Daniel H. Burnham discovers the foundations of twentieth-century American architecture in the life and work of a man who dominated his era like few others: as an architect, city planner, businessman, philanthropist, and civic leader.

Despite his importance to twentieth-century architecture, there are no monographs in print that cover such a full range of this extraordinary figure's work. Burnham helped create the Chicago school of architecture and built over 200 buildings in the city. With the famous Reliance Building, he heralded the glass skyscrapers of the twentieth century. His firm was one of the largest architectural firms in the world. D. H. Burnham and Company created such monumental buildings in Chicago as the famous Monadnock, Rand-McNally, and Rookery buildings, the Marshall Field Store, and the Art Institute of Chicago, as well as the Flatiron building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C., all of which are fully illustrated here and newly analyzed.

Aside from his work as an architect, Burnham was one of the founders of the City Beautiful movement, which grew out of an urgent turn-of-the-century need for chaotically growing American cities to develop on a more rational, planned scale. The City Beautiful movement ideas included beautifully designed Beaux-Arts buildings, increased park areas, better living conditions, and improved transportation. Included here is material on the World's Colombian Exposition of 1893, often considered the start of the movement; the 1901 Plan for Washington, D.C., developed in conjunction with Frederick Law Olmsted and Charles McKim of McKim Mead & White; and the Chicago Plan of 1909, which was so successful that after its publication he received requests to design twenty other American cities.

This deluxe book fully explores all aspects of his work, the legacy of which lives on in the form of outstanding buildings, city plans, and cultural institutions, all still very much in use today.

This is a study of Daniel Libeskind's ideas and work. It discusses his design and his initial concepts and why he believes 'architecture is a cultural science based on living, history and tradition, not a technology or a theory'.

Particular attention is paid to the significance of the iconic Jewish Museum in Berlin and through it, a wider examination of his architectural philosophy is discussed, including its source and its evolution. The narrative also explores the way in which his architecture reflects a history and a continuing 'story'.

This book offers a rare insight into the mind and the architecture of an exceptional architect.

As the late twentieth-century fascination with rounded shapes, organic influences, and plastics fades, interior designers are increasingly drawn to deep colours, polished woods, velvets, furs, leather, dark metals, and brick – materials used liberally in the past – that have a nostalgic quality.

Efforts to shape a less austere present by creating an idealized version of the past have begun to appear in commercial and residential design throughout the country and abroad.

Dark Nostalgia presents over twenty-five projects that exemplify the smooth incorporation of evocative historic detail into current interiors.

Public spaces, including New York’s famous Royalton Hotel lobby renovation, Shoreditch House in London, and Alain Ducasse’s newest restaurant, Adour, as well as private residences and smaller, intimate restaurants and clubs by cutting-edge designers, including AvroKO, David Rockwell, Roman & Williams, Julian Schnabel, Philippe Starck and Adam Tihany, demonstrate the many successful ways this trend towards a dark nostalgia has been incorporated in recent designs.

The late David Hicks is one of the great designers of the twentieth century. He is primarily known for his interior design, but he was also involved with carpets, jewellery, fabrics, furniture, wall paper, sheets and, last but not least, gardens. His approach was dictatorial and uncompromising and he did not mince his words. What he seeks to impart in this book is 'style' and it is very much a style of his own.

His clear-cut attitudes are revealed in these writings on garden design and on the gardens and styles which he admires. 'What I have sought to achieve, all through my working life,' he writes 'is a liaison between the past and the present day whilst maintaining a practical but somewhat experimental attitude to outdated tradition. I have attempted to introduce a lot of today and some of tomorrow whilst always keeping appropriateness and the client's requirements foremost in my mind. This applies to my interior designing, product designing, writing, jewellery and garden designing. In every one of those visually dominated activities quality, form and innovation are always of vital importance to produce style.'

My Kind of Garden is superbly illustrated with photographs, by Dana Hyde, of gardens David Hicks designed, and gardens from all around the world which particularly appealed to his very personal sense of good taste.

Whether you are designing a brand new home or simply updating one room’s interior, Decorate is teeming with clever, creative and quirky advice from the world’s best designers and architects.

The likes of Jonathan Adler, Kelly Hoppen, Amy Neunsinger, Rita Konig, Amy Butler and Abigail Ahern reveal essential tools of the trade, from where to put your furniture to how to dress a room with your own individual style. The book is a gorgeous source of essential expert guidance, featuring both quick fixes for small budgets and indulgent ideas for more ambitious projects.

The text is divided into sections, each punctuated with top tips, pearls of decorating wisdom and divine designer secrets:

‘Space Matters’ has a blank-canvas approach, showing you how best to assess a space and work out its specific decorating needs. A section on ‘Setting Your Style’ profiles a huge range of different interior aesthetics, from Natural and Fleamarket Style to Modern Glamour and Eclectic. ‘Room By Room’ concentrates on each room of the house and tells you what you need to know to transform any area. Finally, ‘Attention to Detail’ reveals the smaller elements that can utterly transform a space, without affecting the architecture or structure of a building. These final touches include hanging pictures, arranging flowers, cushions and lights.

Whatever kind of home you live in - from a high-rise condo on Miami Beach to a glass-enclosed "cabin" in the Pacific Northwest to a New York City townhouse or a ranch house in Dallas - Decorate has something to offer. With its focus on current trends, this book offers advice and insight from some of the top designers working today.

The 33 projects that are collected in this book are artfully photographed and informatively explained. It will give you so many ideas about transforming the home you own into your dream house, that you'll want to start repainting your living room as soon as you spot your favorite room in the book. Decorate concentrates on design and decoration, rather than new construction or structural renovation, hoping that the lessons of each location included will be realistic goals for many homeowners.

Many of the houses, apartments, condominiums, and townhouses that appear in the book are the homes of the professionals who designed them. Others were created for clients. Some of the decorators are at the top of their profession. All of the locations demonstrate important aspects of what is happening in design today.

If the pictures are meant to inspire, however, the text is designed to show you how - or at least give you some insight into what kinds of questions to ask when the time comes to create your own before and after photos. Straight-shooting advice from the pros help you avoid costly errors, a "Key to the Style" box explains the designer's approach and concepts, and "What the Pros Know" sidebars help you gain insight into the ways in which the theoretical becomes possible no matter what kind of home you have.

In decoration, a carpet’s influence is never outsized. In fact, more than any other element of a room, and as the largest and most expensive component of any design scheme, the effect a carpet has on a space is every bit as great as its size. Decorators have long recognized the importance of a fine carpet, its impact on the colours and textures of a space, its contribution to creating an atmosphere, its feel of luxury, and, with the best examples, its lasting value.

Despite their essential role as the bedrock of any design scheme, beautiful carpets have lived in the shadows of recognition. Decorating with Carpets: A Fine Foundation aims to change that oversight, tapping the extensive and remarkable archive of Stark Carpet for interior design’s greatest examples.

Over the course of its 75 years, Stark Carpet, the premier purveyor of carpets to the trade in the country, has worked with the each era’s most notable designers, from Billy Baldwin and Dorothy Draper to Sister Parish and Albert Hadley to Mark Hampton and Mario Buatta to contemporary leading lights such as Diamond Baratta, Victoria Hagan, Katie Ridder, and Stephen Gambrel. These designers offer imaginative solutions to practical problems ranging from the selection of appropriate carpeting for high-traffic areas, such as stairs and corridors, to using faux wild cat and fawn motifs to unify colour and design, and countless other challenges.

Carpets produced by Stark demonstrate decorating trends at their highest level. Decorating with Carpets: A Fine Foundation delves into types of carpets (Oriental, Aubusson, Savonnerie, Dhurrie, French velour, Moroccan, French Petit and Gros Point, Portuguese and Greek needlework, Axminster, Wilton, flatweave, hand-carved) and explores patterns (geometrics, florals, plaids, animal prints) and textures, illustrating all through the work of the most talented American designers. Decorating with Carpets: A Fine Foundation promises be the definitive book on carpet, a handsome, richly illustrated volume that, like its subject, captures great beauty and has timeless value.
