In our modern, high-tech society, traditional craftsmanship has increasingly had to give way to mass production. Synthetic materials have taken over from natural ones, and the world of construction in 2008 appears to revolve around efficiency, standardisation and cost optimisation.

However, a growing number of individuals are reacting against these tendencies by working to create authentic and personal living environments.

This new home-design philosophy has had an impact in many areas: a lot of distinctive old residences, farms, country houses and other homes are undergoing careful restoration; industrially manufactured furniture is being replaced by unique, handmade pieces; and preference is given to natural materials and finishes, rather than mass production.

Within this context, it is easy to see why valuable construction materials and pieces from the past are being reclaimed, restored and reintegrated into properties: these “architectural antiques” ensure that every home can have a unique cachet.

Whether it’s an 18th-century wooden floor, reclaimed Burgundy slabs, authentic handmade roof tiles and slates, antique fireplaces, or other historic features, these construction materials always offer the opportunity for every home project to have an authentic character, as is clearly illustrated by the many inspiring projects featured in this book.

Dealers in antique construction materials also occupy a very important place in these developments, convincingly demonstrating how their unique discoveries, often to be found in a variety of warehouses and showrooms, can be integrated into magnificent homes. The growing professionalism within this sector has in recent years ensured that an increasing number of architects, interior specialists and private individuals have been able to find materials that suit them perfectly within the ever-expanding assortment of architectural antiques.

  • Balcony design from 22 European cities
  • With an introducing foreword: balconies – urban views
  • Exact locations of the buildings shows
Balconies are an architectural accent of a special kind. Forced to looking up from below while passing by on the street the balcony serves as an eye-catcher. However, regarded down from the perspective of the balcony it is providing a refuge. It shields off the chaos of city life, but also offers an urban panorama from within. Thus, balconies are an elegant or elementary, representative or simple coming together of urbaneness and closeness to nature.

Captivating detailed photographs portray a wide spectrum of forms and styles on a journey through Europe’s most fascinating cities. The copiously illustrated book documents the entire scope of balcony construction from ancient to brand new, from frugal to pompously ornate, from functional to playful. The volume is part of a series, which is focused not on prominent buildings at large but on ingenious and extraordinary details.

Doors are prominent and essential elements of all buildings. They pave the way into and out of a building. Thus, doors are simultaneously an article of daily use and an explicit statement of the homeowner. They can serve as an invitation just as well as a barrier. Due to the variety of potential uses and statements the door is an integral, yet very intricate architectural component.

Through the eye of excellent photographers with exceptional attention to detail, this volume attempts to capture the magnificent diversity of doors from all architectural epochs and styles found in Europe’s greatest cities. It documents the entire scope of entrance design from ancient to brand new, from frugal to pompously ornate, from functional to playful.

The volume is part of a series, which is focused not on prominent buildings at large but on ingenious and extraordinary details.

Just as its name implies, innovation means unsatisfactory to the current situation and process of developing new methods and techniques. It could be applied to tool and technology, procedure, and work pattern etc.

Innovation in architecture refers much to the changes in the façade of the architecture, the transformation of the interior structure, the development and application of the low-carbon materials, the improvement of the façade techniques and the load-bearing techniques, the regulating of the architectural functions, and the combination of architecture and environment.

This book compiles more than one hundred projects (mainly foreign projects) and categorizes these projects into categories of morphology innovation, structural innovation, material innovation, technology innovation, and function innovation according to the innovation concept in architecture. The innovation of these projects independently uses models of a certain kind of innovation or combines some classical models of several innovation patterns at the same time. We hope that the advancing innovation concepts in foreign architectures could bring more idea collision to the insiders of the architectural industry and help them create more new and better architectures for the world’s development.

Architectural Lighting, the latest addition to the Architecture Briefs series, provides both a critical approach to and a conceptual framework for understanding the application of lighting in the built environment. The key considerations of lighting design are illuminated through accessible texts and instructional diagrams. Six built projects provide readers with concrete examples of the ways in which these principles are applied. Short essays by architect Steven Holl, artist Sylvain Dubuisson, and landscape architect James Corner explore the role of lighting in defining spatial compositions.
