Taste and Place: The Design Hotels Book is a broad and inclusive exploration of food, an integral part of purposeful travel.

In our most ambitious book yet, we have called upon leading writers, photographers, creative chefs, and culinary innovators to explore forward-looking ideas and inspiring practices around food in our hotels, destinations, and larger community. Featuring stories from Rockhouse Hotel in Jamaica, Rastrello in Italy, Satoyama Jujo in Japan, and many more Design Hotels locations, these stories go beyond the dish, the kitchen, and the dining room to reveal the holistic connectivity of food.

We find that the ecosystem of a hotel seen through the lens of food provides a perfect microcosm to better understand bigger system changes. With this rather special book, we at Design Hotels reflect on what we can bring to these shifts in terms of the hospitality we support and want to see in the future. Read more about our journey here.

Taste and Place: The Design Hotels Book includes a story about how kitchen camaraderie is created at Bursa Hotel in Kyiv, Ukraine. The hotel has been forced to close its doors for now due to the war, but the team is safe and has given us their approval to go ahead with the book release. As a sign of our support, we pledge to donate this year’s online sale profits to humanitarian aid actions suggested by our two Ukrainian member hotels.

This influential reference work ― revered by architects, designers, restaurateurs, hoteliers and creatives around the world ― contains exquisite images from leading photographers and expert commentary from the world’s greatest food writers and culinary innovators. Their stories take the reader beyond the dish, the kitchen and the dining room to explore the holistic connectivity between food and locality; its provenance and production; the people, landscape and architecture. From regional terroir, through the kitchen, to the community, the stories gathered from the experts that created them detail their methods of production; work practices; and visionary hospitality. It poses questions such as, how can we travel more responsibly? How can hotels reduce their impact on the environment? How can travelers give back more than they take? Journeying from the ancient island of Crete; through traditions in Swiss and Japanese mountains; to cutting-edge culinary practices in the Caribbean ― every hotel featured in this annual compendium is uniquely exquisite.

Discover the story behind the award-winning rosé wines from Provence’s Château d’Esclans, which inspired the “rosé revolution.”

Château d’Esclans’s impressive estate extends across 660 acres in the heart of Provence, France. Dating back to the time of the Gauls, vines have grown on its lands for centuries. When its founder Sacha Lichine acquired the property in 2006, he was destined to shake up the wine world: he set out to create the best rosés and to forever transform their place in the collective imagination, from accessible rosés to ultra-premium, luxury wines.

Exquisitely photographed, the never-before-published images showcase the history and spirit of Château d’Esclans. From spectacular images of the vineyards throughout the seasons to an exploration of the wine-making process and the people behind it, this book invites readers to discover how rosé wines come to life, and how they embody the essence of summer insouciance and the Provençal art de vivre. Esclans’s most popular bottles — Whispering Angel, Rock Angel, Les Clans, and Garrus — are icons of contemporary oenology, beloved by celebrities and lauded by wine experts alike. An exclusive look into one of Provence’s most innovative wine-making estates, this is the perfect book for rosé enthusiasts everywhere.

As is to be expected, this lively guide to beer-related travel contains a comprehensive list of hundreds of breweries large and small -- both long-standing and freshly minted--that are open for tours and tastings along with an in-depth look at their different approaches to brewing, philosophies about flavors and ingredients, and what makes their beers special.

But this book digs deep into the world of beer and includes a multitude of ideas for exploring the world's best beer destinations: the Pacific Northwest's gleaming modern taprooms; atmospheric English pubs; iconic breweries including San Francisco's Anchor Steam and the Czech Republic's original Pilsner; boisterous festivals from Munich's Oktoberfest to Denver's Great American Beer; and other points of interest such as Germany's pop-up beer gardens or a pub crawl in Dublin where you can hoist a Guinness at James Joyce's favorite pub.

The book is liberally illustrated with atmospheric photos and reproductions of beer labels and logos and includes information on beer styles, food and beer pairings, drinking traditions, glassware, and a primer on brewing.

Provence is a land apart, a land of outstanding beauty and character. This book is a celebration of the spirit of place that continues to entrance visitors

The Greeks, the Romans, the barbarians of the North and the Moors have all left their traces in its villages and small towns, from the hills and mountains of the Lubéron to the villages perchés of the Alpes-Maritimes.

It is in smaller communities that the true Provençal spirit can be found: in sunlight falling across the tightly grouped terracotta roofs, or in the velvety shade in an ancient square – the country of Marcel Pagnol and Jean de Florette. Such scenes come alive here in Hugh Palmer’s radiant photographs and Michael Jacobs’ evocative accounts.

The book opens with the villages of the Vaucluse and the Bouches-du-Rhône then moves east to the Var and eventually the mountains of the Alpine départements, drawing out the special characteristics of each region. Here are the tranquil villages of the centre, but in stark contrast are the fortified hill villages of the east, perched on crests or terraced along the mountainside.

People have always been fascinated by the mountains. They are a source of strength and a symbol of freedom, the perfect setting for an in-depth time-out, for self-discovery, or the sporting challenge. Beyond the hustle and bustle of everyday life, the beauty of nature offers inspiration and relaxation.

In the setting of the Alps, this volume presents wonderful new accommodations with powerful design ideas that have been consistently applied. The architecture enters into a dialog with the mountains and appears sometimes archaically rough, wooden and close to nature, or also with contrasting shapes and materials. Despite the many different concepts, the presented projects are always distinguished by their high-quality design, their uniqueness, and their individuality.
