Lola Alvarez Bravo was Mexico’s first woman photographer, and her career is exceptional both for its remarkable range and for the compelling quality of her work. Approach­ing photography from multiple angles, she worked as a photojournalist, commercial photographer, and professional portraitist, while also creating intensely personal images of people, places, and things throughout her native Mexico. In addition, she played a vital role in the Mexican cultural scene, as an inspiring teacher of photography, as friend of innumerable artists and writers (many of whom she photographed), and as owner of a prestigious gallery that pre­sented the first solo show by her friend Frida Kahlo, the subject of some of Alvarez Bravo’s most powerful portraits.

Lola Alvarez Bravo moved to Mexico City from her hometown in Jalisco at age three, and Mexico City remained her home base for the rest of her long life - except for two years in Oaxaca with her then husband, Manuel Alvarez Bravo. She began making photographs, under his tutelage, in 1926 and continued photographing for the next sixty years. Although some of her photographs reflect Manuel’s influence - they shared the same cameras and often the same roll of film - Lola achieved her own aesthetic dur­ing the 1940s and ’50s, concentrating on two particularly vivid bodies of work: portraiture and street photography. In these engaging images she found a way to reveal a lyricism in the world around her, producing quiet reveries on life lived in the moment.

This is the first English-language book on Lola Alvarez Bravo to encompass the full range of her work, including some images never before published and several of her little-known photomontages. Eliza­beth Ferrer’s insightful text - based on far-ranging research, including interviews with the artist and her friends - captures the unique spirit of both the photographer and her extraordinary photographs.

LOLA ALVAREZ BRAVO (1903–1993) lived and worked in Mexico City. Her work is in numerous collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona, Tucson, where her archive is maintained. Her work is represented by Throckmorton Fine Art, New York, and Galería Juan Martín, Mexico City.

This portfolio contains a selection of the best and most poignant portraits by Steve McCurry, known and loved the world over for his beautiful and enduring images of the landscapes and cultures of South and Southeast Asia. The collection includes some iconic as well as previously unknown portraits of children, monks, pilgrims and travellers that McCurry has encountered on his journeys throughout Afghanistan, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), Pakistan and Tibet.

About the Author:

Steve McCurry (b.1950) launched his career as a photojournalist when, disguised in native garb, he crossed the Pakistan border into Afghanistan before the Russian invasion. His coverage won him the Robert Capa Gold Medal, which is awarded to photographers exhibiting exceptional courage and enterprise. Famous also for his work in Southeast Asia, his photographs are beautiful, uplifting and powerful. McCurry has worked for National Geographic magazine for many years and is a member of the prestigious Magnum agency. Exhibitions of his work have been held all over the world and his previous books include The Imperial Way (1985), Monsoon (1988) and Portraits (Phaidon, 1999).

Louise Brooks has become one of the most spectacular icons of early cinema. Her distinctive "bob" haircut looks as modern as they did when she first appeared in films in 1925. Louise Brooks was born on November 14, 1906 in Cherryvale, Kansas, and by eighteen had established herself as a dancer with the Ziegfeld Follies, and was receiving film offers from both MGM and Paramount.

In 1928, she starred in William Wellman's Beggars of Life. Meanwhile, she was mingling with the high and mighty of Hollywood, having a passionate affair with Charlie Chaplin, spending weekends at William Randolph Hearst's castle and captivating such men as William S. Paley, the founder of CBS. Her brief, yet spectacular role in Howard Hawks' A Girl in Every Port impressed G.W. Pabst, the German maestro who was seeking an actress for his upcoming production, Pandora's Box. He rejected Marlene Dietrich in favor of Brooks, who went to Berlin and made not only Pandora's Box but also Diary of a Lost Girl, forever ensuring her status as a screen icon.

This exquisitely produced album celebrates Lulu with rare film footage stills, private photos, letters, interviews, and text by renowned film critic Peter Cowie, exploring this influential cult figure and abiding symbol of the Jazz Age.

Mademoiselle presents photographs of Coco Chanel taken by Douglas Kirkland in 1962 on assignment in Paris for the American magazine Look. These photos reveal both the working fashion icon and the sympathetic character beneath, showing Mademoiselle leaving her suite at the Ritz Hotel, in her apartment and studio at 31 rue Cambon, and watching a défilé from the famous mirrored staircase. Karl Lagerfeld has conceived and designed Mademoiselle, as well as written an introduction and captions to Kirkland’s photos. “Images left behind are in the end stronger than truth and facts. Insight into each contact sheet is provided in texts written by the photographers themselves or by experts chosen by members’ estates.

Many acknowledged greats of photography are here, such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Elliott Erwitt and Inge Morath, as well as Magnum’s latest generation, Jonas Bendiksen, Alessandra Sanguinetti and Alec Soth among them.
