Innovations at home. Exceptional contemporary houses from Chile to Croatia to China

Designing private homes offers architects more freedom than corporate projects to express their ideas and try out new concepts. Conceiving living spaces is not without its own set of challenges, for which architects are forever looking for innovative solutions - rethinking the way we inhabit our home and live our daily lives is all part of the job when designing a house. Nowadays environmental concerns have become crucial in building sustainable structures, changing the playing field quite profoundly. This two-volume publication rounds up 100 of the world’s most interesting and pioneering homes from the past decade, featuring a host of talents both new and established, including John Pawson, Richard Meier, Shigeru Ban, Tadao Ando, Zaha Hadid, Herzog and de Meuron, Daniel Libeskind, Alvaro Siza, UN Studio, and Peter Zumthor.

Timberland. The wooden structures of the 21st century

Not so very long ago, some might have considered wood a material of the past, long since replaced by more modern components such as concrete and steel. The truth is radically different. Bolstered by new manufacturing techniques and ecological benefits, wood has seen a fabulous resurgence in contemporary construction.

This double-volume survey explores how architects around the world have created and invented with this elementary material. Featuring follies, very large buildings, and ambitious urban renewal schemes, it celebrates the diverse deployment of wood from architects in China, Chile, and everywhere in between. We see how wood can at once transform urban spaces, as in the Metropol Parasol in Seville by Jürgen Mayer H., and allow for sensitive interventions in natural environments, as at the Finnish Forest Research Institute by SARC Architects, or the Termas Geométricas Hot Springs Complex by Germán del Sol.

True to all TASCHEN architecture tomes, the book pays tribute to many emerging international talents, as well as to such renowned figures as Tadao Ando to Renzo Piano. It celebrates each of these architect’s vision and innovation, as well as investigating the techniques, trends, and principles that have informed their work with wood. It examines the computer-guided milling that has allowed for novel new forms, the responsible harvesting that allows wood to align with our environmental concerns, and, above all, wood’s enduring appeal to our senses and our psyche, comforting hectic modern lives with a sense of arcadian beauty and simplicity.

Rooms with a view. A collection of 100 heavenly hideaways

When travelling for business, we often prefer hotel rooms of the same type in London, Paris, or Shanghai. It s just more convenient. A different set of rules applies when they search for a place to celebrate a special family holiday, a weekend with a new lover, or a few days of blissful solitude with some great books. Suddenly a balcony with postcard-worthy views counts more than the number of TV channels, a sumptuous bed with a heavenly mattress and hand-ironed linens more than Wi-Fi connection in every nook and cranny of the hotel building.

That s where this new TASCHEN collection comes in. A compilation of 100 hotels, in countries from Abu Dhabi to Vietnam, the two volumes make it a breeze to choose where to relax next. The gamut runs from dream castles like Villa Feltrinelli on Lake Garda to the glass-fronted hipster chic of Juvet Hotel in Norway; from Mediterranean pensiones with nostalgic flair and moderate rates to the pricey-yet-worthy desert glamour of Amangiri resort in Utah s canyon country. Even dedicated web scouts will be tempted by this book to cuddle up on their sofa for a round of paper travelling. While fans of interior design might use it as an inspiring global selection of splendid sofas, beds, lights, and bathroom features.

 - 100 very special hotels and guesthouses all over the world
 - rom bed & breakfast basic to six-star luxurious
 - Selected by TASCHEN s style and travel department according to criteria like stylistic harmony, location, service, and cost-performance ratio
 - Each hotel comes with a reader-friendly chart listing the number of rooms, current prices, type of cuisine, amenities, plus the all-important X-factor: the feature that makes staying there a truly unique experience
 - The full scope of contemporary travel in two neat volumes, coffee table-sized and with countless glossy photographs

This book combines the essence of architecture and art, and explores how designers find new ways in which to balance the various contradictions and conflicts and to perfectly express their understanding of space and the owners' initial ideas and requirements. At the same time, each new project always contains many uncertain factors that refer to the furnishings or even space composition. Each of these factors seem to tell a never ending story and records people's feeling of excitement, confusion, recalling and longing. In order to illustrate the essence of interior design in a more accurate way, this book has systematically deconstructed every aspect of interior design that refers to space, structure, interface, decoration as well as special areas. Each aspect is highly detailed and illustrated from the point of functional area, besides, descriptive text and the corresponding plan vividly recur the transformation from plane to space, from the abstract to the intuition. Readers will not only find inspiration from the projects showcased in this book, but will also experience the peculiarity of interior design and enjoy the tactile sensation of the textured space.

The greatest challenge in designing homes is negotiating the delicate balance between aesthetics and the personal desires of the occupants. While it`s important for the structure to reflect the vision and style of the architect, the client must ultimately feel at home beneath the roof. It is particularly interesting, therefore, to examine the homes that architects create for themselves. If houses reflect their owners` personalities, then architects` own homes are like autobiographies. Location, layout, style, lighting, artwork, furnishings — every detail adds color to the story. Each of these 100 dwellings, presented A-Z by architect, speaks more about its designer than any other building possibly could.
