Brick by Brick. The world’s most innovative brick buildings

Of all building materials in the world, brick is one of the most enduring and ubiquitous. Traces of brickmaking date back to 7500 BC and fired brick first made its appearance in about 3500 BC. Since then, the trusty brick has shown amazing resilience and remains one of the mainstays of contemporary architecture. Rooted in tradition in countries as different as China and the Netherlands, it is inexpensive, flexible in use, and can also be ecologically fabricated.

This comprehensive two-volume set tours the world to cover the most exciting and innovative brick buildings of the past 15 years, from Argentina to New Zealand. True to all TASCHEN architecture tomes, it includes new talents like Argentina’s Diego Arraigada and Vietnam’s Nguyen Hai Long as well as established starchitects such as Tadao Ando and Peter Zumthor. Featured buildings showcase the variety of brick applications across cultural, domestic, infrastructure, and leisure spaces, including Tate Modern Switch House by Herzog & De Meuron, Tidy Architects’ Amorio Restaurant in Santiago, and Mass Design Group’s Maternity Waiting Village in Kasungu, Malawi.

Where the grass really is greener. Eco-friendly building in the world today

The most exciting new buildings in the world are now almost all environmentally aware, sustainable, and conceived to consume far less energy than ever before. That architecture is one of the major sources of greenhouse gases in the world makes this new trend all the more significant. This book brings the best examples of green projects from the Architecture Now! series together with numerous new, never-seen-before projects. Well-known architects like Frank Gehry and Norman Foster are present right alongside young, up-and-coming creators from Latin America, the United States, Europe, and Asia. This is not a technical book, nor are its contents limited to any predefined category. Being “green” means being aware of the responsibility implied in the construction and use of modern buildings, and there are many ways to express this rising consciousness. Some solutions, the ones generally called “passive,” are as old as the history of architecture, while others are born of cutting-edge technologies. Both approaches and many more are included in this groundbreaking collection of 100 of the world’s most innovative and recent eco-friendly buildings.

Timberland. The wooden structures of the 21st century

Not so very long ago, some might have considered wood a material of the past, long since replaced by more modern components such as concrete and steel. The truth is radically different. Bolstered by new manufacturing techniques and ecological benefits, wood has seen a fabulous resurgence in contemporary construction.

This double-volume survey explores how architects around the world have created and invented with this elementary material. Featuring follies, very large buildings, and ambitious urban renewal schemes, it celebrates the diverse deployment of wood from architects in China, Chile, and everywhere in between. We see how wood can at once transform urban spaces, as in the Metropol Parasol in Seville by Jürgen Mayer H., and allow for sensitive interventions in natural environments, as at the Finnish Forest Research Institute by SARC Architects, or the Termas Geométricas Hot Springs Complex by Germán del Sol.

True to all TASCHEN architecture tomes, the book pays tribute to many emerging international talents, as well as to such renowned figures as Tadao Ando to Renzo Piano. It celebrates each of these architect’s vision and innovation, as well as investigating the techniques, trends, and principles that have informed their work with wood. It examines the computer-guided milling that has allowed for novel new forms, the responsible harvesting that allows wood to align with our environmental concerns, and, above all, wood’s enduring appeal to our senses and our psyche, comforting hectic modern lives with a sense of arcadian beauty and simplicity.

This book looks exclusively at the finest examples of contemporary residences from Australian and New Zealand designers and architects. From award-winning luxury residences, to simple beach shacks, inner-city apartments, rural retreats and family homes, these 100 homes reflect the way we live, or aspire to live in the 21st century. This entirely new list of homes reflects the wide variety and originality of talent and design direction that is on offer in both countries, and just why the ‘Down Under’ vernacular is so appealing and influential around the world.

The greatest challenge in designing homes is negotiating the delicate balance between aesthetics and the personal desires of the occupants. While it`s important for the structure to reflect the vision and style of the architect, the client must ultimately feel at home beneath the roof. It is particularly interesting, therefore, to examine the homes that architects create for themselves. If houses reflect their owners` personalities, then architects` own homes are like autobiographies. Location, layout, style, lighting, artwork, furnishings — every detail adds color to the story. Each of these 100 dwellings, presented A-Z by architect, speaks more about its designer than any other building possibly could.

This book guides us through the most beautiful cathedrals from Prague to Bogota, with magnificent color photographs and original stories. The start of our journey is, of course, Rome: the center of Catholic Christianity. Here, we can marvel at the sublime art of Michelangelo and the majestic beauty of the basilica di San Pietro. We then continue our travels across five continents, visiting the highlights of 1500 years of Christian architecture: the harmonious Gothic style of York minster, the cloister complex of Rila, the golden mosaics of San Vitale in Ravenna. Each of these cathedrals has, apart from artistic beauty and religious function, its own, unique history. The cathedral of Mexico City, built on the remnants of an Aztec sanctuary, is a lasting memory of the colonial past. On the other hand, the Berliner Gedachtniskirche is an affirmation of hope for peace on earth. All the cathedrals in this book have a story to tell, together with inspiring symbolism and sacred beauty.

They proudly display their fountains and statues and seductively lure tourists to their galleries and coffee house terraces. The journey begins on the beautiful Campo van Siena and goes via Vrijthof in Maastricht and the lovely Place des Vosges in Paris to the fairy tale-like Rigestan square in Samarkand and much more.

Many people are familiar with Russia"s most visible landmarks, particularly those in Moscow: the Kremlin, Red Square and St Basil"s Cathedral. Yet these are only three of Russia"s architectural, cultural, and historical treasures. With this book, discover the rich heritage of Russia"s fortresses, palaces, cathedrals, museums, monasteries, and cities. From the era of the Kievan Rus in the 9th century, the Tatars in the 13th and 14th centuries, to the 16th through 18th centuries, the time of the Tsars and of Imperial Russia, Russia"s treasures predating the 20th century are examples of sheer elegance. The Grand Palace of Peterhof and the Peterhof Fountains, for example, in St. Petersburg, embody the Tsars" appreciation for Classicism, while Trinity Cathedral, in the Sergiyev Posad monastery, dating to the 14th century, shows reverence for the Orthodox Church in shining onion domes.

Russia"s 20th-century treasures are towering examples of beauty on an awe-inspiring scale. The vast stretches of the All-Russian Exhibition Center, for example, and the "seven sisters" skyscrapers illustrate the Soviet ideals of beauty. The book"s journey begins in Moscow, where these 20th-century structures are balanced by an array of cathedrals, churches, and monasteries. Beyond Moscow, the Golden Ring (the circle of culturally and artistically significant churches, monasteries, and towns) expands on Russian traditions and architectural heritage. In addition, the treasures of St Petersburg are fully catalogued here, as well as those in other parts of the country. From start to finish, this is a book to savor, as you discover the true range and depth of Russia"s riches.
