Martin Munkacsi set great store by the fact that he was the best-paid photographer of his time. Indisputably one of the most significant photographers of the 20th century, he shaped the beginnings of modern photojournalism.

Munkacsi’s work reveals a tense, technology-obsessed, glamorous and contradictory epoch. He published his first sports photos in 1921, and went on to work for Berlin Illustrirte Zeitung, Uhu, Die Dame, Vu and other international publications. By the time he emigrated to the USA in 1934, he had revolutionized fashion photography. He worked for Harper’s Bazaar, published works in LIFE to great acclaim, and photographed the influential series ‘How Americans Live’ for Ladies’ Home Journal.

Munkacsi combined journalistic accuracy with a highly formal aesthetic, inspiring Henri Cartier-Bresson to take up the art.

Munkacsi’s work was scattered throughout the world, but this volume brings together for the first time images from all Munkacsi’s artistic phases, including several photographs and bodies of work never seen since their magazine publication.

Видавництво: Daab

1999 the international recognized fashion photographer Jochen Arndt met MASAKO, a (half-) Japanese woman at a “GoSee” in Cologne. A liaison of a special kind developed between them – a platonic “amour fou” between a model and a photographer. Jochen Arndt highly appreciates her versatility, her acting talent and her naturalness in front of the camera. In a period of six years the two of them realised several photographic projects whose highly diverse outcome is published for the first time. In the eyes of the photographer Jochen Arndt MASAKO can range from being the nice girl from next door to being wicked of devoted and affectionate; she can be a bitch or well behaved, a vamp or... simply herself.

Arnold Newman was one of the most productive, creative and successful portrait photographers of the twentieth century.

For more than sixty years Newman was recognized by regular publication in the most influential magazines of the day, major solo exhibitions and appearances in many of the world’s most prestigious photography collections.

This landmark publication – the first monograph to be published after Newman’s death in 2006 – is packed with iconic images and includes a preface by Todd Brandow and short biographies of Newman’s sitters by Corinne Currat.

More than 200 mainly black-and-white photographs, including dozens never before seen in book form, showcase the photographer’s remarkable talent. Famous sitters range from painters, writers and musicians to businessmen, bankers and leaders of the industry, and include Truman Capote, Marc Chagall,
J. F. Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, Pablo Picasso, Igor Stravinsky and Andy Warhol. Individual and group portraits are represented in the book, as well as abstracts, landscapes, architectural
details and cityscapes.

Two essays by William A. Ewing shed light on Newman’s growing practice; Arthur Ollman provides an informative and entertaining look back at an old friend, and David Coleman focuses on an important national commission undertaken by the photographer.

Picture Perfect. The photo duo behind some of fashion’s glossiest shots

Mert Alas, born in Turkey, and Marcus Piggott, born in Wales, met in 1994, at a party on a pier in Hastings, England. Piggott asked Alas for a light, the pair got talking, and rapidly discovered they had plenty in common, not least a love of fashion. Three years later, the duo now known as Mert and Marcus had moved into a derelict loft in East London, converted it into a studio, and had their first collaborative photographic work published in Dazed & Confused.

These days, Mert and Marcus shape the global image of such renowned brands as Giorgio Armani, Roberto Cavalli, Fendi, Miu Miu, Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Givenchy, and Lancôme, and public figures including Lady Gaga, Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, Linda Evangelista, Gisele Bündchen, Björk, Angelina Jolie, and Rihanna. Their photographs encompass a wide range of styles and influences but are renowned particularly for their use of digitized augmentation of images, and a fascination for strong, sexually charged, confident female subjects: “powerful women, women with a meaning, a you-don’t-have-to-talk-or-move-too-much-to-tell-who-you-are kind of woman.”

Bringing our best-selling Collector’s Edition to an affordable, compact format, this collection explores the unique vision of a creative partnership that has defined and redefined standards for glamour, fashion, and luxury. Approximately 300 images from the megawatt Mert and Marcus portfolio are accompanied by an introduction by Charlotte Cotton.

First published as a TASCHEN Collector’s Edition, now available as an affordable, compact edition

Видавництво: Schirmer/Mosel Verlag
  • Serge Normant, born in France and based in New York, is the ultimate hairstylist of the international movie and fashion scene, working with the worlds best photographers, make-up artists, and designers. His first book, with essays by Julia Roberts, Isabella Rossellini, and Verushka, is a visual hymn to hair.

A beautifully designed monograph surveying the works of the highly acclaimed contemporary photographer.

Kenna’s photographs captivate viewers through their silent drama and magnetism: rather than being accurate descriptions of a place, the photographer seems interested in capturing the invisible lines which enclose space, and in so doing arousing a viewer’s imagination and reverie. Michael Kenna is an artist for whom the subject is above all the opportunity for a tremendous but constant variation in his view of the world.

• This catalogue showcases 290 black-and-white photographs: 200 traces the artist’s career, from early 1970s images shot in England, to the photographs of the following three decades, which result from travels and commissions in every continent throughout the world; 35 records Venice’s everlasting appeal; 20 reflect one of Kenna’s most important jobs, that of recording the Nazi concentration and extermination camps.
• Michael Kenna’s photographs have been the subject of over thirty books and catalogues, and are included in such permanent museum collections as The National Gallery, Washington, D.C.; The Shanghai Art Museum, Shanghai; and The Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

About the Author:

Michael Kenna was born in England in 1953 but has been living in the United States for thirty years. Of the many showings of his works that have been held in public venues and private galleries, mention should be made particularly of those in museums in France, Japan and the United States, the latest being in the French National Library, Paris, in 2009.

Mika Ninagawa
ID: 7976
Видавництво: Rizzoli

This is the first monograph to be published in the West on the work of Mika Ninagawa, one of Japan’s most celebrated photographers.

The appeal of Mika Ninagawa’s photography can best be summed up by a signature approach that is bathed in vivid colours and is dreamlike in its manipulation of depth of field. Whether it is portraiture, landscape, or still life, at the heart of her work are themed looks that rotate between flora, fauna, landscapes, and glamorous young women to create Ninagawa’s lush fashion tableaux. A cultural superstar in Japan, where celebrities seek her portraiture, she is now breaking out in the West. Ninagawa shoots her ornately clad human subjects against baroque stylings that suggest a firm grasp of practical scenography, and the work achieves a calm, pictorial mastery.

Portraits of local and international personalities, from Chiaki Kuriyama to Beyoncé, pepper her portfolio, and her distinct and vibrant aesthetic has been very influential in the fashion world.

Lauded in Japan as an art and fashion photographer, the assertion on Mika Ninagawa’s official website of being "Japan’s most popular photographer" is no idle boast. She is certainly the most prolific. Formally represented by Tomio Koyama’s influential gallery, Ninagawa’s images are widely exhibited in Japan and abroad. She has had key installations at Colette in Paris and Arndt and Partner in Berlin and is a frequent participant at Art Basel Miami. She received the prestigious Kimura Ihei Award in 2001.

Miles Aldridge
ID: 11028
Видавництво: Rizzoli

The first monograph from the brilliant fashion photographer Miles Aldridge. With a cinematic approach to fashion photography, Miles Aldridge creates singular scenes with psychologically complex characters in surreal and fantastic settings. His brilliant, candy-colored images engage viewers with an appealing mix of overt sexuality and sweetness. No detail is left uncovered in his eye-popping, erotically charged fashion photographs, which transform slightly sordid scenarios into acid-hued glamour. Each photograph is a complex world unto itself, and these lush images invite viewers to linger, for there is always something else to see, some deeper layer of meaning to uncover. Including hand-drawn storyboards that Aldridge uses to fix the idea of a shoot in his mind, as well as previously unpublished material, this monograph is filled with intimate insight into the photographer’s point of view and process. With deliciously naughty scenes and lushly evocative photography, this book lures readers into Aldridge’s irresistible world.
