Interior designer David Naylor embraces the broad range of possibilities presented by a world of materials old and new, of objects both found and manufactured.
He calls his approach "infusion design," by which he means capturing the ideas of the Old World without forgetting about the present, stirring melting pots of cultures and allowing opposites to coexist, and pulling together objects from around the world. The timelessness, natural warmth, and adaptability of the popular Southwestern style aesthetic provide an appealing backdrop for his interpretations, which eschew the clichés while retaining the essence.
The architectural elements of the region-round beams, adobe walls, natural wood finishes-create a versatile aesthetic that can embrace an infinite variety of designs, while the nomadic nature of Americans generally, who move freely about the country bringing their favourite decor items with them, makes for limitless opportunities to infuse designs with intriguing juxtapositions and unexpected placements.
Яркая и насыщенная жизнь одной из знаковых фигур дизайна XX века – архитектора, декоратора Оливера Меселя. Более 200 страниц эксцентричного творчества, включающие не публиковавшиеся ранее снимки.
A vibrant study of one of the iconic figures of twentieth-century design, whose Romantic, whimsical, and wholly original style influenced a generation of architects and decorators. Oliver Messel was one of England’s foremost interior designers of the twentieth century, whose work also spanned the worlds of the stage design, film, and architecture. Born into a creative family of wealthy bankers, his career began in 1925 designing for Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. He eventually became an internationally celebrated designer, branching out into drama, film, opera, interior design, textiles, and architecture. Romanticism and eccentricity were hallmarks of Messel’s style. His sets were famed for their exquisite delicacy, impossible detail, subtlety of color, and inventive use of materials. From the 1930s to the postwar period, Messel explored the fields of interior design and architecture, eventually designing numerous houses built on the islands of Mustique and Barbados for the jet set of the 1960s and ‘70s, among them Antony Armstrong-Jones (Earl of Snowdon) and Princess Margaret. Oliver Messel is filled with previously unpublished images that chronicle a unique, eccentric, and, until now, largely overlooked oeuvre that reached across several mediums and continues to influence insiders from the worlds of interior design, architecture, and fashion.

Organizing is a process and not one that requires you to tackle the entire house in one sweeping session. As such, you'll find that this book is arranged according to the various hot spots in the home, starting with the area inside the front door and continuing through to the garage. Chapter by chapter, room by room, youll find helpful and practical techniques for creating (and maintaining) order.
A lavish survey of the grotesque style in European painting and decoration, from Roman times to the late nineteenth century.
In the fifteenth century, the ruins of Nero's Domus Aurea were discovered in Rome. The first explorers to enter the interior of this spectacular palace complex had the sensation of finding themselves in a series of grottoes, and this is why the fanciful frescoes and floor mosaics discovered there were called "grotesques."
A fashionable form of ornamentation in ancient Rome, grotesques consist of loosely connected motifs, often incorporating human figures, birds, animals, and monsters, and arranged around medallions filled with painted scenes. Fifteenth-century artists such as Perugino, Signorelli, Filippino Lippi, and Mantegna copied the ancient Roman examples; the most famous use of the style was Raphael's Loggie in the Vatican Palace, which became immensely famous and influential all over Europe.
This magnificently illustrated book covers the entire history of the grotesque in European art, from its Roman origins through the Renaissance to the late nineteenth century. It illuminates how grotesque decoration was transformed in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries into arabesque, chinoiserie, and singeries, and how it continued in the nineteenth century, leading eventually to Art Nouveau.
This volume is based on the well-known 1892 collection of ornament designs, The Practical Decorator and Ornamentist, by George A. and Maurice A. Audsley. Originally conceived as a collection of samples for architects and decorative painters, many professionals have found inspiration in this book, including cabinet-makers, ceramicists, and engravers.
This way, these ornaments found their way into tapestry designs, carpets and upholstery fabrics. Ornaments is not restricted to a mere reproduction of the original designs, though; it also provides commentary based on the original annotations of the Audsleys and describes the background of ornament from a perspective of the history of style and cultural studies, from Ancient Greece to the Middle Ages, from the Renaissance to classicism, from Japanese style to floral style. The book is completed by detailed instructions on how to copy the ornaments.

A new generation of homeowners and architects is finding original solutions and unusual locations for contemporary single-family homes in urban areas.
Cities are bustling metropolises, melting pots, where the action is, and where history is written. Many of us prefer to live in cities—at least most of the time. As cities expand and become more dense, architects must face the growing challenge of finding new and unusual ways for their citizens to live, both with each other and individually.
Today, a compelling spectrum of innovative options for urban family living can be found in our cities: in the most narrow gaps between buildings, in courtyards, on derelict land, on rooftops, in industrial ruins, or in districts that have not yet been gentrified. With more creativity than money, unconventional concepts are turning existing objects, rooms, old buildings, and spaces in the urban landscape into future homes. All of these locations offer modern city dwellers the alluring possibility of living in the midst of it all while simultaneously enjoying their own space.
Our House in the City not only presents striking photos and detailed architectural plans of urban living solutions, but it also tells the stories behind some of the most exciting architecture in recent years. The book describes the needs of the homebuilders, the impact of the immediate surroundings on the included projects, and the visions of a new generation of architects. It then explores how these factors combine to influence the design and architecture of a home as well as the lives lived inside them.
The selection of work in the book ranges from the novel use of space in the most densely populated cities in the world to more open structures on the urban periphery. Whether the featured homes were created through renovation or completely new constructions, Our House in the City lays the foundation for a contemporary, dynamic relationship between the city and potential homeowners. The book proves that adventurous urban living can also mean home sweet home.
