Nestled by rows of luscious grapevines, wineries evoke images of fine living few other places can rival. The spirit of each winery is as distinctive as the wines it produces. With a multitude of unique design touches, each one creates a sense of place, and a charming invitation to slow down and savor a way of life deeply rooted in growing cycles and the seasons. This lavishly illustrated compendium showcases the new wave of winery buildings. This school of design takes its lead from architect Herzog de Meuron’s 1997 design for Dominus Winery, setting a trend away from the rustic and embracing the sleekest contemporary ethos. Since then leading wineries have commissioned chic tasting rooms and spectacular facilities by architectural luminaries such as Santiago Calatrava, Rafael Moneo, Zaha Hadid, Frank O. Gehry and Norman Foster.

Christian Datz and Christof Kullmann are architects who write for leading German publications such as Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and deutsche bauzeitung.

You are your stuff! This book is about embracing everything you own and showing it off on your walls. Whatever your taste, it's about celebrating the beautiful, the eccentric, the simple. In a world where trends and styles are dictated to us, Sarah Bagner, better known as Supermarket Sarah, encourages readers to believe in their own styles and ideas. Here Sarah travels the globe, visiting cosmopolitan locations in Tokyo, London and Stockholm, offering up inspiration and variety as she illustrates novel ways in which people use their own walls to display themselves and their "treasures." She visits the homes and studios of designers and collectors, viewing the displays of minimalists and hoarders. The walls range from the quirky to the romantic, from vintage to brand new. Whatever is displayed, and however it is displayed, everything has a meaning for its owner. From collections of supermarket receipts, records and toys, to chandeliers and antlers, whatever it may be, Sarah loves a story. Items only have the value that you put on them and Wonder Walls explores the ideas and thoughts behind people's objects and why these objects, when adorning a wall, help us discover ourselves. The walls featured here are all revealing, amusing and thought-provoking, and will inspire you to look at your own collections with a fresh eye.

Cities like Hong Kong do not just appear out of nowhere. Behind and beyond the skyline and the tourist attractions, people from all parts of China and the world have worked together to overcome daunting internal obstacles and external forces. In architecture, Wong & Ouyang has been an important contributor to that immense effort. The publication of this book, Wong & Ouyang – Blueprints for Hong Kong on the occasion of its 50th anniversary, is a fitting tribute to the accomplishments of the firm.

In the last half century, buildings have become increasingly complex. The range of projects illustrated in this book – from master plans to building complexes to individual buildings – shows the scope of Wong & Ouyang’s capabilities. Looking at the procession of projects and how they have changed over the years, it becomes apparent that the long-term stability and continuity of the firm and its ability to draw on expertise from around the world has created a strong core competence and ‘institutional memory’. That has been a key factor in its ability to learn and improve with each succeeding task. The variety and size of the projects parallel the change and growth of Hong Kong to its present status as one of the most advanced cities in the world.

Timber is having a renaissance as an architectural material, as more architects come to understand its properties and enjoy adding it to their repertoire of materials. With a growing crop of good new timber buildings, architects are coming to realize that this is no longer the sole preserve of the traditionalist, but a material that has an important role to play in the contemporary world. The book's introduction examines the ways in which a raw material of diminishing quality (but abundant quantity) can be stretched to perform as it has never done before using new technology and careful detailing.

The 40 case studies are devoted to some of the most interesting new wood projects worldwide. The projects are grouped into seven themed chapters.

Featured architects include Steven Holl, Foster and Partners, Rural Studio, Renzo Piano and Shigeru Ban.

Nature's greatest resource. Modern wood architecture from Tierra del Fuego to North Cape

Wood is renewable and sustainable, solid and attractive. Wood can be bent and shaped to the most modern of designs. It is the material of the moment for contemporary architecture and this new volume allows readers to get a glimpse of the most exciting and dynamic new uses of wood in architecture from all over the world. Like earthen architecture, the use of wood is almost as ancient as building itself. The columns of Greek temples are stylized trees. Today’s wooden buildings do all kinds of surprising things, and most of all, they are as “green” as they come.

Featured architects and practices include:70F, A1Architects, AldingerArchitekten, Atelier Masuda, Auer+Weber+Assoziierte, Pieta-Linda Auttila, Shigeru Ban, Beals-Lyon Arquitectos / Christian Beals, Bernardes + Jacobsen, BETON, Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, Enrique Browne, Bernard Bühler, Marco Casagrande, José Cruz Ovalle, dECOi Architects, dmvA, dRN Architects, Dumay + Fones + Vergara, Piet Hein Eek, ETH-Studio Monte Rosa / Bearth & Deplazes, Edouard François, General Design, Seppo Häkli, Yosuke Inoue, IROJE KHM Architects, Jackson Clements Burrows, Emma Johansson and Timo Leiviskä, Kauffmann Theilig & Partner, Mathias Klotz, Marcio Kogan, Kirsi Korhonen and Mika Penttinen, Nic Lehoux and Jacqueline Darjes, Niall McLaughlin Architects, Andreas Meck, Beatriz Meyer, Ken Sungjin Min, Murman Arkitekter, Rolf Carl Nimmrichter, Valerio Olgiati, Onix, PUSHAK, Room 11, Hans-Jörg Ruch, SARC Architects, Rodrigo Sheward, Simas and Grinspum, Studio Weave, Tezuka Architects, Turnbull Griffin Haesloop, Wingårdhs

Living material. You’ll be amazed what wood can do

As soon as the first men bravely moved out of their protective caves, they surely built protective structures out of wood. The ultimate renewable resource for architecture is thus the oldest, but also the most modern of materials. Thanks to computer-driven design and manufacturing techniques, wood can be cut and carved in the most astonishing new ways. Such innovative contributors to the work published in this volume as the German professor Achim Menges are showing the way to the creation of complex, almost living wood structures. Others like the young architects from WMR who are based in Santiago, Chile, show just how it is possible to build a dramatic two-story wood cabin overlooking the Pacific for just $ 30,000. Or imagine how an innovative polyurethane-coated wood canopy can cover and renew a whole area of the historic city of Seville (Metropol Parasol by Jürgen Mayer H.).

Just as it can be simple and evocative, wood can be part of sophisticated structures like Snohetta’s Norwegian Wild Reindeer Pavilion, with its CNC-milled timber wall. Economical, ecological, and fundamentally warm, wood architecture is as contemporary as it gets.

In modern architecture, wood plays an especially central role, and the significance of this wonderfully diverse raw material in the design of sophisticated buildings and interiors continues to increase. New materials and innovative processing techniques enable the production of absolutely precise wood building materials that possess considerably improved technical and optical charasteristics. Consequently, the expanded application spectrum allows the manufacture of extremely intricate construction as well as solid components in uprecedented dimensions. Its employment in interior decorating is just as feasible as its function as a weatherproofing facade skin. Its appearance can be rough and raw, but also sophisticated and clean. It allows a sensual perception that turns almost all nuances, from harsh, almost cool, to warm and cozy, into perceptible experience. This bookpresents remarkable objects from the realm of private living space, public buildings and religious structures. Along with well-designed hotels, restaurants and bars, they form the latest currents of a modern international wood-building culture.
