Renzo Mongiardino
ID: 17878
Видавництво: Officina Libraria

Roomscapes is not only a beautiful testament to Mongiardino’s imaginative creations, the magnificent rooms he re-shaped and decorated in ancient Italian and Parisian palaces, English houses, New York apartments, but it is an important text that analyses space, function, decoration and lighting of rooms. It is meant as a guide to conceive spaces that are inhabited through time and by time. Sketches, drawings, and models by Mongiardino, next to the images of the finished rooms, make the creative process clear and showcase his extraordinary ability and taste.

Roomscapes was originally published in 1993 and has long been out of print.

Contents: Preface by Giovanni Agosti; Introduction; Part one: The genesis of a room; Sketches; Chapter one: Space, measure, and models; Chapter two: The function of a room and its appearance; Chapter three: Decoration: ways to invent it, transform it, correct it; Chapter four: Decoration and the appeal of the exotic; Part two: Illusion: the eye deceived; Chapter five: Materials and the simulation of materials; Chapter two: The birth and development of perspective; Conclusion; Appendix: 16 unpublished sketches by Renzo Mongiardino.

About the Author:

Renzo Mongiardino, born in Genoa in 1916, was one of the world’s most renowned designers of the 60s, 70s and 80s, and remains highly influential. Although trained as an architect, and at a time when modernism ruled design, Mongiardino found inspiration in the likes of Bernini, Piranesi, Palladio, and the theater. He counted among his clients Gianni Agnelli, Lee Radizwill, Gianni Versace, Baron Thyssen-Bornemisza, Rudolf Nuryev, Valentino, and Baron Guy de Rothschild. Equally at home in the world of performance, he collaborated with Franco Zeffirelli on many films, including The Taming of the Shrew with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton; and designed the set for Maria Callas’s triumphant return to opera in Tosca at Covent Garden. He died in 1998 at the age of 82.

Building spaces of equilibrium: Norm Architects’ sense of humane simplicity helps to shape environments that feel just as good as they look.

Guided by the purpose of wellbeing, the essence of Norm Architects’ style is balance: richness focused by restraint, simplicity imbued with warmth, complexity heightened by order. Be it architecture, interiors, or furniture, Norm’s unique brand of soft minimalism speaks to the mind as much as the body, creating and curating spaces for all.

The first self-curated monograph by Norm Architects, Soft Minimal showcases a range of works which facilitated their establishment as key figures within Nordic design. Presenting residential and commercial projects throughout Scandinavia, Italy and Japan, Norm reflects on Nordic traditions, modernist principles, and the importance of natural materials. Exploring a creative process that makes the visual speak to all senses, the book becomes insightful, inspirational, and deeply poetic.

Situated in one of Copenhagen’s oldest streets, Norm Architects are deeply embedded in their context and apply their principles in projects worldwide. Their expertise lies in finding that sweet spot between having nothing left to add, or to take away.

Aaron Betsky and Gideon Fink Shapiro, Photographs by Andrew Pielage
ID: 16340
Видавництво: Rizzoli

50 Lessons to Learn from Frank Lloyd Wright begins with a simple question. What lessons can designers today learn from Frank Lloyd Wright?

Unlike recent books focusing on Wright’s tumultuous personal life and the Taliesin Fellowship, and equally unlike certain works that paint Wright as a mythical hero or genius, this handsome and valuable volume aims to reveal some of the design tools Wright used to create exceptional architecture, interiors, and landscapes — and how we may glean insight from an American master and find inspiration for the thoughtful design of our own homes. By means of succinct examples, pithy texts by noted architecture experts Aaron Betsky and Gideon Fink Shapiro, and evocative visuals provided by photographer Andrew Pielage, they share fifty lessons, or "learning points," with an eye to Wright-designed houses and interiors, ranging from "Let Nature Inspire You," "Screen, Don’t Close," and "Embroider Rooms with Textiles," to "Look to Asia," "Design for Resilience" and "Balance the Whole."

Each lesson is accompanied by color photographs, original Wright drawings, newly commissioned diagrams, thoughtful analysis by the authors, and pearls of wisdom gathered from the master's trove of writings on architecture and design.

Beyond specific lessons, this volume offers an informal yet richly detailed introduction to this seminal figure, world-famous for his romantic Fallingwater and magical Guggenheim Museum, and will be of much interest to the budding architecture enthusiast as well as to the interior designer, to those seeking ideas for their own homes, and to fans of Frank Lloyd Wright looking for just the right book.

About the Authors:

Aaron Betsky is a critic, curator, educator, lecturer, and author of more than a dozen books. He is director of Architecture + Design at Virginia Tech. Previously, he was dean of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture and, after independence, president of the School of Architecture at Taliesin. Gideon Fink Shapiro is an architecture and design writer based in New York and co-author of The New Residential Colleges at Yale: A Conversation Across Time. Andrew Pielage is an internationally published architectural and travel photographer based in Phoenix, Arizona, on a mission to photograph all remaining Frank Lloyd Wright designs. His work has appeared in such publications as National Geographic Traveler and Vanity Fair.

Written by Ilse Crawford and Edwin Heathcote
ID: 12768
Видавництво: Rizzoli

The renowned designer and style guru Ilse Crawford showcases her body of influential, holistic work for the first time, articulating her groundbreaking philosophies for design and living.

Studioilse, the award-winning design studio founded by Ilse Crawford, bridges the worlds of interior design, architecture, and product design with the philosophy of putting the human being at the center. Fascinated by what drives us and makes us feel alive, Crawford says: "When I look at making spaces, I don’t just look at the visual. I’m much more interested in the sensory thing, in thinking about it from the human context, the primal perspective, the thing that touches you."

Featuring Studioilse’s work to date, from private residences to hotels, restaurants, and retail projects, this book illustrates the effectiveness of design grounded in human needs and desires. Layering materials and textures, combined with her understanding of human behavior, Crawford’s designs are sensual and accessible. A forerunner of the holistic design movement a decade ago, her humanistic approach has now become the norm.

This volume illustrates why Crawford’s design philosophy is so seminal — her work has influenced not only a generation of Dutch and European designers, but also Americans due to her acclaimed Soho House New York.

With new photography and essays by Crawford and design critic Edwin Heatcote, this inspirational volume is sure to be one of the most important design books of the year.

About the Authors:

Ilse Crawford is a designer and the head of the department of man and well-being at the prestigious Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands. Edwin Heathcote is the architecture and design correspondent for The Financial Times in London.

John Pile and Judith Gura

Видавництво: Laurence King Publishing

A History of Interior Design tells the story of 6,000 years of domestic and public space. This fully updated fourth edition includes a completely new chapter on twenty-first-century interior design and a heavily revised chapter on the late twentieth century.

Interior design is a field that includes construction, architecture, furniture, decoration, technology and product design. This one-volume history weaves together these topics in a fascinating narrative that runs from cave dwellings and temple architecture, through Gothic cathedrals and Renaissance palaces, to the grand civic spaces of the nineteenth century and the sleek interiors of modern skyscrapers.

Embedded in a social and political context, detailed discussions of famous buildings, from cathedrals to Koolhaas, are interspersed with investigations of the domestic vernacular – the cottages, farmhouses, apartments and city terraces inhabited by ordinary people.

The new edition of this bestselling history includes over 50 new images and many previously black and white images updated to colour.

About the Authors:

Judith Gura is a professor of design history and theory, directing the design history programme at the New York School of Interior Design. She is the author of critically praised books on interior design, Scandinavian furniture and furniture styles.

John Pile was Professor of Design at the renowned Pratt Institute Brooklyn for most of his teaching career. He is the author of twelve books on furniture, colour, draftsmanship, office planning and other aspects of interior design.

Jean-Louis Remilleux

Видавництво: ACC Art Books

With its sun-drenched sands and Mediterranean waters, Sicily has been a favoured destination of travellers for centuries. History is alive on this island, from ancient accounts of the Greeks, Romans, Arabs and Normans; to the journals of wealthy young European men embarking on the Grand Tour. This book captures the sun-steeped aesthetic of the island, while detailing the restoration of one of its finest attractions: the Di Lorenzo del Castelluccio palace.

Marquis de Castelluccio was one of the last “servals” or “leopards” of Sicily – wealthy aristocrats who flooded the island with luxury. Following his death, his home fell to ruin. A half-century later, Jean-Louis Remilleux fell in love with this dilapidated 18th-century palace and made it his mission to restore it. Unveiled for the first time in this beautifully illustrated book, the Di Lorenzo del Castelluccio palazzo is one of the finest testaments to Sicilian architecture and art.

Today, lush green palm trees welcome you to the palace’s imposing front façade. Frescoes, arabesques, masks, imitation marble, ceilings and wainscoting have all restored to their former glory, over decades of elaborate work. This book charts the restoration process and celebrates the astonishing end results. It contains an album’s worth of photographs that capture the beauty of this palace beneath the Mediterranean sun.

About the Author:

Jean-Louis Remilleux is the television producer behind “Secrets d’Histoire”, a popular French show that delves into mythical characters from history. He has authored several interview books with figures such as Jacques Vergès and Michel Serrault. In addition to the Di Lorenzo del Castelluccio palace, his passion for art and history has led him to restore the castle of Groussay, in Montfort l’Amaury, and the castle of Digoine, in Burgundy. He is an “Honorary Citizen” of Noto, where the Di Lorenzo del Castelluccio palace is located.

New villas and houses by the acclaimed German studio Alexander Brenner Architects

Few architecture firms in Europe have addressed the villa as a building type as consistently as Alexander Brenner Architects. The studio is widely known for designs that are characterized by plastic-geometric facades often resembling constructivist tableaux. What all of Alexander Brenner’s designs have in common is a truly holistic approach to the task. A house’s interior, kitchen, cupboards, and other built-in furniture are attended to with the same care for detail as its exterior. Corresponding gardens with soft, curved, sensual forms surround, and contrast, Brenner’s cubic architectural sculptures.

This new book follows up on two successful previous volumes published in 2011 and 2015. It features six villas and houses realized between 2015 and 2022, including the architect’s own home in Stuttgart, the Brenner Research House. Lavishly illustrated with masterful photographs taken by Zooey Brwon, as well as with plans, drawings and further images, it documents them each building in rich detail. An essay and informative text on the projects by Alexander Brenner and an appraisal of his oeuvre by architecture publicist Holger Reiners round out this volume that offers rich inspiration for anyone interested in contemporary housing design and villas.

About the Author:

Alexander Brenner graduated in architecture and urban design from University of Stuttgart and established his own Stuttgart-based firm in 1990. He has gained wide acclaim for his signature houses and villas, yet the firm’s portfolio also comprises retail spaces, art galleries, restaurants and bars.

Sibylle Kramer

Видавництво: Braun

The chalet is a building type that enjoys lasting popularity all over the world. Dating back to the herdsman’s hut in the Alpine region, it became a longed-for destination and the most preferred holiday domicile in the 19th century with the emerging fascination with the Alps. Today, architects and designers are primarily inspired by the constantly redefined interplay of sublime nature, traditional architecture, regional building typologies, individual design, and modern formal language that pushes them to reach magnificent creative peaks.

The projects selected for this volume are diverse and remarkably multifaceted: From a traditional construction with a flat gable roof, wide roof overhang, and robust timber façade, to contemporary, thoroughly idiosyncratic interpretations with clear lines, creative choice of materials, and fine details. However, the artful staging of the imposing mountain world in the interior design plays a decisive role among all presented chalets.

About the Author:

After completing a degree in architecture in architecture Sibylle Kramer worked for gmp von Gerkan, Marg and Partners in different functions, such as Chief Representative in Beijing. In 2001 she set up her successful architecture practice in Hamburg which has received various awards and competition prizes. Kramer is also a frequent participant on selection committees for architectural competitions.

Phillip James Dodd
ID: 15466
Видавництво: Images

In the follow-up to the critically acclaimed The Art of Classical Details, Phillip James Dodd continues his look at some of the finest examples of contemporary classical architecture in Great Britain and the United States, while also examining how collaboration is the key to their successful design. In reality, collaborative relationships are rare, especially amongst designers, where each is often focused on their own individual objectives and unable to transcend their own egos. Often used as a catch phase, but not often realised, true collaboration requires an understanding – and an appreciation – of the role that all parties play in the design and construction of a home. An Ideal Collaboration includes the work of some of the most notable names in contemporary residential design. Architects, decorators, landscape designers, consultants, builders, craftsmen, artists and vendors, all address the design process and the pivotal role that collaboration plays in creating cohesive timeless designs.

- The most definitive book on 'classical detailing' in years
- Covers all the fundamentals of classical architecture
- Features a foreword by Ellie Cullmann
- Includes projects by Quinlan Terry, perhaps the most well-known classical architect practising today
- Other UK architects include Robert Adam and Hugh Petter, Julian Bicknell, Robert Franklin, Digby Harris and John Simpson

“Showcasing 25 residences by today’s leading classical architects, this wonderful new book also addresses the fundamental issue of collaboration between architect, decorator, landscaper, and the enormous cast of characters who bring their formidable talents to the realization of every project. An Ideal Collaboration is an important addition to the literature of architecture and design.” – Ellie Cullman

An Ideal Collaboration shares a place in my library next to volumes on great 20th-century Classicists. It is essential as a visual reference to the continued evolution of timeless style.” – Steven Gambrel

About the Author:

A native of Manchester, England, Phillip James Dodd attended the prestigious Prince of Wales' Institute of Architecture in London - where he was taught by many of the architects featured in this book. He received a Degree in Architecture from his hometown university, before moving to America, where he gained a Masters in Architecture from the University of Notre Dame. As a well-regarded expert on classical architecture and interiors, Phillip has worked for some of the most recognized residential architectural firms in America. He is a Fellow Emeritus at the Institute of Classical Architecture (ICA), and Classical America (CA), where from 2006 to 2009 he served as the jury coordinator for the annual Arthur Ross Awards. He has taught classical design at the ICA & CA and at Notre Dame, and has been a guest critic for the Interiors Departments at Parson's School of Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology.
