These substantial volumes on art periods vividly portray the most important achievements from the areas of European architecture, sculpture, and painting. The impressive photographs of works from all visual arts movements are at the center of these richly illustrated volumes. The books successfully provide an overview of the artistic diversity of the individual periods, and they couldn't have been written and illustrated any more clearly. The informative and interesting texts have been written by renowned authors from the fields of history, architecture and art history, providing a multifaceted view of each period. These books are a real pleasure for anyone with an interest in art.

Neoclassicism, as a return to the forms and ideals of ancient art, and Romanticism, as an intellectual attitude, are no longer seen as mutually exclusive alternatives. Looking specifically to Europe, the United States and Russia, the authors of this carefully researched book have selected the notion of subjectivism as the common denominator that links the visual arts and architecture between the periods of rococo and realism. A conscious decision was made to extend the time period under consideration to 1848 in order to be able to present painters as widely varied as Johann Heinrich Fussli, John Constable, William Turner, William Blake, Casper David Friedrich, Philipp Otto Runge and Francisco de Goya within this sumptuously illustrated book.

Illustrated with some 900 color photographs and reproductions, this volume explores the complexities of Neoclassicism and Romanticism in architecture and art through in-depth articles by eleven scholars, and reveals how these seemingly antithetical styles are in fact closely related. The book looks at Europe from the renewed interest in the art and architecture of classical antiquity in the mid-18th century (following the excavations of Herculaneum and Pompeii and the arrival of new architectural theories) through the effusions of the mid-19th century, and presents the work of such artists as Johann Heinrich Füssli, Eugène Delacroix, J.M.W. Turner, William Blake, and Francisco de Goya.

When Crown Prince Gustaf returned from Versailles in 1771 to ascend the throne of Sweden, he was determined to give his country a leading place in Europe culturally as well as politically. He fostered the international movement of Neoclassicism, which in Sweden took on a freshness distinctive to the country, alongside the influences of France, England and Germany.

Neoclassicism in the North presents twenty houses and apartments in marvellously evocative, specially commissioned photographs, alongside plans and original drawings. From royal salons with exquisite Pompeian ornament to modest spatter-painted Biedermeier halls, the beautiful Neoclassical houses of Sweden are of unique value today not only because of their superb craftsmanship but also as a stimulus to contemporary decorators.

Born and raised in Vienna, Richard Neutra (1872-1970) came to America early in his career, settling in California. His influence on post-war architecture is undisputed, the sunny climate and rich landscape being particularly suited to his cool, sleek modern style. Neutra had a keen appreciation for the relationship between people and nature; his trademark plate glass walls, and ceilings which turn into deep overhangs, have the effect of connecting indoor and outdoor space. Neutra's ability to incorporate technology, aesthetics, science, and nature into his designs won him recognition as one of Modernist architecture's greatest talents.

In the architecture of Richard Neutra (1892-1970), inside and outside find their perfect modernist harmony.

As the Californian sun glints off sleek building surfaces, vast glass panel walls allow panoramic views over mountains, gardens, palm trees, and pools. Neutra moved to the United States from his native Vienna in 1923 and settled in Los Angeles. He displayed his affinity with architectural settings early on with the Lovell House, set on a landscaped hill with views of the Pacific Ocean and Santa Monica Mountains. Later projects such as the Kaufmann House and Nesbitt House would continue this blend of art, landscape, and living comfort, with Neutra's clients often receiving detailed questionnaires to define their precise needs.

This richly illustrated architect introduction presents the defining projects of Neutra's career. As crisp structures nestle amid natural wonders, we celebrate a particularly holistic brand of modernism which incorporated the ragged lines and changing colours of nature as much as the pared-down geometries of the International Style.

All of Richard Neutra's works gathered together in one volume

Originally from Vienna, Richard Neutra came to America early in his career, settling in California. His influence on post-war architecture is undisputed, the sunny climate and rich landscape being particularly suited to his cool, sleek modern style.

Neutra had a keen appreciation for the relationship between people and nature; his trademark plate glass walls and ceilings which turn into deep overhangs have the effect of connecting the indoors with the outdoors. Neutra's ability to incorporate technology, aesthetic, science, and nature into his designs brought him to the forefront of Modernist architecture.

For the first time, all of Neutra's works (nearly 300 private homes, schools, and public buildings) are gathered together in one volume, illustrated by over 1000 photographs, including those of Julius Shulman and other prominent photographers.

There comes a time for most young urban dwellers when they tire of futons on the floor and brick-and-board bookshelves. That's when they discover that decorating an apartment comes with a unique set of problems. Most people don't want to spend a lot of money renovating a place they may live in for just a year or two, and landlords can be picky about renovations such as enlarging rooms by knocking down walls. The New Apartment Book illustrates how to create a stylish home in limited space on a middle-class budget, whether your preferred look is upscale-funky or clean and spare. Though many of the examples feature light, roomy, well-proportioned apartments, many are also designed around elements that one might consider a problem: a tiny kitchen, a bathroom with no storage, an odd brick wall, or a single living/sleeping area. Treat these as interesting design features and use the space creatively, as this book does, and bingo! No more problem. The "smart tips" scattered throughout are easy and fast. Although there are a few rather dull step-by-step projects for lampshades and the like at the end of the book, The New Apartment Book really shines as an inspiring guide to the possibilities of an average apartment or condominium.
