The book is divided into four sections:

Part 1 identifies the types of wood utilized in interiors, including domestic species like oak, pine, and cedar; exotic varieties like bamboo, cork, and teak; and reclaimed pieces from barn siding, abandoned buildings, and antique furniture.

Part 2 suggests the many ways wood can be employed throughout the house, and spotlights accents like wainscoting and shutters.

Part 3 describes different styles, stains, and finishes of wood, along with how-to instructions for creating your own specialized effects.

Part 4 offers an appendix on purchasing and maintaining wood surfaces - well as a complete section of “stain-and-grain” swatches. Meticulously researched and magnificently presented, this is the indispensable reference for using wood in home decor.

Like working hours, which have changed significantly over the years, so too have the places in which we work. Offices, once enclosed to ensure privacy are now, in many cases, open and transparent, with few dividing screens. Finishes and materials once used exclusively in homes now appear in offices, creating warm environments conducive to productivity and creativity. Stephen Crafti has always been drawn to black houses, irrespective of the materials they are constructed from  be they zinc, timber or simply painted. Unlike many modern houses that scream for attention, black houses sit quietly in the landscape, accentuating the often verdant landscape. There is also a sense of calm and tranquillity about a black home.

Crafti doesn't live in a black house, but he recently upgraded a 1930s home. Everything I touched was changed to black, from the timber fences to the timber floorboards. I even added black curtains and planted black beared irises in his garden. Using black seemed to unify disparate elements in and around his home. While there are numerous black features in Crafti's house, his ideal would be to live in a contemporary black house, with black furniture and black walls. And maybe even a garden filled with black plants. This book, showcasing black houses, is the starting point towards this goal.
