Stephen Crafti has always been drawn to black houses, irrespective of the materials they are constructed from  be they zinc, timber or simply painted. Unlike many modern houses that scream for attention, black houses sit quietly in the landscape, accentuating the often verdant landscape. There is also a sense of calm and tranquillity about a black home.

Crafti doesn't live in a black house, but he recently upgraded a 1930s home. Everything I touched was changed to black, from the timber fences to the timber floorboards. I even added black curtains and planted black beared irises in his garden. Using black seemed to unify disparate elements in and around his home. While there are numerous black features in Crafti's house, his ideal would be to live in a contemporary black house, with black furniture and black walls. And maybe even a garden filled with black plants. This book, showcasing black houses, is the starting point towards this goal.

For each bathroom there is an image of the whole house (placing it in context and providing a flavour of the general design style), images of the bathroom, and a floor plan showing its relation to other spaces. The pages that follow are entirely devoted to detailed drawings showing the arrangement and construction of the bathroom, in particular sections, elevations and construction details of all the fitted units and joinery. These drawings are all made to a consistent style and to a set number of scales for easy comparison. Dimensions are also included with the drawings as well as details of fitted units (baths, showers, basins, etc.). The credits for the project include contact details of suppliers so that the exact materials and fixtures can be sourced. The projects are arranged into chapters by type of dominant material: glass, steel and stone. About the Author:

Kelly Wearstler is the author of Modern Glamour and the founder of the Los Angeles architectural interior design firm kwid (Kelly Wearstler Interior Design). Her designs for the trendsetting Viceroy resorts from California to the Caribbean; such taste-making hotels as Maison 140 and Avalon; unique office, retail, and leisure spaces, including BG restaurant and lounge in Manhattan's Bergdorf Goodman; and upscale residences such as the Trousdale Estate have been profiled in House and Garden, House Beautiful, Interior Design, Elle Décor, Vogue, and W. Wearstler is also designer of her own kwid line of furnishings and accessories. She lives in Beverly Hills with her husband, hotelier Brad Korzen, and their sons.
