Burning Beauty is a comprehensive summary of photographer David LaChapelle, stretching from the early 1980s to 2012.

With more than 200 colour illustrations and four essays, it reflects LaChapelles entire oeuvre.

LaChapelles imagery has the ability not only to attract our gaze with seductive and remarkable bodies, settings and objects in every conceivable and inconceivable constellation; it also has the capacity to incite reactions that charge our seeing with emotions that engender a relationship between the image and its viewer.

His imagery places the viewer in the midst of the turbulent visual culture of the past quarter-century and invites us to a blend of passion, comedy, exaggeration and critical reflection.

Published to accompany the exhibition Burning Beauty at The Swedish Museum of Photography in Stockholm, this book offers a unique insight in one of the most important contemporary artists in the world.

Ten years after the exhibition The Air Is on Fire, which unveiled David Lynch’s photographic and painting work, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain will publish a book featuring more than a hundred black-and-white and color images of feminine nudes realized by the artist. These erotically-charged photographs are close to abstraction, offering kaleidoscopic visions of the woman. They attest to David Lynch’s fascination with the infinite variety of the human body, while being in line with his cinematographic work.

Decay can possess the drama of a landslide or the intimacy of cracked skin. In Decay, photographers Nathan Troi Anderson and J.K. Putnam share how decay looks to them through their lenses. Shot in color and black & white, with their cameras trained on a wide array of subjects, decay begins to take shape, framed by written insights about how they perceive this natural phenomenon.

In a distinctly MBP twist, Decay also doubles as a pattern book, providing readers with 50 high-resolution, royalty-free patterns of decay that can be used for any number of graphic design applications.

The Many Worlds of Dennis Hopper. A reluctant icon captures a decade of cultural transformation

During the 1960s, Dennis Hopper carried a camera everywhere—on film sets and locations, at parties, in diners, bars and galleries, driving on freeways and walking on political marches. He photographed movie idols, pop stars, writers, artists, girlfriends, and complete strangers. Along the way, he captured some of the most intriguing moments of his generation with a keen and intuitive eye. A reluctant icon at the epicenter of that decade’s cultural upheaval, Hopper documented the likes of Tina Turner in the studio, Andy Warhol at his first West Coast show, Paul Newman on set, and Martin Luther King during the Civil Rights March from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.

From a selection of photographs compiled by Hopper and gallerist Tony Shafrazi, this extensive volume, finally back in print in a new edition, distils the essence of Hopper’s prodigious photographic career. Also included are introductory essays by Shafrazi and legendary West Coast art pioneer Walter Hopps, as well as an extensive biography and new afterword by journalist Jessica Hundley. With excerpts from Victor Bockris’s interviews of Hopper’s famous subjects, friends, and family, this volume revives an unprecedented exploration of the life and mind of one of America’s most fascinating personalities.

The photographer

Dennis Hopper (1936–2010) was an acclaimed artist, actor, screenwriter, and director who first impressed audiences with his performances in Rebel Without A Cause (1955) and Giant (1956). He changed the face of American cinema with Easy Rider (1969), which he co-wrote, directed, and starred in. Hopper went on to act in hundreds of memorable films and television shows, including Apocalypse Now (1979), Blue Velvet (1986), Hoosiers (1986), True Romance (1993), Basquiat (1997), Elegy (2008), and the TV series Crash (2008). Hopper began painting as a child and started taking photos in 1961 after his then-wife Brooke Hayward gave him a 35 mm Nikon camera for his birthday. His paintings and photography have been exhibited all over the world, including the recent retrospective, “Dennis Hopper and the New Hollywood” in Paris. Dennis Hopper passed away May 29, 2010, in Venice, CA.

In many ways, this work is photography as film, a poignant narrative expressed through a series of stark images - early shots of Tijuana bullfights, LA happenings and urban street scenes show an experimental freedom that would translate into the vivid cinematic imagery of Easy Rider and beyond.

From a selection of photographs compiled by Hopper and gallerist Tony Shafrazi - more than a third of them previously unpublished - this extensive volume distills the essence of Hopper's brilliantly prodigious photographic career. This exciting collection of four hundred vintage prints from the 1960s — taken by Dennis Hopper and recently rediscovered — brilliantly documents the social, political, and creative highlights from a tumultuous era.

Lying hidden away in Dennis Hopper’s home until their discovery months after the artist’s death in 2010, this collection of spectacular photographs, exhibited only once in 1969–70 at the Fort Worth Art Center Museum, is a testament to Hopper’s prolific and enormous talent behind the camera. These photographs are spontaneous, intimate, poetic, observant, and decidedly political. While some are portraits of figures within Hopper’s circle of actor, artist, musician, and poet friends — including Jane Fonda, Paul Newman, and Robert Rauschenberg — they also include images from his extensive travels in Los Angeles, New York, London, Mexico, and Peru.

Hopper’s abiding support of the Civil Rights movement and social justice is evident in his shots from the march on Selma and Harlem street scenes. In images of beauty and stillness he transfers Abstract Expressionism into the artistic language of photography.

Throughout this stunning volume Hopper’s sensitive, keenly observant eye shines through, making it clear that he was a deeply committed chronicler of the events that were unfolding around him.

Departures and Arrivals compiles world-renowned photographer Charles Harbutt’s favorite photographs.

Harbutt (born 1935) has been a prominent member of the American postwar photojournalist tradition ever since his documentation of the Cuban revolution in 1959. He subsequently joined Magnum Photos and was twice elected its president.

Harbutt’s pictures have been exhibited and collected by The Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum in New York, the Art Institute in Chicago and the Corcoran in Washington. In 1997, his negatives, master prints and archives were acquired for the collection of the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson.

Departures and Arrivals is his third book. The black-and-white photographs gathered here highlight ordinary moments in extraordinary historical circumstances, as well as less fraught images of city living.

As Harbutt writes in his introduction to the volume: “There are pictures of men and boys, women and girls, statues, pensive monkeys, moments that took my breath away, angered me, made me smile. That broke my heart”. He adds: “History belongs to all of us, not just kings and generals”.

Departures and Arrivals records Harbutt’s half-century career at the forefront of American photography.

Her disturbing pictures of emotionally and physically deformed people, freaks, and outsiders of human society opened the eye to a reality long denied and made Diane Arbus a classic of American photography.

Her monograph with 81 selected plates and original texts, posthumously published in 1972, has become a classic in itself.

When Diane Arbus died in 1971 at the age of 48, she was already a significant influence — even a legend — among serious photographers, although only a small number of her pictures were widely known.

The publication of Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph in 1972, and the posthumous retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, offered the public its first encounter with Arbus’s achievements. The response was unprecedented.

The monograph of eighty photographs was edited and designed by the painter Marvin Israel, Diane Arbus’s friend and colleague, and by her daughter Doon Arbus. Their goal was to remain faithful to the standards by which Arbus judged her own work, and to how she hoped it would be seen. Universally acknowledged as a timeless masterpiece, and translated into five languages, Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph remains the foundation of her international reputation.

Nearly fifty years has not diminished the impact of these pictures; they penetrate the psyche with the force of a personal encounter, and transform the way we see the world.

This is the first edition in which the image separations were created digitally; the files have been specially prepared by Robert J. Hennessey using prints by Neil Selkirk.

Diane Arbus (1923–1971) revolutionized the terms of the art she practiced. Five volumes of her work have been published posthumously and have remained continuously in print: Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph (1972), Diane Arbus: Magazine Work (1984), Untitled: Diane Arbus (1995), Diane Arbus: A Chronology (2011), and Diane Arbus Revelations (Random House, 2003).

Uwe Ommer

Shoot yourself: Sexy self-portraits by everyday women

Inspired by a babysitter he surprised in front of the bathroom mirror shooting pictures of herself with his Polaroid, photographer Uwe Ommer decided to put together a book of erotic self-portraits by inexperienced photographers. Arming participants with cameras and basic technical instructions, Ommer asked them to photograph themselves in any way they pleased - liberated, so to speak, from the voyeuristic eye of the photographer. Some chose to use mirrors as they captured their portraits, while others braved the camera without the help of their reflections. While many subjects required no intervention by Ommer, for others he acted as “ghost photographer,” helping them with the lighting and setup; in both cases, the models were free to indulge their inspirations in any ways they pleased - from sexy and provocative to romantic to simply being themselves. The cast of self-portraitists includes a wide range of personalities, from students to artists, actors, stylists, dancers, models, musicians, teachers, and more. This highly original book gives us a rare glimpse at the way everyday women see themselves - or wish they did.
