Lighting is a key feature of almost all interiors but it is often treated in a rather superficial manner in most books. This volume features more than 40 recent international projects where the lighting is the defining design feature.

For large schemes, a professional lighting designer is usually employed, but for smaller projects it will often fall to the architect or interior designer to specify the lighting. In either case, it is crucial that the architect or interior designer understands what lighting is available, how it can be used and controlled and how it can be fitted.

Each project includes detailed plans, diagrams, sketches and CAD visuals to demonstrate the lighting techniques involved. These are accompanied by an explanatory text that looks at the original brief, the design concept and the detailed specification of the light fittings. A bonus CD includes technical drawings from the book. This book will be an invaluable resource for professional interior designers and architects in what is a fast-changing field.

Jill Entwistle was editor of Light magazine for several years and is the author of a number of books on lighting, including Designing with Light: Bars and Clubs and Designing with Light: Hotels.

Office design has changed significantly over the last few years and is now one of the most innovative areas of interior design.

It used to be the case that only the public spaces of an office were creatively designed, but increasingly the staff areas are seen as key reflections of the company brand as well. In more radical offices, there is also a growing belief in the importance of work areas as social spaces and a blurring of the distinction between work and recreation.

This book explores in detail 42 of the best recent office design schemes, featuring projects from leading architects around the world. Each project includes photographs as well as detailed drawings and plans, where appropriate, in addition to informative text describing the design concept and process. A bonus CD contains drawings featured in the book, in both eps and dwg (generic CAD) formats.

Good retail design must attract and keep customers, support a brand or store’s image, showcase the product, and work as a functional shopping environment. This book features 44 of the best recent examples of retail design from around the world and examines the details within the larger decorative schemes.

Most retail interiors have a comparatively short life, and economic realities influence choice of materials and methods of construction; while these will mainly be necessarily modest, style or a sense of luxury are effectively achieved by the creative consideration of detail.

Projects range from specialist boutiques to branded high street chain stores, from fashion retailers to eateries, and include descriptive text, colour photographs, floor plans, sections and construction and decorative details. A bonus CD-ROM contains all the drawings as printed in the book, in both EPS and DWG (generic CAD) formats.

« Building for everyone » that is the best definition of what lies behind the unwieldy concept of « barrier - free design » : the complete and total usability of buildings, including for those with disabilities, for the integration of all of societys members can only succeed when their environment is made accessible to them. Demographic changes demand new qualities of private and public space, qualities that are also required by new legislation. The Detail Practice volume « Barrier - Free Design » provides all planners and architects, but also interested building sponsors, with basic practical information and a range of possible planning implementations in the domain of barrier freedom. It shows how corresponding requirements can be turned into aesthetically distinguished architecture. And it demonstrates that taking barrier freedom into account in the early planning stages of a project need not lead to additional costs compared to « classical » construction and design. In addition to an overview of planning fundamentals, the book also includes the associated body of rules and regulations as well as examples of how they are embodied in actual projects and perspectives on their development in the larger European context.

In these days a computer is as much a part of every household's standard equipment as a refrigerator, and yet the explosion of computer technology in the last several decades has transformed the daily life of every member of society far more than even utopians would ever have allowed themselves to dream.

No wonder, then, that from design to production, architecture too is becoming more and more subject to digital influences.

The range of those influences stretches from the classical computer programs used in design and presentation to media-supported design processes all the way to computerized production techniques, to say nothing of industrialized bricklayer "robots."

From measurement to planning and production, architecture is the product of a closely coordinated digital process chain. What influence do digital design digital design and production methods have on contemporary architecture?

How are these methods changing architecture and the way it ist created?

Where does the potential of digital media for architecture lie?

What are the areas in which every individual firm can begin to use them?

What are the advantages of working electronically?

How and at what cost can these methods be integrated into the day-to-day work of the professional architect?

This publication offers answers to these and many other questions on all aspects of the digital design and construction process.

As a critical component in the mix of regenerative energies, photovoltaics help slow the progress of climate change and furnish the earth with a long-term and affordable supply of energy. They are fascinating, with their ability to produce electricity seemingly from nothing, silently, cleanly, and virtually maintenance-free. As a building-integrated technology, photovoltaics have their ideal point of use precisely where electricity is needed and utilize existing spaces and wiring. Yet the scale of current applications of photovoltaics still lags far behind their potential, despite the fact that manufacturers already offer a wide range of different technologies and products. The principal culprits are design and constructional problems as well as issues related to planning law and building regulations. This volume in the DETAIL Practice series is an illustrated guide to the technical, design, and constructional aspects of integrating solar plants into buildings. The chapter on building law, a glossary, and additional sources and directories point the way for further study. Impeccably realized example projects round out the book with demonstrations of the various options for installing photovoltaics on roofs and facades.

In this series, the new techniques of architects and designers are put on show to answer questions relating to the secrets of the best architects from North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australia. The book feature an abundance of sketches, drawings and relevant photographs of specific details which have been selected and submitted by the architect to place the architectural details into perspective. Each project also includes a 250-word descriptive text. The emerging trends are presented in clear and concise layouts. Many details are functional, but many are also decorative. Details can be used to make a building design environment friendly, or called upon to link a building with place, tradition and history. Included are details from corporate and industrial designs, residential architecture and landscape architecture.
