VICE’s irreverence and determination not to kowtow to advertisers has led to an aesthetic that began simply as unique but has grown into a culture that has defined an entire epoch of underground photography. Whether it’s ex-cons showing how to make a shiv-proof vest out of National Geographics or the homeless garbage eaters in Bangladesh posing for a hipster fashion shoot, VICE is never satisfied with simply presenting a well-composed photograph. There’s always a story and that is precisely why VICE photography is as respected as it is imitated.

The book will be divided into five parts. "Vice Photographers" will juxtapose the work of established names (see above) against up-and-comers like Jamie Warren, Jerry Hsu and Patrick O’Dell. After interviews with and portfolios from seven of each group, we’ll turn to "Vice’s Photojournalism" highlights. These images will be culled both from the magazine’s editorial content over the years and from the photo issues VICE has put out annually since April 2001. The third section will be "Vice Fashion," which includes shoots like "Anna Wintour, You’re Wrong" wherein VICE featured overweight women in seductive poses, or the "Sex Issue’s" fashion shoot that had every well-dressed model fornicating with the next. The final two sections are a collage of previously published VICE favorites and new stuff discovered since the last photo issue.

The result is an eye-popping anthology that beautifully illustrates the best of recent alternative photography from around the world.

These moody, monochrome landscapes speak of an Italy far removed from the familiar, tourist images. Mostly ‘empty’ – without people – they highlight the intrinsic beauty of Venice itself, and capture the timelessness of the city throughout the centuries.

Juxtaposing black and white photographs of traditional, theatrical Venice with images of the city’s industrial area, Marghera, this is a hauntingly beautiful and utterly original take on one of the world’s most photographed cities.

The old days of posed wedding pictures are gone and a new exciting field of 'wedding reportage' has emerged. This new style is all about telling the story of the wedding day by getting up close and intimate, without becoming intrusive. The art of capturing a split-second moment in time requires anticipation, an eye for composition and a nose for the story. These are the key strengths for any reportage-style photographer and Wedding Photography Now! clearly explains how a good wedding photographer can become a great one. Many couples want two albums: one for friends and family and another private one for themselves. Wedding Photography Now! takes photographers through all the essential stages for creating very personal photo albums, from private portraits of the couple to risqué shots of the bride getting dressed on the day, and looks at how to liven up traditional portraits by using unusual techniques, angles, lighting, locations and post-processing techniques.

Michelle Turner is a leading documentary wedding photographer based in Maine, USA. Michelle frequently travels internationally to photograph weddings and combines photojournalism with creative portraiture to provide complete coverage of that special day. Her images range from the vibrant and colourful to the grungy and emotional.

The sights and sounds of American jazz. Claxton's photographs of legendary jazz musicians

"Surely the most thorough and imaginative visual record of American jazz at mid-century that we’ll ever see." - Newsweek, New York

In 1960, photographer William Claxton and noted German musicologist Joachim Berendt traveled the United States hot on the trail of jazz music. The result of their collaboration was an amazing collection of photographs and recordings of legendary artists as well as unknown street musicians.

The book Jazzlife, the original fruit of their labors, has become a collector's item that is highly treasured among jazz and photography fans. In 2003, TASCHEN began reassembling this important collection of material — along with many never-before-seen color images from those trips. They are brought together in this updated volume, which includes a foreword by William Claxton tracing his travels with Berendt and his love affair with jazz music in general. Jazz fans will be delighted to be able to take a jazz-trip through time, seeing the music as Claxton and Berendt originally experienced it.

The photographer:

William Claxton (1927-2008) began his career shooting jazz record cover art. His iconic images of Chet Baker, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday and many others reflect his preeminence among photographers of jazz music. Claxton worked for many of the biggest publishers including Life, Paris Match, and Vogue magazines. His work has been shown in galleries around the world, and his photographic prints are now sought after by collectors of fine art photography. He passed away on October 11, 2008 in his hometown Los Angeles.

This album represents some six decades of achievements of Russian photo reporters in the international press photography arena. It contains all the winning photographs in the main categories, as well as photographs awarded honorary diplomas and special prizes by the international jury – a total of over 450 unique works.

What makes this book such an exclusive photographic publication is that it features not only the works of 115 great photographers, but also some truly original and unique texts – memoirs of events and notable national and international figures of the time. These include Dmitri Shostakovich, Leonid Brezhnev, Mikhail Gorbachev, Boris Yeltsin, Maya Plisetskaya, Igor Moiseyev, Svyatoslav Fyodorov, Nikolai Amosov, and many others.

This publication is therefore of immense artistic and historical value, and the first project of its kind to encompass, and give a detailed account of, the participation of all Russian authors, and members of the professional and children’s juries, in the World Press Photo competition. Another unique feature is the large number of works presented in the author’s original version.

This monumental project is the result of a collaboration between Russ Press Photo (curator: Vasily Prudikov) and Schilt Publishing. The original version was published in Russia in 2010, and has been updated for the English edition in 2013.
Russ Press Photo is a non-profit organization, an independent cultural project whose purpose is to shed light on history and create an archive of contemporary photojournalism in Russia, as well as promoting and supporting the Russian school of photojournalism.
