The "home away from home" must be flexible and agile, prepared to accommodate any number of uses at any given time. Here, an international sampling of resort houses shows the very best solutions in the field: programs which are at once conducive to the feeling of "getting away from it all", while discretely covering the comforts and necessities (a second office, for example) that inevitably arise. A well-rounded presentation has been guaranteed by the inclusion of construction details, listings of materials and finishes (both inside and out), floor plans and sketches. All documentation has been provided by the designing studios, who thereby contribute their own proven expertise in this specialized field of architecture.

Filled with advice, tips, strategies, and problem-solving techniques from some of the leading figures in golf architecture, Routing the Golf Course provides unique insight into the most essential phase of designing a golf course. Coverage includes material on all aspects of planning a golf course such as site evaluation; environmental conditions; programming; and financial, psychological, and strategic game considerations. This nuts-and-bolts information is balanced with anecdotal, real-life experiences from guest essayists such as land planner Gil Martinez, environmental psychologist Dr. Edward Sadalla, and golf course architect Arthur Jack Snyder. Also featured is an interview with longtime professional golfer and broadcaster Peter Oosterhuis, who also provides the foreword.
This book is divided into four key parts. "The Opening" begins with a brief history of routing, including the influence of St. Andrews, and continues with insightful examinations of the components that make up different courses. "Making the Turn" contains chapters on essential routing information such as the "rules" of routing, safety considerations, and methods for fitting holes together. "The Heart of the Course" explores the hands-on process of creating routing plans and is enhanced with words of wisdom from renowned golf course architects Pete Dye, Jay Morrish, Dr. Michael Hurdzon, and many others. In the final section, "The Finish," coverage includes the use of GIS in routing, presenting routing plans, and design changes that may lie ahead for golf courses. A unique look at the Cypress Point Club rounds out the reading.

This book features Japanese inns, or ryokan, both old and new-from inns with a history dating back a thousand years to modern inns with the latest facilities that nonetheless capture the spirit of old Japan. Each of the properties has been handpicked by the authors for their strong design aesthetic, commitment to service and purity of their spring waters. The photographs showcase the resorts at their best, and accurately express the unique architectural design of each ryokan.
Each chapter begins by introducing the area surrounding the inns and their spas, or onsen, and provides a background of its local history, culture and traditions, as well as the natural environment. The text provides information on the design and development of each ryokan, and descriptions of the owners and their clientele. For those planning a visit to an onsen, this book provides contact details and information on the number of rooms, type of facilities and food, as well as vital information on travel and booking procedures and whether English is spoken. For those fascinated by Japanese culture and design, this book is an absolute delight.
In recent years, Saint-Tropez, a heavenly spot on the French Côte d’Azur, has evolved into one of the most sophisticated holiday destinations for the Jet set. Initially, under the impetus of the many celebrities and wealthy citizens who lived there during the summer months, many luxurious holiday homes were built in a Provencal or Italian-inspired style in Saint-Tropez. Lately, this has changed: under the influence of local architects but also of the cosmopolitan population of the port town a resolutely contemporary design, both sober and timeless, pure and modern was resolutely chosen.
The renowned interior designer Sandra Cerfontaine, the creator of Alessandra Home Interiors in Saint-Tropez, introduces us to the exciting world of contemporary design in her home town: exclusive, never-before photographed homes that bathe in a contemporary and timeless atmosphere. A unique source of inspiration for anyone wanting to settle on the Côte d’Azur. With an introduction by Daniel Hechter, the celebrated French couturier, who also guides us first through his own home in Saint-Tropez.
Sand and Golf: How Terrain Shapes the Game explores what makes golf, and golf course architecture, so special on sandy terrain. Golf was born on sandy ground and the features of the game are a direct product of that terrain. Fairways and greens were derived from the naturally occurring areas of short grass found among the coastal dunes of Scotland. The original sand traps were areas of bare sand that can be found scattered throughout any dune landscape. As the game spread beyond the coastal dunes it took these features with it, and while they have been incorporated into a variety of landscapes they have always fit best on sandy ground. For this reason each major expansion in golf has begun with new courses on sandy ground. Even the best courses of the modern era are products of sandy terrain. The reason golf works so well on sandy ground is that it quite literally belongs there.
This book explores the unique features of sandy ground that make it so suitable for golf, studying the similarities and differences among sandy courses in a wide variety of environments. The courses of Melbourne’s Sandbelt may not bear much resemblance to the fantastic sandy courses of America’s Great Plains, but they actually have a great deal in common. The firm turf that is a product of free draining soils, rugged bunkers carved directly into the sandy soils, and a style of play suited to firm, often windy sites. Golf on sandy sites is a game played as much along the ground as through the air, and creative shotmaking is required to deal with the challenges of sandy terrain. The creativity required to succeed when golfing on sandy ground is a big part of the enduring popularity of these courses and the reason why people travel around the world to seek them out.
Golf on sandy terrain is something special because golf itself is a product of that terrain. Sand and Golf looks at all aspects of the relationship between sand and golf, from golf’s earliest days to the spread of the sport across the globe. Golf and golf course architecture on sandy sites is explored in every detail, using examples and illustrations from the best sandy courses in the world.

In the world today, the homogeny of most services and the low-cost tag applied to nearly any entity ends up creating a self-defensive reaction in those still searching for something specific, the particular in the regular. It therefore means finding that distinctiveness which makes the experience felt in the hotels presented here fly far beyond a simple classification by number, area or volume. The largest hotel project presented in this volume reaches no higher than 104 guestrooms.
