‘Japan style’ is. It explores specific achievements in Japanese art and architecture, but also offers an in-depth analysis of the whole of Japanese culture, its vision of the world and of humankind.

The book is divided into three main sections. In the first one (‘Irregular Beauty’), the author delineates the different aspects of Japanese culture and draws interesting connections between art, architecture, religion, philosophy and mythology. For example, he explains the aesthetics of the tea ceremony and its relationship to Zen philosophy as well as other subjects such as the function of the void in mythology, Buddhism and the arts.

The second part of the book (‘A Feeling of Nature’) follows a chronological path from ancient times to the present explaining more specifically how to interpret the different forms of Japanese art (literature, painting, sculpture, etc.).

The third part of the book ('Art Masters') contains short monographs on Japanese masters in the history of Japanese art and culture: Zeami Moto, the creator of "No" theatre; Hokusai, the master of woodblock printing; Yasunai Kawabata and Mishima Yukio, the writers; and the graphic designer, Tanaka Ikko.

Calza’s groundbreaking and insightful text is accompanied by 150 colour images of a great variety of examples from Japanese art and culture.

Originating from Japan's Edo period (1615-1867), tansu refers mostly to wooden cabinets, boxes and chests. Born in Iran to a family with a long history of dealing in Persian carpets, perhaps it was inevitable that Essie Sakhai should become a respected expert on Oriental and Persian carpets, gaining much of his great knowledge from his father Benayahoo Sakhai. Essie lives in North London, though he spends most of his time at ESSIE CARPETS on the corner of Albemarle Street and Piccadilly in London's Mayfair, carrying on the family tradition started in the 18th century.

Essie is a true enthusiast and hopes through his extensive lectures, interviews and writing (his previous books include The Story of Carpets, which has been translated into many languages, and The Buyers' Guide) to share his knowledge and passion for carpets with a wider audience.
