Affordable housing is an enduring political challenge. Cities have endeavoured to set international standards for this important field of architecture since the 1920s. Planners must work within a socially motivated tradition to find exemplary solutions both at the political and architectural level. This building catalogue documents over 130 residential buildings dedicated to affordable housing. It presents floor plans, large photos, key data, and clear diagrams, providing a comprehensive overview of the solutions being tested today.

The publication is rounded off with ten affordable housing concepts that were designed as part of the Housing for All competition, organised by the Frankfurt Department of Planning and Housing, the Deutsches Architekturmuseum, and ABG Frankfurt Holding. Renowned architecture practices based in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and France were invited to submit design concepts for building sites in the Hilgenfeld area of Frankfurt. These concepts will reignite the contemporary discourse on affordable housing – in Frankfurt and beyond.

Communal living, intergenerational living, living for families, handicap-accessible living, living and working, living and leisure time – the wide variety of current demands is shaping future concepts in housing, which will have to do justice to the needs of our increasingly multilayered society. The examples in this new volume in the In Detail series are correspondingly diverse. Organized thematically, In Detail: Integrated Housing highlights a variety of well-defined topics, such as handicap-accessibility and flexibility of use, and presents them together with explanatory technical articles and examples of realized projects. In closing, it provides addresses of information centers and associations as well as sources of additional information.

Featuring 95 of the most significant buildings of the early twenty-first century, this book includes works by such eminent architects as Renzo Piano, Norman Foster, OMA and Frank Gehry, as well as newer names, such as Jamie Fobert and Sou Fujimoto. The buildings are organized by planning strategy and are divided into eight chapters, each with an informative introduction that ties the buildings back to iconic examples from the twentieth century. For each building there are numerous, accurate scale plans showing a combination of floor plans, elevations and sections as appropriate, all specially redrawn for this book and based on the most up-to-date information and sources. For each of the buildings there is a concise text discussing the organizational strategy and the significant architectural features of the buildings anatomy, together with colour images. The quality and number of the line drawings, together with the authoritative text and images, allow all the buildings to be understood in detail.
