Following Phaidon’s Modern House (published 1993), Modern House 2 is a survey of the world’s most innovative contemporary houses. Organized thematically, it examines over thirty houses considering contemporary issues, such as ecological concerns, changing patterns of living, building with sensitivity in increasingly populated cities, and respecting the environment when building in isolated rural areas. It also discusses concept houses for the future, focusing on international competition designs or commissions for ‘model houses’ and offers an insight into future possibilities for domestic architecture. Modern House 3 is an overview of the most innovative houses built around the world in recent years, following the highly successful publication of Phaidon’s Modern House (1993) and Modern House 2 (2000). Saying that an architectural form is naked is a typical affirmation of everyday language that synthesises multiple characters and meanings through a metaphor. Anti-decorative architecture of modern tradition is naked, buildings under construction or ruined are naked, as are in general those whose bare, essential appearance is intended to give an impression of sincerity. Any architecture expressing an archaic or frugal or even at times primitive atmosphere may also be considered naked.

Today, the return to nakedness in architecture may be interpreted as the symptom of the definitive crisis of post-modernism, of its masks and coverings that no longer represent a world with an ever-increasing need for “naked” essentialness.

Rem Koolhaas has defined architecture as a chaotic adventure. Nothing could be more true than that of the last two decades. Never has architecture been so unbridled and so extraordinary: the architectural cast has never been so wide and their works so diverse. What though if you are new to the subject? Today, sustainable building means planning and producing structures that offer their users a high degree of comfort while only requiring a small amount of energy to operate.

This entails: a high degree of thermal comfort, a good supply of daylight, good sound insulation with respect to both external and internal sources of noise, good room acoustics, the avoidance of any problems whatsoever with condensation or mold, and such a low energy requirement that especially gentle and efficient methods can be used to meet the remaining demand.

At first glance, it might seem quite difficult to fulfill all these requirements. Taken together, the various textbooks on building physics and building automation and the large number of EN and SIA standards now in existence are more confusing than they are useful.

About the authors:

Arnt Cobbers studied art history, history and musicology, and did his PhD in medieval church architecture. He lives as a freelance author in Berlin, and has written several books, mainly about history and the architectural history of Berlin. His monographs about Erich Mendelsohn and Marcel Breuer were published by Taschen Verlag. He is also the editor of music magazine Concerti.

Oliver Jahn studied literature, philosophy, and linguistics. He has worked as a freelance writer for Die Welt, the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Rheinischer Merkur, as an editor at Suhrkamp Verlag, and as design and architecture editor at Monopol magazine. Currently he is director of architecture and design at Architectural Digest magazine.
