The history of graphic design is a very underpublished subject for such a widely studied discipline. Now Stephen Eskilson provides a scholarly and accessible account of the field from Gutenberg to today. His approach is distinctive in that, for the first time, the subject is fully discussed in the light of prevailing political, social, military and economic conditions, nationalism, and gender.

Clearly designed and easy-to-follow, the book tells the story chronologically with key topics developed in more than one chapter by way of cultural comparison. It covers a host of different materials: book, journal, magazine and album covers; photographs, prints, posters, logos and websites. Featured designers include Albers, Benton, Brody, Earls, Glaser, Morris, Rodchenko, Sagmeister, Scher and Toulouse-Lautrec. Logo designers Bass, Chermayeff & Geismar and Rand receive substantial coverage. Pioneering typographers range from Garamond, Caslon and Morison to Hoefler, Licko and Carter.

Prepress is a broad subject with lots of technical information that can be boring at times so it's a definite bonus when a book comes along that can elegantly describe the banal intricacies of halftone patterns and why they matter to you. This book has it all including sections covering fonts, printer types, digital bits, image resolution, paper types and weights, book bindings and paper folds. Of particular note are the variety of examples images and graphics spread throughout the book to help illustrate the various technologies and processes of printing. The text itself is consistent in tone and quality although occasionally it switches from relatively basic topics like image resolution to more complex issues such as halftone versus stochastic screening. I would recommend this book as a semi-pro level book and not necessarily a "prepress for dummies" tutorial.

A good designer, like a good chef, is aware not only of how each ingredient is similar or different, but also which delivers one message in contrast to another, which will combine to create experiences that are harmonious or jarring, financial, medical, or industrial.

By comparing the designer to a chef, author Timothy Samara, walks readers through the ingredients, tools, and techniques it takes to create successful design recipes.

This book is broken into easy-to-follow sections, including basic design techniques, graphic ingredients, and projects recipes. The Graphic Ingredients section is categorized into four groups: Pictorial Staples, Chromatic Flavors, Typographic Confections, and Spatial Presentations. Once the basic design techniques and ingredients are established, the author demonstrates how to concoct delectable design recipes. Graphic Designer's Essential Reference is an inspirational resource that all graphic designers should keep by their workspace for handy reference.

From the kitsch cuteness of the ubiquitous Hello Kitty to the cult of manga and anime, Japanese design has long paved the way for the West to follow. Graphic Japan goes beyond this well-known territory to reveal the myriad styles of design produced in Japan today, from packaging to posters, typography to new media. Contemporary Japanese graphic design is a unique collision of traditional cultural influences and a focused thrust towards modernisation on global terms. No other country has found itself modernised so quickly while retaining such a distinct way of life, and the resulting graphic innovation enthralls the world. Divided into distinct sections, the book reflects the marriage of tradition and hyper-modernity that typifies Japanese design. Essays on today’s innovators are beautifully printed in a simple, elegant manner typical of traditional Japanese work, while visual matter is boldly, colourfully printed, reflecting the brash, global commerciality of much new material.
