Known as the gardener of fashion, Ken Scott designed large-scale flowers that blossomed on fabrics and whole outfits and have recently been rediscovered in Gucci’s Epilogue collection.

The American fashion designer Ken Scott was a masterful creator of fabrics, mapping out flowers with romanticism and multiplying them as he transformed them into something that stood out and reflected his eclectic personality.

Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Scott moved to Milan in the 1950s, where he pioneered many colorful patterned fabrics and collections and founded the Falconetto brand. Known for bright floral patterns with peonies, roses, poppies, sunflowers, petunias, and asters, Scott followed a maximalist design philosophy when it came to his vibrant line. In the 1960s, he is said to have been one of the first designers to showcase calf-length skirts in his collection, while in 1970s he rose to fame because of his floral-printed suits for both men and women and unisex catwalks.

They called him “the fashion gardener,” but he was so many things: a gifted painter, an experimental restaurateur, an ingenious textile artist, and one of the most brilliant design savants of the twentieth century.

Edited together with the Ken Scott Foundation, including an interview with Alessandro Michele, this book provides an in-depth exploration of his archives and thoroughly reflects his imagination for everything from loungewear and luggage to silk scarves and swimsuits, all joyfully splashed with his colors, sunflowers, poppies, petunias, and peonies.

Louise Bourgeois, who has produced art since the 1930s, began in the 1990s to use her clothes and the clothes of her loved ones as components in her sculptures and drawings. It is as much a reincarnation of her past and her childhood as a confirmation of her relationship with memory. Her visual approach to fabrics transforms decorative accessories into emotional and personal references which, especially in her Cells and later in her drawings, create representations of a tormented and at the same time powerful womanhood. Further development of the artist’s work began in 2002: exploiting the iridescent colours and formal structural properties of pieces of her clothing, she created “The Fabric Drawings,” astonishing works alternating between floral figurative pieces and chromatic abstractions.

This set of images is collected here in its entirety for the first time, constituting the closest thing yet to a general catalogue.

• This collection of pictorial and sculptural images is brought together in this anthology in a unique and exhaustive way.
• The publication is a means of approaching her distinctive iconographic and visual explosions and adding to our knowledge of the artist herself.
• Bourgeois’s emotional and figurative strength, translated into compositions of colour and form, is further testimony to her important contribution to the history of modern and contemporary art.

Видавництво: Rizzoli

An intimate look at the ethos of one of today’s most exciting designers, and the people and places that have shaped her maximalist English country aesthetic.

British interior designer Flora Soames founded her eponymous firm in 2009 and launched an acclaimed collection of fabrics and wallpapers in 2019. Informed by her background in art and furniture, her style exudes the traditional charm of English country homes while incorporating modern, original touches that are comfortable and design-led. This embrace of old and new — along with Soames’s passion for collecting, heritage, color, and pattern — has resulted in an impressive portfolio of projects in the UK and beyond.

Inspired by the concept of a One Day Box — a place, real or imaginary, where we store fragments of our past that spark a feeling of connection — Soames presents her reflections on the concept of home, and explores the sentiments evoked by certain objects during seminal moments in her life. From personalities and places to beloved objects, Soames shows how our patchwork of memories can energize the process of creating and living in a home. Exquisite photographs of her projects — including her refurbished countryside cottage in Dorset, an architecturally prominent house in the Cotswolds, and her family’s home in North Norfolk — alongside images of vibrant fabrics and wallpaper bring her thoughts and distinctive style to life.

Flora Soames set up her design business in 2009 and launched a range of fabrics and wallpapers a decade later. One of House & Garden’s Top 100, her discerning eye and instinct for channeling both old and new has been formed through a lifetime love of collecting. She lives and works in Dorset, England.

The catalogues of the Paris Salons at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century provide a unique archive of illustrations of the decorative arts at a pivotal time in their development, the five previous volumes covering Jewellery, Furniture, Ceramics and Glass, and Objets d'Art.

The fabric designers of the Art Nouveau style who exhibited at the Paris Salons produced a remarkable oeuvre in printed and woven fabric, silk, lace, embroidery and tapestry.

Bookbinding was, and still is, a well-established French tradition, and bibliophiles commissioned unique bindings from artist-designers who, at the same time, were also creating and exhibiting non-bound leather goods - handbags, blotters, upholstery.

This volume is probably the most important in the series. Because of wear and tear, practically none of the approximate 1,200 textile and leatherware pieces illustrated have survived outside museum collections or appeared at auction, unlike the items covered by the earlier volumes.

The aim of this beautifully illustrated book is to offer a highly extensive and versatile anthology of pieces, accompanied on one hand by technical and in-depth captions and on the other by a scientifically documented yet concise and absorbing essay.

The whole collection is organised chronologically starting with the fabrics conceived by the artists of the Secessions (Berlin, Munich, Vienna), from Moser to Hoffman and Klimt, and those of Art Nouveau, to then go on to look at the problem of the fabrics with a Deco and Novecento flavour, and the production from the fifties, in European and the USA, with the influences of Informal artistic culture, then through the experiences of Pop Art, Op Art and Kinetic Art, up to the most contemporary successes.

The volume includes biographies of the designers and main manufacturers, a glossary of technical terms, a thematic bibliography and an index of names.

Deirdre Dyson

Видавництво: Thames & Hudson

A jargon-free introduction to the techniques of contemporary carpet design and creation

It is rare for a practitioner to present their thought processes, inspirations and techniques in a straightforward, no-nonsense, jargon-free way. Deirdre Dyson’s book is a welcome exception.

Dyson’s carpets are both works of art and works of design. They are also examples of superb craftsmanship. And, as this beautiful book reveals, they are also extremely pleasurable.

The book describes her journey from figurative painting into carpet design and carefully explains the thoughts, questions and challenges that occurred along the way, and the techniques required to support them.

The foreword by Professor Sir Christopher Frayling contextualizes Dyson’s award-winning work within discussions about art and design, and then Dyson herself reflects on her long experience of designing exquisite carpets.

The chapter ‘Techniques’ introduces the traditional methods she uses to create these carpets, and how these conventions can be manipulated to create stunning effects. ‘Process’ then explores the steps that lie behind any design. These chapters are followed by Dyson’s collections. Illustrated in full, they demonstrate her love of colour and her range of inspirations.

About the Authors

Lady Dyson met her husband James when both were students at the Byam Shaw School of Art. She has a store on the King’s Road in London, and in 2013 was the winner of ‘Best Studio Artist Design’ at the DOMOTEX Carpet Design Awards.

Professor Sir Christopher Frayling is Professor Emeritus of Cultural History at the Royal College of Art.

For the first time ever the highlights of a world renowned private collection are bundled in a book: over 300 tapestries and textile related objects such as hairpins and jewellery are showcased in this beautifully illustrated book. Much of the focus is on Coptic textiles. Coptic art is a term used either for the art of Egypt produced in the early Christian era or for the art produced by the Coptic Christians themselves.

This glorious book is filled with a wide-ranging history of textiles and 350 superb illustrations drawn from many countries and sources - vestments and costumes, samplers and pictures, great beds and furniture.

The story of embroidery and needlework is discussed within the fascinating context of the history of fabrics, of decorative costume, of interior decoration, of church and state ceremonial, of girls education, of furniture and pastimes. Silk, cotton, linen, and the significance of colours and dyes are also considered. Two interesting chapters reveal the worldwide fascination with influence of Chinese embroidery and Indian textiles.

With a broad account of the artistic achievements of every facet of decorative needlework, the book is rich with the art-historical background encompassing the most magnificent of all embroidery, the mediaeval English vestments so coveted by Popes and Bishops across Europe, to the domestic treasures created in more recent centuries. Baroque, Rococo, neo-classical and other period characteristics are each discussed with reference to works created by children, young girls, and ladies who made furniture coverings destined for posterity. The nineteenth century saw extremes of art and fashion ranging from Berlin woolwork to Art Needlework and the eclectic inspiration represented by William Morris, all leading to simpler modernist styles which evolved over the twentieth century.

The author sets in political and social context the whole panoply of textiles, distinguishing between the magnificent products of professional workshops and the uniquely individual and especially charming amateur embroideries that survive today amongst the most beautiful treasures of the decorative arts.

The development of textiles as an art form between 1940 and 1976, and the extent of collaboration between artists and textile manufacturers at this time, is unrivalled in modern art history. Raoul Dufy was the first twentieth-century artist to become seriously and successfully involved in producing textile designs. His work influenced and encouraged many other artists and textile companies in Britain, on the Continent and in America. After the war this movement really flowered with the involvement of leading artists of the day: Picasso, Matisse, Moore, Nicholson, Warhol, Steinberg, to name a few...

Artists' Textiles 1940-1976 is an important and comprehensive survey of this art form in Britain and America. There are approximately 200 colour images, many of which have never been seen before, alongside specially commissioned photography. Major artists featured: Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Henri Matisse, Henry Moore, Saul Steinberg, Eduardo Paolozzi, Fernand Leger, Ben Nicholson, Andy Warhol.

The top artistic quality of Berber carpets has already been a source of inspiration to artists such as Paul Klee and Le Corbusier. This book links the motifs of Berber carpets to rock art symbols and artefacts created by the first human civilisations, demonstrating that Berber carpets employ the same rules when using symbols and shapes.
