In the Austria of the wild 1960s, the visionary designs of architects and artists garnered international attention.

Described as the "Austrian phenomenon," these projects and installations contained the concentrated creativity of the Austrian architectural neo-avant-garde between 1956 and 1973.

In Vienna, these avant-garde dreams came to be symbolized by Hans Hollein’s Retti Candle Shop and Hermann Czech’s many cafés and bars, which are still successful today, including the Kleines Café (Little Café), Wunderbar, and Salzamt.

The best-known protagonists of this scene include Hans Hollein, Walter Pichler, Raimund Abraham, Coop Himmelblau, Haus-Rucker-Co, Missing Link, and others.

The book is fully illustrated in color and consists of two parts.

The first contains "Documentation" of important publications from the years 1958–1973 in international trade journals like Archigram, Domus, Architectural Record, and Casabella, in which the young architects sought attention for their programs.

The second is "Reconstruction," a cross-section of images and texts from publications on the "Austrian phenomenon," elucidated and situated in the context of international architectural history by authors such as Friedrich Achleitner, Bart Lootsma, Stanislaus von Moos, Joseph Rykwert, Anthony Vidler, and others.

Once the greatest American example of a modern city served by infrastructure, Los Angeles is now in perpetual crisis. Infrastructure has ceased to support its urban plans, subordinating architecture to its own purposes. This out-of-control but networked world is increasingly organized by flows of objects and information. Static structures avoid being superfluous by joining this system as temporary containers for people, objects, and capital. This provocative collection of photography, essays, and maps looks at infrastructure as a way of mapping our place in the city and affecting change through architecture.

A project by the Network Architecture Lab and the LA Forum for Architecture & Urban Design featuring: Lane Barden, Barry Lehrman, David Fletcher, Steve Rowell, Sean Dockray, Fiona Whitton, Frank Ruchala, Matt Coolidge, CLUI, Warren Techentin, Ted Kane, Rick Miller, Roger Sherman, Deborah Richmond, Robert Sumrell. Kazys Varnelis, directs the Network Architecture Lab (Columbia University) and the AUDC collective.

No city has played a more seminal role in the development of "landscape" as a concept than has Venice. In a city where the land and gardens are reclaimed from a lagoon environment whose ecology is in jeopardy today, they are the very basis of life, dwelling, and culture. This book develops a typology of gardens distinguished by their predominantly small scale, all of which work with essential dimensions of landscape architecture: private and public space, usefulness and beauty, and open space in a densely built environment that is permeated with history.

From nearly one hundred city gardens, squares, and courtyards, public parks and temporary gardens, this book identifies garden layout and design elements that involve both material factors – spatial and design-related features – as well as the social circumstances of their use.

The areas presented include the Arsenale, where the Paradise Garden was created for the 2008 Biennale by Gustafson Porter, and the giardini and public gardens that – since their creation two hundred years ago – have served as a laboratory for making Venice into a modern city with a strong appeal to the "natural"

As a complex entity, an interesting building always has an interesting epic, a story that is embedded in the organisation of matter. A specific building epic, that of the Yokohama International Port terminal, is described in this book, the first in the series of Verb monographs. The book is structured as a replica of architecture design team's unique process, one where every member is in charge of an entire design package. This editorial structure has two fundamental intentions: first, to depict the design development process as the growth of ideas from rather specific material domains; second, to rediscover the linearity of the ordering system of construction documents. As an experiment falling outside of the typical architecture publication, we have chosen to exlude critical texts (theorisation on the work) in favor of a description of the set of decisions that made various matters evolve into a building. As a complex entity, an interesting building always has an interesting epic, a story that is embedded in the organisation of matter. The new realities of the 21st century have converted the cities into spaces for exchange: authentic platforms from where one can image the future. Madrid presents a context of social diversity and urban spaces everyday more heterogeneous, a metropolis with a diffused identity, at the same time a city of surprising contrasts.

Tokyo constitutes the most populated metropolitan area on the planet, it houses 33 million inhabitants.

It is also, possibly, the megalopolis with the highest proportion of recent architecture, what is a result of two significant events: The earthquake of 1923 and the bombardments of World War II.

The economic development that took place after the war gave rise to a modern city that stands out on account of its complex infrastructures. In no other city are the boundaries between inside and outside, public and private, up and down as blurred as in Tokyo; this lack of frontiers has shaped an urban setting without parallel which is reflected equally by the most state-of-the-art skyscraper and the most intimate store. This amalgam of architectural typologies has established itself as a reference point for designers from all over the world.

Projects are listed in alphabetical order to the architects and designers, presented in a very clear layout. Plans show the layouts of the buildings and single rooms.

Today Tokyo is the largest city in the world. The image of the city, notwithstanding the widespread globalisation process, is very different to what we are accustomed to in Europe, America and also in other Asian countries. The visual and cultural shock is strong: it appears extremely vast, uncontrollable, indecipherable, incommunicable, and chaotic.
Tokyo is one of the few global cities, and, like London, New York and perhaps one or two others, is part of a real trans-national system. It is an extraordinary capital of contemporary architecture and, at the same time, constitutes an exceptional urban phenomenon that is impossible not to study with great interest. More importantly is the fact that, behind an apparently abstract debate, the city poses a substantial problem: does it represent the final decay of the Western city or rather is it something completely different, a city with its own deep-rooted historical diversity and specific cultural independence that has not been substantially modified by the powerful and recent hybridisation with the West? And also, does the city interest us for these reasons or rather because it is/appears to be the city which – not being a part of the Eastern tradition – has, more than any other place, embraced the challenge of the new millennium and projected itself into the future, spurring rapid change with the energy, recklessness and aggression that is possible only in a place that has never been part of a tradition, to the point that it has substantiated a new symbolic form in the urban phenomenology of the twenty-first century?

This superb volume takes the reader behind the fabulous facades of Venice to explore the greatest achievements of contemporary Venetian interior design and decoration. The residential interiors included here range from fabric designer Mirella Spinella’s house, full of Asian influences and the blue-and-white harmonies of the Palazzo Pisani Rubelli, to the cutting-edge geometrics of London-based architect Michael Carapetian and the home of DJ Spiller, who combines high-tech electronics with frescoed ceilings and rocaille wood paneling in an ancient noble mansion.

Featuring a lively anecdotal text and stunning color photographs of private interiors otherwise not open to the public, this beautifully illustrated volume is essential for anyone who has fantasized about living in one of the most romantic cities in Europe. This is an enchanting volume for browsers, armchair tourists, and anyone interested in interior design.
