This series presents international architects and designer in monographies. Pierro Lissoni is one of Italy's most successful Designers, leading a company in Milan with over 50 Architects and Designers.  So far he is known more for his furniture design rather than his architecture. He is often thought of as a minimalist, but in reality, Piero Lissoni's aim is to create a complementary cohabitation of different styles. His highest goal is simplicity: as way of thinking, as an attitude, simplicity holds a great inner complexity. For Piero Lissoni it is always imperative to scale down and get to the bottom of things. Among his customers are renown companies such as Boffi and Matteograssi. The book introduces to a selection of his outstanding projects all around the world.

With offices in Milan and New York, Lissoni & Partners has a 30-year history in developing international projects in the fields of architecture, landscape, interior, product, and graphic design, as well as acting as art director for a range of prestigious companies.

Led by Piero Lissoni, the practice combines a range of expertise with a tailored approach that sets it apart, establishing a stylistic code and a visual identity that are clearly recognizable. The works are inspired by a sense of rigor and simplicity and are characterized by a regard to detail, coherence, and elegance with particular attention to proportion and harmony.

Piero Lissoni is creative director for Alpi, B&B Italia, Boffi, Living Divani, Lema, Lualdi, Porro, and Sanlorenzo, for whom he also designs an extensive range of products. Recognized as one of the masters of contemporary design, he has worked with many international brands including Alessi, Antrax, Atlas Concorde, Bonacina 1889, Cappellini, Cassina, Cotto, De Padova, Fantini, Fendi Casa, Flos, illycaffè, Janus et Cie, Kartell, Kerakoll, Knoll, Olivari, Salvatori, and Tecno.

Organized around different fields of intervention, the practice comprises Lissoni Casal Ribeiro for masterplans, landscape design, and architecture; Lissoni Associati for interior design, product design, art direction, and fit-outs; and Lissoni Graphx for graphic design, visual communication, and brand identity, while Lissoni New York develops architecture and interior design projects for the American continent.

The book, edited by Stefano Casciani, is the first far-reaching monographic study on Lissoni, richly illustrated with photographs, floor plans, and sketches. It is structured by theme and includes Lissoni’s most important projects for industrial and residential architecture, as well as commercial and public spaces, museums displays, boats, graphic design, and product design.

An exhaustive monograph on the eminent architect, emblematic of Milanese, and also Italian, 20th-century architectural and figurative culture.

Celebrated in the 1930s, controversial and forgotten during the postwar period, and finally rediscovered today, Piero Portaluppi was an undisputed protagonist of 20th-century Italian architecture. An eclectic protagonist who steered clear of specific styles and schools, a master of hydroelectric architecture, and a great town planner whose projects changed the face of Milan. Produced in collaboration with the Fondazione Piero Portaluppi, this new exhaustive monograph comprises a large photo album with new colour images of Portaluppi’s architectural projects and interiors, taken by the well-known photographer Ciro Frank Schiappa; three previously unpublished essays, illustrated with vintage photos by Antonio Paoletti; views and models of Portaluppi’s projects; items documenting his personal interests (cartoons, diagrams, sundials, postcards, newspaper cuttings). The volume also features an interview with Portaluppi’s nephew, architect Piero Castellini, by the famous film director Luca Guadagnino; an unpublished essay by architect Paolo Portoghesi; a biography of Piero Portaluppi by Jacopo Ghilardotti; a list of works and a bibliography compiled by Ferruccio Lupi, conservator at Fondazione Piero Portaluppi.

About the Authors:

Piero Maranghi, great-grandson of Piero Portaluppi, is director of the Fondazione Portaluppi.
Ciro Frank Schiappa (Dublin, 1971) studied photography at Fondazione Studio Marangoni in Florence, Italy. His photographs have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide

Today, sustainable building means planning and producing structures that offer their users a high degree of comfort while only requiring a small amount of energy to operate.

This entails: a high degree of thermal comfort, a good supply of daylight, good sound insulation with respect to both external and internal sources of noise, good room acoustics, the avoidance of any problems whatsoever with condensation or mold, and such a low energy requirement that especially gentle and efficient methods can be used to meet the remaining demand.

At first glance, it might seem quite difficult to fulfill all these requirements. Taken together, the various textbooks on building physics and building automation and the large number of EN and SIA standards now in existence are more confusing than they are useful.

By contrast, this manual presents the most important information on all the key aspects of sustainable building in concise and clearly organized form; makes it easy to put it into practice with the help of graphics, tables, and step-by-step instructions; illustrates it with examples; and supplements it with practical tips.

That is not to say that PINPOINT is intended to replace a textbook or standards collection. On the contrary, it is meant to help practitioners who already have a grasp of the basics make rational use of their expertise while keeping their focus on the essentials.

One the greatest architectural artists of all time, and certainly the most famous copper engraver of the 18th century, Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778) is most known for his terrifyingly original series of etchings of labyrinthine and megalomaniac prisons, Carceri d'Invenzione. In his own day, he was most celebrated for his Vedute, 137 etchings of ancient and modern Rome; so renowned were these startling and dramatic chiaroscuro images, imbued with Piranesi's romantic feeling for archaeological ruins, that they formed the mental picture of Rome for generations after. Indeed, Piranesi could be said to have shaped a whole strain of contemporary architecture, as well as the wider visualization of antiquity itself. In our time, he has had a direct influence on writers such as Borges and Kafka and on filmmakers such as Terry Gilliam and Peter Greenaway. Anyone who contemplates Piranesi's etchings will confront the existential nightmare of human existence and its infinite mysteries…

Archaeology and Imagination. Impossible staircases and startling ruins from Italy’s master engraver

The most famous 18th-century copper engraver, Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720–1778) made his name with etchings of ancient Rome. His startling, chiaroscuro images imbued the city’s archaeological ruins with drama and romance and became favourite souvenirs for the Grand Tourists who travelled Italy in pursuit of classical culture and education.

Today, Piranesi is renowned not just for shaping the European imagination of Rome, but also for his elaborate series of fanciful prisons, Carceri, which have influenced generations of creatives since, from the Surrealists to Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Edgar Allan Poe, Jorge Luis Borges, and Franz Kafka.

Loosely based on contemporary stage sets rather than the actual dingy dungeons of Piranesi’s day, these intricate images defy architectural reality to play instead with perspective, lighting, and scale. Staircases exist on two planes simultaneously; vast, vaulted ceilings seem to soar up to the heavens; interior and exterior distinctions collapse. With a low viewpoint and small, fragile figures, the prison scenes become monstrous megacities of incarceration, celebrated to this day as masterworks of existentialist drama.

In the post-industrial age, Dusseldorf is increasingly focusing on future-oriented services in fields such as media and communications. Current urban planning reflects this trend, as does the city planners’ theme, “Preserving identity while shaping the future.” Dusseldorf’s planning serves the demands of the New Economy, promotes cultural, educational and scientific facilities, and preserves the city’s characteristic blend of traditional lifestyle, strong business pulse and international flair. Urban planning in Düsseldorf includes outstanding projects on an international scale, such as the Media Harbor, the Airport City and the new fairgrounds. Special importance is assigned to urban planning projects with emphasis on improving the image of the city center, exemplified by the PLATZDA! Program. New developments also include high-quality residential units, as seen in the Heerdter Feld estate. This book, published under the patronage of mayor Joachim Erwin in the series “Plans, Projects, and Buildings,” presents one hundred projects that are currently in planning, under construction, or already completed. It features ample photographs and plans, and provides a kind of snapshot of current architectural developments in Dusseldorf.

Abstract:

Carry forward Regional Context

Exploration of local features and traditional context creates spaces that shows care and respect for people, spreads charm of history and beauty of encounter of the new and the old. Correct treatment for relationship between protection of historical context and new construction can better realize planning that suits local conditions. Close connection of cultural landscape with natural environment creates spaces with new features. Seaming various spaces with cultural context can blend the new and the old into a whole.

Create a Harmonious Neighborhood

With development of cities, the role of community shifts from a place of living to a place that cares people’s well-being. Whether traditional warm family moments can be brought back in life in modern communities attracts wide attention. A harmonious neighborhood not only facilitates life, study and work, but also has a positive impact on community development. Creation of a harmonious neighborhood needs to make behaviors of associating and activity attributes as major factors in planning, build up public facilities, optimize layout of dwellings and strengthen connection of spaces to promote communication among neighbors under one roof.

Promote Value of Commercial Facilities

To optimize layout of commercial real estate, the solution is equilibrium, which refers to balance and compatibility among commercial forms, brands and layouts. Equilibrium contributes to mutual promotion for different markets and categories of commodities. Furthermore, it will enhance all-round development and maximize commercial value.
