66 duotone photographs
This text offers a new perspective on New York, the American metropolis. Using a vintage panoramic camera tilted at an angle of 90 degrees, Hamann spent nearly five years setting up shot after shot, often finding himself balanced precariously out on a window ledge, waiting for the perfect light conditions. His stark black and white compositions lend the photographs a dramatic, often dreamlike quality, and offer unique interpretations of some of the world's most recognizable cityscapes.

Serge Ramelli’s impressive outlook on the storied east coast metropolis now available for a special price in a smaller format

Black-and-white urban photography has a unique effect: It can lend a historical feel or bring out perspectives and surfaces in a special way. Serge Ramelli’s New York photos do both — and much more. With his film director’s eye, he searches out locations using parameters that evoke a specific atmosphere and build tension. The New York skyline or typical New York street scenes are stylized into a stage — but a stage where nothing is required to happen. Their impressiveness is so heightened that a movie automatically plays in the viewer’s head. With New York boasting so much history and evocativeness, nothing more is needed. Although he is similar to Ansel Adams in technique and expression, Serge Ramelli is a contemporary photographer in every sense of the word, constantly experimenting with new technical options.

After Paris, New York was Serge Ramelli’s choice of the second instalment for his photographic diptych of contemporary cityscapes, and it’s certainly no coincidence that the photographer selected this super-sized city as the subject of his second book. How could he fail — he, the self-taught photographer — to pay homage to this, the city of the willing, the self-made men, and the resourceful? And how could this great lover of cinema have chosen any other backdrop or any other film location than that of the Big Apple, made immortal by more than a century of legendary cinematography? An eager lover of dramatic imagery, Serge Ramelli is constantly on the lookout for spectacular lighting, whether natural or artificial and with its gigantic advertising and garish boards, New York is an almost perfect city for such a hunt.

From acclaimed animal photographer Elke Vogelsang comes a charming, personal collection of portraits of her three dogs-Noodles, Scout, and Ioli.

Nice Nosing You presents Elke's expressive portraits of her much-loved dogs; a collection compiled over two years in what became a personal and touching project for Elke and her husband, Carsten. One year on Christmas Day, Elke's dogs suddenly started barking outside the bathroom door. Investigating the commotion, Elke discovered Carsten collapsed in the bathroom. He had suffered a major brain haemorrhage and the dogs had in fact saved his life, discovering him at a crucial time.

The months immediately following were filled with much uncertainty and in an attempt to establish some sort of routine and find something to lift her husband's mood, Elke started taking photos of their dogs to show Carsten in the hospital. As Carsten slowly recovered, Elke's project became an obsession. Gathered here in a stunning collection, Elke's photographs are captioned with inspiring quotes, illustrating the personal encouragement she and her husband found in these intimate and playful images. Praised by The Huffington Post-"Elke Vogelsang has taken dog portraits to a new level"-this is truly a collection to treasure.

Nick Brandt

In A Shadow Falls, which features fifty-eight recent images in stunning, oversized tritone plates, Nick Brandt continues his ambitious and ongoing photographic project to memorialize the vanishing natural grandeur of East Africa. Brandt’s wide-screen panoramas of animals and landscapes capture an epic vision of Africa that has not been seen before. His iconic portraits of its majestic animals are filled with an empathy usually reserved for human subjects.

From the opening images in A Shadow Falls, of a verdant world filled with multitudes of animals, to the closing images of small bands of creatures moving across a parched, dusty earth, Brandt portrays a mythic Africa struggling against tragic forces. In years to come, we will look back at these powerful photographs and wonder why humanity did not do more to preserve this rare corner of earthly paradise.

About the author:

Nick Brandt's first book, On This Earth, is one of the most popular photography books of this decade.

Across the Ravaged Land is the third and final volume in Nick Brandt’s trilogy of books documenting the disappearing animals of eastern Africa. The book offers a darker vision of this world, still filled with a stunning beauty but now tragically tainted and fast disappearing at the hands of man.

In addition to a range of starkly powerful animal portraits, Brandt introduces some new themes, as humans make an appearance for the first time. He also contributes two essays summing up his photographic odyssey, which has taken more than a decade of intensive work to complete.

About the Author:

Nick Brandt (b.1964) is an English-born, US-based photographer whose themes always relate to the disappearing natural world. He is the co-founder of the Big Life Foundation, in Kenya, where all of these photographs were shot.

Focusing on of the world's last great populations of large mammals; elephants, giraffes, lions, gorillas and their kin, he created two of the new century's most influential photographic books: On This Earth (2005) and A Shadow Falls (2009). His iconic portraits of these majestic animals express and empathy usually reserved for human subjects. A testament to the bookmaker's craft, it is the first volume on Brandt's work to capture the superb quality of his remarkable, large format prints, which are notable for their velvet blacks and tonal subtleties. Brandt is currently completing the final volume of his trilogy documenting the fate of the great animals of East Africa.

Art Ablaze. Pyrotechnics and pure self-expression at Burning Man

One hundred miles from the gambling town of Reno, in the wilderness of northern Nevada, lies a vast, hostile plain known as the Black Rock Desert. The region has been an empty and windswept dry lake bed for most of the past 10,000 years. Except, that is, for one brief week at the end of each summer, when a temporary city rises out of the barren clay.

This is the surreal and amazing site of Burning Man. Baked by the sun, and blinded by dust, the gathering acquires different meanings for different people: temporary community, spiritual adventure, performance stage, desert rave, social experiment. It’s also the incubator of some of the most remarkable site-specific outdoor art ever made: a mechanized fire-breathing octopus, a towering wooden temple 15 meters tall, and the eponymous Man himself — a skeletal sculpture set ablaze at the event’s conclusion.

In this updated edition with fresh images, writer and photographer NK Guy presents 16 years of Burning Man art. His dazzling images record these participatory, collective, intrinsically ephemeral installations and happenings in the desert, which exist for no clearer purpose than because someone wanted to express something. The result is testimony to a realm far beyond the ego, commerce, and power play of mainstream cultural output: it is one of the purest, uninhibited, expressive centers of our time.

With a foreword by temple designer and artist David Best and a futureword by Founding Board Member Marian Goodell.

The photographer:

NK Guy is a Canadian writer and photographer living in Britain. He is the author of The Lens: A Practical Guide for the Creative Photographer and The Photographer’s Dictionary. He documented the art of Burning Man annually between 1998 and 2014.
