European interiors are perennially fashionable and are feted across the world as being one of the most stylish ways to decorate, whether it be residential or commercial spaces. Buildings placing nature at their core.

As more of the earth’s surface is swallowed up by the built environment, architects are increasingly advised to integrate urban flora and fauna into their designs. Whether developing green roofs, living walls, abundant indoor courtyards, or balconies that connect interior and exterior spaces, the urge to intertwine nature and architecture has never been more apparent.

Embracing this ubiquitous trend, Evergreen Architecture surveys a broad spectrum of residential, institutional, urban, and rural spaces. But as change occurs and solutions to the climate crisis are being integrated on the ground, many new questions are posed. How do residents keep moss-covered walls alive? How can a skyscraper uphold the weight of hundreds of trees?

Evergreen Architecture investigates this movement from the perspective of the architects leading the charge whilst offering diagrams and plans to help the reader understand how each building came together and how it intends to survive.

The days of simply wanting to ‘get the look’ are over: nowadays, we are more interested in achieving a smooth-running and contented home life, and it’s not purely the aesthetics of our interiors that we’re pondering. Key to this more considered approach to homemaking is the storage of all life’s paraphernalia, from everyday essentials (kitchen equipment, bicycles) to seasonal items (skis and suitcases) and, of course, all those bits and pieces you don’t need very often but still want to hang on to (wedding photographs, grandma's china). We have more stuff than ever before, so where (and how) should we keep it all?

In 'Everything in its Place', Rebecca Winward demonstrates how our experience of every room in the house can be improved through a canny choice of storage solutions that balance form and function. She also addresses the fact that, while storage is inherently practical, it also holds huge potential for decorative impact. Examining the subject from every possible angle, Rebecca considers what to store where and what best to store it in before going on to discuss the storage demands of different items (clothes, books, crafting equipment) and even storage by style, from minimalist to vintage to rustic, to name but a few.

About the author

Rebecca Winward, formerly editor of 'Period Ideas' magazine, is an interiors journalist with more than 14 years’ experience. Her work has appeared in a wide variety of publications in the UK and abroad. She particularly enjoys creating practical, family-friendly, and beautifully eclectic interiors on a budget, and is currently renovating a 1970s home.

Robert A. M. Stern Architects, over its forty-year history and across a wide range of building types, has defined principles common to all projects. Stern articulates the ideas that govern his design process through this rich visual presentation of all types of his work: museums and cultural institutions, colleges and universities, commercial and residential developers, and, famously, private residential clients throughout the United States and Europe.

Evidence serves as a visual synthesis of Stern's methodologies, revealing the firm's vision through juxtapositions of building, material and landscape: "We never think of just the building. We like to think of the next bigger thing—what other buildings will come next to it, but also the siting and landscaping. Abstract compositional principles do interest me but not when I begin a design. I begin with a cultural assessment of the building as a type, the place it is set in, and lastly its obligations to its particular moment in time."

Through 400 illustrations, Stern illuminates key architectural concepts by examining components: stunning windows harmonizing with their views, elegant entryways, meticulous stonework, homes conversing with their settings. On each page, Stern pairs images that challenge the idea that tradition means statis. Rather, tradition can be interpreted to suit all situations in an increasingly complex world.

Designs for Living: The Houses of Robert A. M. Stern Architects

This book introduces twelve private country gardens that can be described as “special” for different reasons.

These gardens are firstly special because of the optimal way the landscapers and garden architects have integrated them into the environment in perfect harmony with the surrounding landscape and the architecture of the house.

The maturity of these gardens is another special feature. This often results from the rich history of the site and the ancient trees, but sometimes this maturity is achieved by planting and incorporating fully grown trees and plants in a more recent garden.

Ultimately, what really makes these gardens so special is their owners’ enthusiasm and loving attention: without their dedication these designs would have no soul.

Exceptional Homes shows a variety of distinctive, newly-constructed buildings and ultra-stylish homes in prime locations. The showroom apartments in Berlin, Düsseldorf, and Hamburg feature exquisite furnishings and tasteful color combinations that make them truly inspiring. Traditional architectural layouts are skillfully re-imagined and re-designed for modern living, allowing for light-flooded floor plans with harmonious room sequences to create beautiful, upscale home environments.

Even the common areas of the unique properties are splendidly accentuated — lavish lobbies and elaborate elevators make the mere arrival to a building or residence a memorable experience. Exclusive cooperative projects with prestigious interior design professionals, such as the Italian luxury label Bottega Veneta, demonstrate the exceptional standard upheld by this historic company. All structures are designed by renowned, highly sought-after architectural firms.

“Only value endures” is the guiding principle of the Schmitz family, the real estate developers for subdued luxury. This is precisely what the founder of the company mandated in 1864. Today, the company embodies the same values: developing and building high-quality residential estates on exclusive properties on the basis of a building culture that stands for architectural perfection.

Country Houses, published by Beta-Plus in 2004, has been a longtime bestseller, reprinted several times.

This enthusiasm for rural interiors has prompted a second edition, Exclusive Country Houses, which features ten new, recently finished or restored houses in the European countryside.

Wim Pauwels, founder and managing director of Beta-Plus Publishing, began publishing a series of books in 1997 about architecture and interior design. So far the company has brought out more than 250 titles dedicated to certain themes (such as living rooms, bathrooms, kitchens, children's rooms, antique building materials, restoration, renovation, gardens and swimming pools), plus monographs of architects and interior designers, manuals and yearbooks about timeless and contemporary architecture and interiors. For each book he enlists the assistance of authoritative specialists for the introductory texts and photograph captions.

The London architectural firm Wilkinson Eyre Architects, founded in 1983, has been drawing attention since the 1990s with its wealth of innovative and imaginative designs – notably its spectacular and structurally ambitious bridges. The best-known and most highly acclaimed are the Gateshead Millennium Bridge (2001) and the Floral Street Bridge (2003). The firm has won many prizes, including the RIBA Stirling Prize twice. It has also demonstrated the increasingly international scope of its activities by entering the competitions for the Guangzhou West Tower in China and the Tensegrity Bridge in Washington DC, USA.

This book offers detailed documentation of some 15 structures and projects, with special attention paid to the context of each design. The projects presented include the Stirling Prize-winning Magna Centre in Rotherham, UK; the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea, UK; the Guangzhou West Tower in China; and the Gatwick Airbridge, UK, among others.
