This book takes you to the most beautiful locations in the world where the dream became true: full-page colour photos show places such as Øresund, the beaches of Mykonos, the dunes of the Hamptons and the coast of Brazil. Villas designed by famous architects like Poul & Hanne Kjærholm are presented, but also low-budget paradises built by the owners themselves, including a kind of Robinson Crusoe hut hidden in the tropical jungle on the coast of Costa Rica.

Selection of 29 architectural projects that contain an auditorium.that have been finished from the year 2000 until the present, that is to say, within the first decade of the XXI century and located in Europe, (Spain, France, Luxembourg, England,...), and also North America, South America, Asia and Australia. The buildings are introduced with a brief general description, with high quality floor plans and photographs, concentrating on providing details about the auditoriums, their interiors and furnishings. The book starts off with a brief illustrated overview on the evolution of theatres and auditoriums throughout the history of architecture, from ancient times to the present day. Kim Young-Sub + Kunchook-Moonhwa Architect Associates has been involved in the construction of some of the most significant religious centres in Korea. The firm's work is deeply rooted in a fundamental spirituality, which is also found in Korean culture. Traditional Korean design is about subtle curves rather than straight lines, roofs that reach to the sky rather than remaining flat, and finishes of thick curved pine. These influences are clear in Kim Young-Sub's buildings as is his remarkable attitude towards space, from which he creates churches with large areas, voids, which are about symbolism and landscape. In addition to his religious buildings, a selection of Kim Young-Sub's residential, educational, welfare and commercial buildings is also featured in this superbly illustrated publication.

Explaining in detail the definition and design process for a real self-sufficient architecture in energy, water and food at the lowest possible price, this book aims to promote the establishment of a new model of architecture, called “integrated architectural model.” which is to substantially improve the design of buildings, educate society and to integrate in the architecture the least amount of technological additives. Similarly, buildings can generate the basic food and water capable of ensuring the survival of its occupants. To illustrate this comprehensive architectural model, we analyze five innovative and visionary projects by Luis De Garrido.

The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia and the technology company HP have developed an international contest with the idea of “self-sufficient city". It is an invitation to reflect on how we will live in the near future in the light of the social, cultural and technological changes in which we are immersed. This publication presents the projects of the 107 finalists between 708 participant proposals. From connected metropolises, eco neighbourhoods, self-sufficient buildings, intelligent homes or any other proposal for a short-, medium or long-term project such as the winning ones: “HURBS” proposed by Sergio Castillo Tello and María Hernández Enríquez from Spain and “WATER FUEL” by Rychiee Espinosa and Seth Mcdowell from the United States.

Created for students and professionals to inspire changes in how new buildings are designed and constructed, the Self-Sufficient competition challenged participants to design a self-sufficient and ecologically oriented dwelling. In the early 20th century, the concept of “dwelling” was defined as a “machine for living”, a reference to a new way of understanding the construction of inhabitable spaces that characterized the Machine Age. Today, a century later, we face the challenge of constructing a sustainable or self-sufficient dwelling, a living organism that interacts with its environment, exchanging resources, and which functions as an entirely independent entity. The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) has collected a selection of entries presented during its 1st Advanced Architecture Contest: Self-Sufficient Housing.

Images of the Mediatheque have widely circulated in architectural media since 1995, when Toyo Ito's competition project revealed a new structural prototype (or archi-type) that expressed the will to incorporate the notions of mobility and fluidity into space and structure. Second in the series of Verb monographs, this book presents the process of design and construction of Ito's prototype during the six years between the building's initial design through to its completion in 2001. The Mediatheque aspires to integrate real and virtual worlds - or, in Ito's words, “the primitive body of natural flow and the virtual body of electronic flow”. Long after its completion, the Mediatheque is still evolving. An evolutionary building that combines the virtual and real into one design objective. Photos, drawings, and text.

Hand-drawn perspectives and atmospheric images envisioning the ideas behind architectural projects represent a rare medium in the field of modern construction. Sergei Tchoban: Art presents a selection of over 200 drawings by Sergei Tchoban, Architekt BDA, that accompany and permeate his unique process of architectural design.

In his work, utilising a range of media including pencil, charcoal, watercolour and pastel, Tchoban references neoclassicism and constructivism, illuminating the idea of the ‘Grand Tour of Europe’ and recalling expressively the visions of Piranesi and Escher.

The fantastical architectural visions Tchoban has captured on paper are not intended to be constructed physically, and reveal a surprising, introverted trait. As a leitmotif of his entire work he repeatedly incorporates the element of water, examining the phenomenon of ebb and flood, and the mystification of dream worlds. Strong spirits and intense emotions sculpt his images. Occasionally the coolness of Modernism and sobriety of the engineer’s construction dominate; at other times deep melancholy or romantic scenographies emerge, recalling images of classical stage designs or satirising the grand concetto.
