This volume celebrates the warmth and easy elegance of traditional Southern architecture and interior design, featuring houses of unpretentious and old-fashioned grace that showcase the talents of the South’s finest design professionals.

Comfort and hospitality are words that express the spirit of simple Southern style. Featured in tantalizing photographs is a discerning selection of residences decorated by Bobby McAlpine, Ken Tate, Ryan Gainey, Jackye Lanham, Amelia Handegan, and others. Located in old Southern cities such as Atlanta, Charleston, Savannah, and New Orleans, as well as seaside and mountain retreats, these intimate dwellings are steeped in architectural tradition. The residences profiled illustrate fresh design interpretations of romantic Southern style, such as a New Orleans double-shotgun with a modern all-white palette, a nineteenth-century summer cottage with updated coastal decor, and a Louisiana plantation house with handsome Creole antiques.

Two sections, "Pure and Simple" and "Simply Elegant," explore the varied ways that Southerners express their love of comfort and gracious living. Dating from the eighteenth century to the present, the houses featured exemplify historic styles that evolved in response to their natural settings, inviting families to live in harmony with their surroundings. Integrating time-honored lessons of the past, these cozy dwellings also incorporate contemporary design sensibilities, making them especially appealing for today’s lifestyle.

The award-winning designer and author of Rooms showcases inspiring opportunities for the exteriors, interiors, and details of houses in this lavishly photographed book

Celebrated designer Mariette Himes Gomez believes that a house becomes a home only when it is infused with personal touches, when its individual parts flow together logically, and when it assumes a warm and welcoming character. In Houses, Gomez begins by inviting readers to consider the many elements that unify a house. She reveals how each detail-from the doors, fireplaces, and staircase, to the more conceptual elements of balance, color, and movement-contribute to the home's overall aesthetic, and how each can be combined to create a certain effect. She provides practical guidelines for building, buying, or renovating to create the perfect home, while illustrating how to instill flow and harmony in your overall design. Subscribing to the philosophy that less is more, Gomez reveals how to create homes of unparalleled beauty and grace.

Complementing Gomez's invaluable advice are stunning photographs of the interiors, exteriors, and details of breathtaking houses in a variety of gorgeous settings. An inspirational guide for every design-minded home buyer, builder, or renovator, Houses illuminates the world of possibility that opens up when you create your own home.

Wood-paneled libraries, sumptuously appointed interiors, mudrooms, paddocks, and stables are all signature elements of an equestrian-based style that is aspired to across the country, from Lexington, Kentucky, to Potomac, Maryland, and Greenwich, Connecticut.

The beginnings and epitome of this style of interiors and architecture are to be found in Middleburg, Virginia, where for centuries a lifestyle and architecture have been honed to produce some of the most beautiful homes anywhere. This luxurious volume ranges from c. 1730 Oakland Green Farm in Loudon County - a quintessential Virginia homestead originally constructed of hand-hewn wood that has evolved to incorporate fieldstone, limestone, and locally fired brick - and historic Castle Hill in Keswick - a stately Federal mansion of brick set on more than 1,000 acres of farmland and forests - to the 1941 Henchman’s Lea, an outstanding example of American Revival architecture in Fauquier County and a working farm created to allow for the enjoyment of beauty inherent in rural Virginia living.

Through all-new, color photography, Hunt Country Style showcases twenty-five houses that wonderfully epitomize this tradition and evoke its most inviting and beloved features.

Hybrid Interiors presents a collection of the most innovative and imaginative homes culled from the world of contemporary interior design. Each interior defines a new formula for projecting living spaces; they are not unlike laboratories where sophisticated combinations of styles emanating from different cultures and centuries are created. Design cues from the forties to the seventies are seamlessly blended in an apartment in an eighteenth-century building in London, a modern residence in Florence functions as an art gallery and living space, each of the interiors included has its own unique personality and share only one thing: they fit the description “hybrid.” The simplicity and visual coherence of the combinations of styles and functions shown belies the fact that each interior is the fruit of complex and considered architectural elaborations. Richly illustrated with more than three hundred color photographs, Hybrid Interiors proposes a tour, in twenty-five stages from Amsterdam to Rome, from Berlin to Beijing, of settings that give rise to a studied dialogue between contemporary design and historic preservation, living space and working space, and classic style and popular culture.
