This book chronicles in detail the various phases of the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, which is the third to connect Europe and Asia over the Bosphorus straits.

From its design and engineering concept to its realisation, this book offers detailed insights through a historical essay, texts, interviews, illustrations, diagrams, and stunning photography. The book pays particular attention to the engineering accomplishments of the bridge, through a series of drawings and photographs that explain the process of its realisation and its operative functionality. It also captures, through specially commissioned images by renowned photographer Michel Denance, the experience of the traveler crossing the bridge from Europe to Asia, its presence as a major work of infrastructure in the landscape, and its relation to the city of Istanbul.

Shunmyo Masuno, Japan's leading garden designer, is at once Japan's most highly acclaimed landscape architect and an 18th-generation Zen Buddhist priest, presiding over daily ceremonies at the Kenkoji Temple in Yokohama. He is celebrated for his unique ability to blend strikingly contemporary elements with the traditional design vernacular. He has worked in ultramodern urban hotels and in some of Japan's most famous classic gardens. In each project, his work as a designer is inseparable from his Buddhist practice. Each becomes a Zen garden, "a special spiritual place where the mind dwells."

This beautiful book, illustrated with more than 400 drawings and color photographs, is the first complete retrospective of Masuno's work to be published in English. About the Author:

Mira Locher is an architect and professor who works in the U.S. and Japan. She studied at Smith College before receiving her Master of Architecture degree from the University of Pennsylvania. After working for Team Zoo Atelier Mobile in Japan for seven years, she set up an architectural practice in the U.S. with Takayuki Murakami. Mira Locher is Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Manitoba (Canada). She is the author of Super Potato Design, Zen Gardens and Zen Garden Design.
