VICE’s irreverence and determination not to kowtow to advertisers has led to an aesthetic that began simply as unique but has grown into a culture that has defined an entire epoch of underground photography. Whether it’s ex-cons showing how to make a shiv-proof vest out of National Geographics or the homeless garbage eaters in Bangladesh posing for a hipster fashion shoot, VICE is never satisfied with simply presenting a well-composed photograph. There’s always a story and that is precisely why VICE photography is as respected as it is imitated.

The book will be divided into five parts. "Vice Photographers" will juxtapose the work of established names (see above) against up-and-comers like Jamie Warren, Jerry Hsu and Patrick O’Dell. After interviews with and portfolios from seven of each group, we’ll turn to "Vice’s Photojournalism" highlights. These images will be culled both from the magazine’s editorial content over the years and from the photo issues VICE has put out annually since April 2001. The third section will be "Vice Fashion," which includes shoots like "Anna Wintour, You’re Wrong" wherein VICE featured overweight women in seductive poses, or the "Sex Issue’s" fashion shoot that had every well-dressed model fornicating with the next. The final two sections are a collage of previously published VICE favorites and new stuff discovered since the last photo issue.

The result is an eye-popping anthology that beautifully illustrates the best of recent alternative photography from around the world.

The vivid voices that speak from these pages are not those of historians or scholars. They are the voices of ordinary men and women who experienced - and helped to win - the most devastating war in history, in which between 50 and 60 million lives were lost.

Focusing on the citizens of four towns - Luverne, Minnesota; Sacramento, California; Waterbury, Connecticut; Mobile, Alabama; - The War follows more than forty people from 1941 to 1945. Around the world in 1424 days: the epic voyage behind the making of the book 1000 Families

Part travel journal, part scrapbook, this unique book traces the four-year, 250,000-km journey of photographer Uwe Ommer during the making of TASCHEN’s 1000 Families. Called a “family album of planet earth,” 1000 Families is a vast collection of portraits taken by Ommer in over 130 countries in all corners of the world. Naturally, a voyage of such epic proportions bears its fair share of anecdotes, adventures, mishaps, and souvenirs, and Transit traces the experience via stories and images. From closed borders and broken bridges to late rainy seasons, curious customs officers, thieves, coups d’état, raging fevers, and a far from “unbreakable” Land Rover, Ommer found truth in the maxim “just about everything that can go wrong, will.” This amusing and original compilation paints a vivid picture of what it’s like to travel to the most remote corners of the globe for four years, meeting countless people and observing the great cultural and social similarities and differences that mark the human race.

About the photographer:
Uwe Ommer became fascinated with photography at a young age and in 1962 moved to Paris, where he initially worked as a photographer’s assistant. Within a few years, he opened his own photography studio, primarily shooting fashion and advertising photos. Quickly gaining respect for his work in Paris, Ommer began showing in local galleries and eventually published his first book, Photoedition Uwe Ommer, in 1979, a collection of personal and advertising works. In the following years, he would publish five more books of his photographs. In 2002, Uwe Ommer was awarded an Honorary Fellowship to the Royal Photographic Society for the impact of his lifetime of work. His other books for TASCHEN include Black Ladies, Asian Ladies, Transit, and 1000 Families.

Living somewhere as renowned for rain and ridiculous property prices as England, it is hardly difficult to see why Sarah, her husband and their son though becoming olive growers in Italy would be a good idea. Following on from the TV programme showing Sarah's idea becoming reality, this book follows the family's move from the very germ of the idea through finding a house, building up their business and learning about the local community. For years, Ron Galella, “the godfather of U.S. paparazzi culture,” has provided the world a glimpse into the off-limits world of celebrity. With Viva l’Italia!, a deeper and more probing Galella emerges. He sets out to find his own Italian roots, and in so doing, takes us on viaggio as he combs his vast archive for images of Italian and Italian-American actors, artists, and fashion designers, along with a wide range of other cultural icons.

Some crossed the ocean, some changed their names, some were born in disparate locations as with Dean Martin of Steubenville, Ohio, and Frank Sinatra of Hoboken, New Jersey; but they all brought with them passion born of Italy - love of cinema, music, art, and fashion - as Galella triumphantly proclaims with Viva l’Italia!

Discovered in 2007, nanny-cum-street photographer Vivian Maier has since become a cult figure. 

This volume presents a survey of her candid oeuvre and the first comprehensive biography of this exceptional woman.

A good street photographer must be possessed many talents: an eye for detail, light, and composition; impeccable timing; a populist or humanitarian outlook; and a tireless ability to constantly shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot and never miss a moment. It is hard enough to find these qualities in trained photographers with the benefit of schooling and mentors and a community of fellow artists and aficionados supporting and rewarding their efforts. It is incredibly rare to find it in someone with no formal training and no network of peers.

Yet Vivian Maier is all of these things, a professional nanny, who, from the 1950s until the 1990s, took over 100,000 photographs worldwide — from France to New York City to Chicago and dozens of other countries — and yet showed the results to no one. The photos are amazing both for the breadth of the work and for the high quality of the humorous, moving, beautiful, and raw images of all facets of city life in America’s post-war golden age.

It wasn’t until local historian John Maloof purchased a box of Maier’s negatives from a Chicago auction house and began collecting and championing her marvellous work just a few years ago that any of it saw the light of day. Presented here for the first time in print, Vivian Maier: Street Photographer collects the best of her incredible, unseen body of work.

An amateur street photographer, Vivian Maier worked for forty years as a nanny in Chicago. 

During these years she took over 100,000 pictures, primarily of people and cityscapes, but never shared them with anyone. They were accidently rediscovered by Chicago historian, John Maloof, in 2007. 

He now presents the first comprehensive publication of this unknown photographic talent’s sensational treasure.
