In England, gardening and garden-visiting are national obsessions. More than 80 years ago, the National Gardens Scheme (NGS) was founded with the aim of raising money for charity by opening gardens of quality and interest to the public. In the first year, some 600 gardens were opened. Today, over 3800 gardens – many of them privately owned and opened for just a few days each year – are listed in The Yellow Book, the annual guide published by the NGS.

The Gardens of England gives you the opportunity to enjoy 50 of the country’s greatest garden gems from the comfort of your armchair. Each of the five chapters is written by a different leading gardens expert, and surveys 10 gardens opened as part of the NGS during a particular period. George Plumptre, Chief Executive of the NGS, provides an engaging introduction on garden-visiting, and 12 well-known gardeners offer a personal account of their favourite NGS garden. Featuring established and new gardens of all styles, this is a book that no lover of the English garden should be without

_Showcases 50 of the best gardens of the National Gardens Scheme from its beginnings in 1927 to the present day
_Features a wide range of garden styles, and both private and public gardens
_A beautiful book for garden lovers everywhere, and for anyone interested in garden history

The garden - a place for refined pleasure and spiritual relaxation - has its roots in ancient China. Western travelers from Marco Polo onward marveled at the intricacy, the elaborate buildings, the subtle design, and the assured use of plants, water, and natural materials in Chinese landscapes. The Great Gardens of China shows, through stunning original photography and cogent text, both the visual splendors of China’s finest gardens and explains their ideas and techniques in accessible terms. Now every gardener, architect, or designer can understand China’s garden heritage and be inspired to use it to dramatic effect.

Beginning with an introduction to Chinese beliefs and the historical development of garden design, this book discusses the basic aesthetics and landscaping elements - architecture, rock stacking, waterscapes, plants, borders, and scenic routes - used in Chinese garden design. The author, an expert in the history and theory of Chinese and international gardens, also describes specific gardens, from famed world cultural heritage sites like the Summer Palace in Beijing and the gardens of Suzhou - Lion Grove, Humble Administrator’s, Lingering, and Master-of-Nets Gardens - to the lesser known. The Great Gardens of China serves as a compendium - in text and illustration - of all facets of the Chinese garden.

Practising from the turn of the twentieth century to the beginning of the Second World War, Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott exerted a profound influence on English Arts and Crafts architecture and design as well as on the nascent modernist movement.

As a leader of the Arts and Crafts movement in Britain, Baillie Scott adhered to the philosophy that good design should be made available to everyone and should extend from the planning of towns to the creation of dishes and doorknobs. Baillie Scott maintained a characteristically English dedication to the domestic landscape, designing houses and gardens whose exterior forms and interior details were rooted in a romantic vision of vernacular construction and craftsmanship. But his spatial planning signalled a revolution in the organization of interior space, with the development of the open plan - and the introduction of the demotic, modern living room - around the same time that Frank Lloyd Wright was engaging in similar experiments across the Atlantic.

Photographer Ian Macdonald-Smith has captured thirty of the most characteristically innovative and charming extant houses designed by Baillie Scott, as well as their delightful gardens, in spectacular full-colour photographs taken for this book that expresses the vibrant craftsmanship and prescient planning of this early-twentieth-century master.

Ecological swimming ponds are hip nowadays and they offer many advantages over traditional swimming pools: the water is pure, soft and without chlorine. You can swim between the water plants and the pond can be perfectly integrated in the garden.

Jean Vanhoof, an authority when it comes to swimming ponds, went looking for the 20 most prestigious ponds in Europe and explains here how the different systems work.

More popular than ever, gardening is going green with increased interest in environmentally friendly methods.

It seems that almost everyone who has access to outside space, however small or large, wants to make the most of it. Interest in growing plants in ecologically sensitive ways that support pollinators, butterflies, birds, and other wildlife is a very strong strand in the new consciousness of garden-making. It goes hand in hand with organic principles that shun the use of short-term, quick-fix chemical solutions that have an overall damaging effect on soil and the environment.

As the gardens in this book demonstrate, there need be no loss of visual impact or creativity when taking environmental concerns into account. With examples from all over the world, the gardens showcased here serve diverse needs--from twenty-first-century public green spaces to modern cottage gardens and from large country gardens to intimate city courtyards--across a wide range of climates and soils. They have been created with elegance and style, alongside their makers' efforts to work with, rather than against, nature and support the complex web of life that so frequently struggles to coexist with human habitation or agriculture.

Interspersed throughout are illustrated essays outlining relevant topics, including: supporting wildlife; the challenges of seaside gardening; incorporating seeds and fruit; grasses, meadows, and prairie plantings; coping with heat and drought; and the important role of trees.

Featuring more than thirty gardens from across the globe with photographs by leading garden photographers, including Richard Bloom, Andrea Jones, Marianne Majerus, Alessio Mei, Clive Nichols, and Ngoc Minh Ngo, the book showcases the beauty and visual impact produced by ecologically friendly garden design principles. As the world wakes up to the effects of climate change and the consequent strains on natural resources, today's garden makers are responding in creative way.

About the Author:

Kathryn Bradley-Hole is the author of Rizzoli's acclaimed English Gardens as well as the best-selling "Gardeners' World" Garden Lovers' Guide to Britain and Lost Gardens of England: From the Archives of Country Life. A fellow of the Linnean Society, she was for eighteen years the garden editor of the esteemed weekly magazine Country Life as well as the author of a regular column, Nature Notes. Her personal gardening interests focus on achieving visual harmony with the broader landscape and creating environments that assist wildlife.

Tim Richardson
ID: 10562
Видавництво: Frances Lincoln

In The New English Garden the leading garden writer Tim Richardson, author of The Arcadian Friends, discusses twenty-five significant English gardens made or remade over the past decade. Together these represent a coherent overview of what remains probably the most inventive garden culture in the world.

With the benefit of an international perspective, the author surveys a wide spectrum of gardens in styles ranging from the cutting-edge naturalistic planting design of the Sheffield School to the scientific imagery of Througham Court. While many of these gardens are challenging or thought-provoking, other reflect the sensuously romantic tradition of English planting design, which has also been moving ahead in interesting ways.

Through Tim Richardson’s incisive writing, The New English Garden presents all that is most interesting about garden-making in England in the twenty-first century and is beautifully illustrated by Andrew Lawson’s photography of some of England’s most famous gardens, from Prince Charles’s garden at Highgrove, Christopher Llyod’s garden at Great Dixter and Arabella Lennox-Boyd’s garden at Gresgarth right up to the Olympic Park in 2012.

A comprehensive overview of the contemporary English garden scene, by the dream team of Tim Richardson, most perceptive and insightful of contemporary writers on gardens, and renowned garden photographer Andrew Lawson.

The past ten to fifteen years has been an exceptionally rich period in English garden design, and for this book Tim Richardson has selected twenty-five gardens which have gone through an intense phase of creativity and innovation during this time span. The gardens chosen (most of which are open to the public), cover the wide range of styles flourishing in English garden design today and range from the Prince of Wales's garden at Highgrove, through Trentham Gardens (a 'Capability' Brown landscape imaginatively reworked for the twentieth-century by Piet Oudolf, Tom Stuart-Smith and Dominic Cole), Arabella Lennox-Boyd's own garden and 'laboratory for design ideas' at Gresgarth and Dan Pearson's Gardener's Cottage to Christopher Bradley-Hole's Modernist garden at Crockmore House, Kim Wilkie's astonishing Orpheus Landform, and Alasdair Ford's truly original garden of sculptures and poetic inferences at Plaz Metaxu.

The last twenty years have seen a lucky confluence of money and talent lavished on gardening, and the results are surprising, enchanting, and sometimes controversial. The range of possibilities suggested by these thirty-five gardens is extraordinary: from Jacques Wirtz's undulating beech hedges that recede mysteriously into the mist to Penelope Hobhouse's latest interpretation of the traditional English garden, to Martha Schwartz's Texas creation of red, yellow and pink painted garden rooms. These hidden masterworks of modern gardening are celebrated in words and stunning photographs in this beautiful book. Every page is an invitation to explore landscapes that have never before been seen by the public - and may never be seen again. British garden designers included are Christopher Lloyd, Monty Don, Sarah Raven and Dan Pearson.

Welcome to the Pleasures of the Outdoor Kitchen

Whether you live in a climate where outdoor living is possible for most of the year, or, as I do, in a place where spring and summer merge into a bare three-month-long window, cooking and dining outside has enormous appeal. Although lean-to "summer kitchens" used to be built outdoors to keep the house cool, these days we all want to cook and live outside for the sheer pleasure of it.

Living outside- and living well- is the reason for this book. The great suburban migration of the mid-20th century produced outdoor kitchens furnished with modest barbecues and wooden picnic tables, but our standards and aspirations have grown into a desire for outdoor kitchens and dining areas that match our homes in quality, style, performance, and attractiveness.

Manufacturers have taken note. These days, the equipment available for outdoor living includes restaurant-level high-BTU gas grills; outdoor refrigerators; sinks of all styles and sizes; task and ambient lighting; stone, tile, and cast-cement counters the equal of their interior kitchen cousins; and ovens up to the job of cooking everything from bread and pizza to a whole pig. Amenities for outdoor social spaces include portable fireplaces and heaters, outdoor furniture that rivals interior models for comfort and visual appeal, garden structures from gazebos to antique barns, and even carpets and sound systems designed for backyard use.

Confronted by all these possibilities, what is a homeowner to do? Where should you begin? How can you start planning, or researching, or even considering a budget? This book will answer all of your questions. We'll show you lots of great dream material and specific details, but we'll also tell you how to get from dream to reality.

We'll also show you lots of equipment choices, as well as offering information on materials and styles for everything from patio and deck flooring to counters and trellises. We'll give you sources for everything in the book, and websites for designers and manufacturers. But most of all, especially in Chapter 1, we'll give you a map for the design process, showing you how to think through a complete plan.

Imagine the sun on your skin and a breeze in your hair...as you put a meal in the oven! For years we've dreamed up ways to bring the outdoors into our homes. Now here is the know-how to bring the indoors out. And the best news? You can create a glorious al fresco kitchen no matter how limited your "good weather" season, yard size or budget.

First you'll be inspired by beautiful outdoor kitchen photos and profiles. Then this unique new guide will help you create your own, with expert advice on everything from floors to shelter tops and stoves to sinks.

  • Guidance every step of the way for planning an outdoor kitchen ideally suited to your site, style, needs, finances. (Setup, built in, Modest, or forgive the pun - all out. We'll help you make the right choices right from the start.)
  • 300 full-color photos show you outdoor kitchens all over the country, from "Italy In Texas" to "Urban Oasis." (See what's cooking in some celebrity chef backyards along the way.)
  • Your exciting new options in equipment and materials like task and ambient lighting, outdoor refrigerators, ovens of all sizes, counters to rival the finest indoor models (Remember when outdoor cooking was pretty much limited to Dad's trusty grill and a redwood picnic table? No more!)
  • A complete resource list with contact information for designers and suppliers
  • Wonderful "extras" to enhance your outdoor living area - portable fireplaces, heaters, even backyard sound systems

"An outdoor kitchen invites you to revel in the pleasures of the natural world." - Deborah Krasner

A one-of-a-kind book with all you need to spark your imagination and fire up plans for your own outdoor kitchen
