Anton Pössenbacher (1842–1920), cabinet-maker to the Bavarian court in Munich, was head of one of the largest late 19th-century German makers of luxury furnishings. His furniture, especially those for King Ludwig II of Bavaria (1871–1886), represent German Historicism at its zenith. Pössenbacher created almost all the furniture for the royal apartments at Linderhof, Herrenchiemsee and Neuschwanstein. Intricately carved and lavishly upholstered in gold brocade and dazzling embroidered pictures, these furnishings are highlights in the sumptuous interiors of Bavarian castles. Made to the specifications of an exacting monarch, these masterpieces of the cabinet-maker’s craft have lost nothing of their original fascination.

One of Pössenbacher's clients was King Charles I of Romania, for whom he designed an elegant palace library in Bucharest (1887). Pössenbacher’s clients also included industrialists, merchants and landed gentry, whose town houses and manors he provided with entire rooms.

The present book introduces the full range of furniture by Anton Pössenbacher viewed in their historical context. Numerous new photographs of the interior decoration of the Bavarian royal castles and hitherto unpublished designs for private commissions as well as a scholarly catalogue which also incorporates all relevant invoices from the ledgers kept by the cabinet of Ludwig II make this a standard work on the luxury furniture of Historicism.

Hester van Overbeek is a passionate crafter, who has always had a keen interest in interior design — even when she was a child, she drew little interior plans for her bedroom. When she moved to England’s southeast coast and had the opportunity to redecorate a beach house, her passion for craft and DIY was rekindled and the website www.hestershandmadehome.com was born. The website features craft tutorial videos and interior tips, and Hester’s work is often found in magazines such as "Reloved." She has also been featured in "Ikea Magazine" and the Dutch magazine "Libelle." As well as maintaining her website, Hester also works as a hair and makeup artist. Born in the Netherlands, Hester has lived in the UK for the past ten years.

About the Author:

Gloria Cortina was born and raised in Mexico City and studied at Parsons School of Design in New York. After a period of working with architect David Ling in New York, she returned to Mexico to work for the architect Ricardo Legorreta, later joining forces with others to launch the avant-garde firm A5 Arquitectura. In 2009 she established her own studio. Sean Kelly is a British, New York-based gallerist, contemporary art dealer, and owner of the Sean Kelly Gallery, New York. Jay Merrick is an architecture critic of The Independent and a regular essayist for the Architects Journal. He also contributes to leading magazines such as Blueprint, ArtReview and the periodical London Magazine.

In the early 1900s, American entrepreneur Marshall Burns Lloyd invented a particular type of loom that was able to weave twisted paper, reinforced with steel, into a woven fabric that could be used to make furniture. Today, as a traditional manufacturer, Lloyd Loom continues to make furniture in the same way they did eighty-five years ago. They still use the same loom, the same twisted paper and produce many of the traditional chair designs. They supply furniture to boutique hotels, architects, interior designers and cruise liners - to name but a few.
