One of art history’s previously overlooked treasures — the vibrant ceramic tiles of Syria and especially Damascus — are the subject of this fascinating study by a leading Islamic art expert.

The architectural ceramic decoration is one of the most celebrated manifestations of the arts of Islam. Spanning a period from the 13th to the 20th century, the tiles featured in this book exhibit a rich range of influences from Persia, Turkey, China and even Europe. A renowned specialist in the fields of Islamic and Indian art, Arthur Millner explores the historical context that allowed the uniquely creative achievement of Syrian craftsmen to flourish, and why tiles from this region are less restricted in artistic expression than those from better-known centers of production. The complex and interconnected nature of tile designs, techniques and color palettes is explored, highlighting what is distinctive about Damascus ceramics and how they relate to tiles produced in other parts of the Islamic world. Finally, the author traces the journey made by many of these tiles to the West, embellishing the interiors of wealthy clients as Islamic art became both fashionable and influential in late 19th-century art and design.

About the Author:

Arthur Millner is a consultant and independent scholar in the field of Indian and Islamic art. He lectures at the London School of Oriental and African Studies, the V&A Museum, the Royal Asiatic Society and the Oriental Rug and Textile Society. He is the author of Indian Tiles (Prestel, 2021).

David Ragg is a third generation florist, following in the footsteps of his mother and grandmother. Surrounded by flowers from a very young age, he understands the simple beauty of one of nature's most wonderful creations, the flower. His philosophy and view on floral design are uncomplicated. David Thulstrup’s award-winning international and multi-disciplinary practice includes everything from residential architecture to interiors for restaurants, stores, and hotels, as well as designs for furniture and lighting.  More than 250 specially commissioned photographs, floor plans, architectural drawings, mood boards, process photographs, and four in-depth case studies, including his design for the interior and furniture for the new Noma restaurant in Copenhagen, illustrate more than 20 architectural and interiors projects, as well as 16 designs for furniture. This book traces Thulstrup’s life and influences from his childhood and education in Denmark, up to the present day, demonstrating his unique approach to design.

About the Authors:

Having gained extensive experience working for Jean Nouvel in Paris and Peter Marino in New York, David Thulstrup founded his own practice in 2009, grounded on enduring Scandinavian values of honesty and humanism with a particular emphasis on materiality. Describing his style as ‘modern simplicity’, Thulstrup creates pared-back designs that feel current but stand the test of time.

Sophie Lovell was born in London and studied Biology at Sussex University before going on to study Design at Chelsea College of Art & Design. She moved to her current home, Berlin, in 1994. Sophie has worked on and with numerous publications both digital and analogue in the fields of art, architecture and design. She is the former editor-in-chief of uncube magazine, for example, and the Germany Editor of Wallpaper* magazine from 2000 to 2022. She has written and edited a number of books on design and architecture, including Dieter Rams: As Little Design as Possible, and is also co-editor of The Common Table, a digital platform for food futures and systemic change that she founded together with her daughter Orlando Lovell as studio_lovell.

From internationally acclaimed photographer Deborah Turbeville comes the first book on her highly influential visionary avant-garde fashion photography. The presentation includes Turbeville's most famous photographs, among them the controversial Bathhouse series of 1975 for American Vogue with disturbingly isolated figures and her Woman in the Woods series of 1977 for Italian Vogue showing psychologically charged emotions, along with her numerous photography campaigns for labels like Sonia Rykiel, Valentino, Yamamoto, Ungaro, and Commes des Garçons, as well as commissions for Chanel and work that has never been seen before. Her most current project for Casa Vogue--Italian nobility dressed in special couture outfits--evokes Turbeville's vision of everlasting beauty.

About the Author

Deborah Turbeville, a fashion editor turned photographer, was a fashion editor for Mademoiselle in 1966. A portfolio of some very stylized photographs she did for Saks Fifth Avenue was her first big breakthrough into the fashion photography world. Subsequently, her work first appeared in Vogue in the 1970s. Since then she has been a dominant figure in contemporary photography. Turbeville has authored many books, including Unseen Versailles, Wallflower, Studio St. Petersburg, Past Imperfect 1978-1997, and Casa No Name. Her work continues to be exhibited around the world and is published regularly in many international magazines.
