This is the first book devoted exclusively to rings considered by theme rather than by date – though the author, a world expert, brings her rich historical and literary knowledge to the subject.

She considers …

Signets
Rings associated with love, marriage and friendship
Devotional, protective and ecclesiastical rings
Memento mori and memorial rings
Rings associated with famous people and great events
Decorative rings
Diamond rings
Rings as accessories

while making us delight in them as works of art, and bringing their context alive through paintings, drawings, and vivid quotations.

Rings of all periods are included – from ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome through the Middle Ages and Renaissance up to the 20th century. The rings are drawn not only from great museums but from private collections, preeminently that of the noted gem dealer and art patron Benjamin Zucker.

About the Author:

Diana Scarisbrick has written extensively on jewellery, in books, exhibition catalogues and journals internationally. Rings have always been a particular interest.

The Art of David Webb

The Art of David Webb.

About the Author:

Nicole Ringgold is a silversmith living in Winthrop, Washington, located in the North Cascade mountains. Her art is inspired by her natural surroundings: plants she encounters while hiking through the mountains, the shapes of rocks she plucks from a river, a sound, glimpse, or smell. Her botanical jewelry is hand fabricated, starting with silver sheets and wire, with every piece sawed, soldered, filed, textured, formed, oxidized, and polished. Her intention is to recreate natural forms in silver with as much detail as possible, with the goal of making the metal appear alive. She teaches silversmithing workshops in her home studio and around the world. For more about Nicole’s work, workshops, and tutorials, visit nicoleringgold.com and @ringgoldnicole on Instagram.

Understanding Jewellery, by authors David Bennett and Daniela Mascetti, is often described as the must-have jewellery book of our time – a ‘Bible’ in the jewellery trade. First published in 1989, it has remained in print ever since, amassing a loyal following of devotees who admire its detailed information and stunning imagery.

In this new work, Bennett and Mascetti have taken the original concept of Understanding Jewellery a stage further. The book is an encyclopedic history of the various forms, techniques and materials employed by the companies and individuals who defined jewellery in the 20th century.

Most significantly, this book includes a new set of photographs, which make Understanding Jewellery: The Twentieth Century one of the most dazzling, absorbing and varied collections of jewellery images ever assembled in a book. This large format hardback volume is a perfect gift for all lovers of jewellery and the definitive guide for those who desire a deeper understanding of the subject.

Costume jewellery is commonly understood to mean fashionable yet affordable adornments made from non-precious material. Originating in in mid-1700s France with the rise of the bourgeoise, the earliest ‘costume jewellery’ mimicked fine jewellery styles. Since then, costume jewellery has always been evolving. From Victorian sentimentalism to the mass-produced ornaments available today, costume jewellery has developed into an artform in its own right. An encyclopaedic study of its history is long overdue. Flush with expert information, identification tips and historical anecdotes, Adorning Fashion explores the development of costume jewellery across the past four centuries. The styles of each era – Victorian, Edwardian, Arts & Crafts, Jugenstil, Art Nouveau, and each decade of the twentieth century – are given individual attention. Production methods are also explained in depth. Alloys and gilded electroplating can mimic silver and gold, while the refraction index of treated glass can, to the untrained eye, be mistaken for diamond.

Adorning Fashion discusses the contributions of a remarkable roster of designers and innovators, including Kokichi Mikimoto, Arthur L. Liberty, Carlo Giuliano, René Lalique, Elizabeth Bonté, the Castellani brothers, Jean Fouquet, Jean Després, Fulco di Verdura, Jean Schlumberger, Salvador Dalí, Miriam Haskell, Lina Baretti, Countess Cissy Zoltowska, Line Vautrin, Kenneth Jay Lane, Francisco Rebajes, Diane Love, Christian Dior, Balenciaga, Chanel, Van Cleef & Arpels, Paco Rabanne, Yves Saint Laurent, Napier, Haskell, Trifari, Brania, Bulgari, Versace and more.

- Definitive, comprehensive overview of costume jewellery
- Follows the evolution of costume jewellery from bourgeois France to the present day
- Lavishly illustrated reference book - a must-buy for jewellery enthusiasts and fashion historians
- Includes a remarkable range of designers including Lalique, Fouquet, Dior, Balenciaga, Versace and many more

The definitive catalogue of an unparalleled collection of Indian jewelry and luxury objects made at the height of the Mughal empire and the Deccan sultanates.

This is the definitive catalogue of an unparalleled collection of Indian jewelry and jewelled luxury objects made at the height of the Mughal empire and Deccan sultanates in the 16th and 17th centuries. The collection, widely regarded as one of the finest in the world, was assembled by Sheikh Nasser and Sheikha Hussa al-Sabah for The al-Sabah Collection, Kuwait, and reveals the beauty, sophistication and diversity of Indian jewelled arts.

The Indian subcontinent is naturally rich in gems. From ancient times master jewellers developed a wide array of unique techniques and made it home to the most sophisticated jewels on earth. Exotic birds and animals, flowers, trees and mythological scenes rendered in precious gemstones, gold and enamel demonstrate these artists’ prodigious imagination and skill. They produced not only an unmatched range of jewelry to adorn the body but also ritual and household items of astonishing refinement and luxury, as well as extravagantly large engraved gemstones to serve as symbols of their princely patrons’ royal power – including a spinel of nearly 250 carats believed to be the legendary Timur Ruby.

This volume includes not only the finest and most valuable pieces in the collection – some familiar to connoisseurs, others published here for the first time – but also many previously unknown types that extend our understanding of artistic output in the region. With specially commissioned photography giving unprecedented new views of more than 300 jewelled objects, this is a publication of historic importance and beauty, for all lovers of jewelry, the arts of India and of the Islamic world.

Salam Kaoukji is curator and collection manager of The al-Sabah Collection, Kuwait, and an editor of Thames & Hudson’s long-running and acclaimed series of catalogues. The first large-format book on AMBUSH®, one of the most influential ready-to-wear and jewelry brands to come out of Japan in the last two decades. Offering a deep dive into the brand’s teeming archive, this intuitively engineered monograph is a sleek essential for lovers of fashion, as well as streetwear enthusiasts and tech-driven lifestyle culture.

Founded in Tokyo in 2008, AMBUSH® first gained notoriety for creating the “POW!®” line of rings and chains, a design heavily indebted to American pop-art and manga which took the world of hip-hop by storm. A multi-disciplinary fashion, jewelry and design collective, AMBUSH® is the brainchild of Korean-American designer YOON and Korean-Japanese music producer VERBAL.

Championed from the very outset by the likes of Pharrell, NIGO® and Colette, YOON’s jewelry designs often include bold motifs as seen in collections drawn from everyday objects such as office stationery, safety pins, and disposable lighters. With apparel as a canvas to complete the aesthetic YOON envisioned, AMBUSH® evolved into designing unisex ready-to-wear collections. Growing into a full fashion line that often draws  inspiration from subcultures and countercultures, AMBUSH® grew a devoted following well beyond Tokyo. The brand’s uniquely crafted parts form an idiosyncratic style that led to commissions and collaborations with an illustrious list that includes Louis Vuitton (Kim Jones), sacai, UNDERCOVER, Off-White, Moët & Chandon, Bvlgari, Nike, CONVERSE, Rimowa, and GENTLE MONSTER.

About the Authors:
