The first book to exclusively present Cleto Munaris latest creations in the field of the applied arts: a unique collection of art carpets.

Cleto Munari was born in Gorizia and he lives and works in Vicenza. After meeting Carlo Scarpa in 1973, who encouraged him in his work, he decided to focus his attention on the area of industrial design, and began to work for some of the most important companies in the world. Constantly in search of original ideas, over the years he has tirelessly been engaged in analyzing and experimenting with both forms and material. In 1985 he opened a laboratory-studio-jewelers, where, together with a group of worldclass architects, he designs and produces silver jewelry and other objects for avant-garde collections that truly represent historical revolutions in jewelry both in Italy and abroad, and have also led to the production of watches, pens and furniture.

Cleto Munaris objects have entered the permanent collections of some of the worlds top museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

The design revolutions of the early 20th century were woven into the very fabric of the carpets and rugs of that era. Carpets of the Art Deco Era, previously published as 'Art Deco and Modernist Carpets' and now reissued in PLC, is the most in-depth history on the subject.

It charts the evolution of carpet design out of the floral effusions of the Victorian salons and into the angular elegance of Art Deco and bold abstraction of Modernism popularized by the machine age. Such artists and designers as Picasso, Poiret, Gray, Delaunay, Matisse, Klee, and many more advanced the designs going on underfoot, making these rugs extremely collectible artworks in their own right.

Susan Day was Chief Librarian at the Institut Français d’Architecture for 23 years, and has acted as Scientific Advisor for the Louvre and Les Arts Décoratifs Museum.

The story of the French cashmere shawls of the 19th century and their rise to the heights of fashion. This treasure-trove will not only delight textile scholars and costume historians but is sure to appeal to anyone who loves gorgeous accessories

The delicate beauty of the cashmere shawl was first brought to Europe by the East India Companies and Napoleon’s campaigns. Woven in Kashmir, its fabric was so light that, according to legend, a whole shawl could be passed through a finger-ring. By the 19th century, these shawls were highly sought-after in France; French manufacturers soon saw that there was a market for more accessibly priced versions and started to create their own.

Monique Lévi-Strauss has spent more than thirty years collecting and studying these shawls and gathering rare documents to preserve their history. This completely revised, expanded and redesigned edition of her classic book on the subject illustrates nearly 300 of these beautiful items, superbly photographed to showcase their splendid original designs, alongside a wealth of archive material and contemporary paintings that show them being worn by their elegant owners.

A unique exploration of the close relationship between art and design, explored through the historic and contemporary fabric designs of Liberty, where avant-garde art has influenced the colourful, geometric collections for more than half a century

Liberty is renowned internationally for its fabrics, especially its floral patterns, but it also has a long history of developing bold, geometric designs. Many of these have been inspired by early 20th-century avant-garde art, notably by the Italian Futurists – by artists such as Giacomo Balla and Umberto Boccioni – and their English contemporaries the Vorticists, including Christopher Nevinson and Edward Wadsworth.

In anticipation of Liberty’s 150th anniversary, esteemed couturier and interior designer Federico Forquet has curated a striking new range of fabrics – the FuturLiberty Collection – that carries Liberty’s creative heritage into our own age.

The Futurist and Vorticist art that lies behind the new designs is explored by specialists Ester Coen and Richard Cork, while archivist Anna Buruma examines Liberty’s rich history of avant-garde designs. By illuminating the process by which the FuturLiberty Collection came into being, this highly visual study also reveals how art can inform design, making it contemporary, relevant and engaging.

About the Author:

Ester Coen is an expert on Italian Futurism and the international avant-garde. She has been Associate Professor at the University of Florence and Professor at the universities of Udine and L’Aquila. Richard Cork is an art historian, critic, curator and broadcaster. He has been an art critic for the Evening StandardThe ListenerThe Times and the New Statesman, and is a past Turner Prize judge.

This fascinating exploration will appeal to anyone interested in art history, fashion and style, textile design and world history

The golden age of European navigation brought a breathtaking variety of textile designs to travel across the globe. These textiles blended the traditional designs, skills and tastes of the cultures that produced them with those of their destinations, resulting in objects that are both beautiful and historically intriguing.

While previous studies have focused on this story from the viewpoint of trade, Interwoven Globe is the first book to investigate it as a history of design — and to approach it from a universal perspective. Richly illustrated texts examine the interrelationship of textiles, commerce and taste from the Age of Discovery to the 19th century, providing detailed discussions of more than 120 works.

From India, with its renowned mastery of dyed-and-painted cotton, to the sumptuous silks of Japan and China, Turkey and Iran, the paths of influence are traced westward to Europe and the Americas. Shaped by an emerging worldwide visual culture, the fashion for the ‘exotic’ in textiles, as well as in other goods and art forms, gave rise to what can be called the first global style.

From Pucci's psychedelic patterns to Iuter's skate-inspired prints: how Italian designers have led innovations in textiles throughout the 20th century

The dynamic geometrical patterns of Emilio Pucci; the dazzling trompe-l'oeil effects of Roberta di Camerino; the pop sensibilities of Gianni Versace and Franco Moschino; the bold street-style prints of Iuter and Sunnei--these and countless other innovations have made Italian design a leading force in the history of 20th-century textiles.

This volume documents the history of Italian textiles from the beginning of the 20th century through to the present day, exploring their evolution in relation to the dominant styles of various periods. This is a history deeply interwoven with the birth of the totemic "Made in Italy'' concept, as textiles have significantly contributed to Italy's international reputation as a bastion of high-quality fashion and design. Numerous Italian artists, fashion designers, product designers and companies have pioneered and popularized a vast range of manufacturing processes that incorporate local fabrics and innovative techniques.

Featuring sumptuous illustrations of finished fabrics, preparatory drawings and photographs, Italian Textiles compiles the country's most notable design coups. Among the thematic sections in the book are those dedicated to scarfs, skirts, shirts, ties, wallpapers, tablecloths and various other fabricated objects.

Designers include: Fede Cheti, Enrico Coveri, Roberta di Camerino, Dolce & Gabbana, Salvatore Ferragamo, Lucio Fontana, Piero Fornasetti, Mariano Fortuny, Gucci, Iuter, Franco Moschino, Bruno Munari, Gio Ponti, Prada, Emilio Pucci, Ken Scott, Ettore Sottsass, Sunnei, Valentino and Versace.
