About the Author

Gillian Newberry worked at British Vogue, David Bailey’s photographic studio, and the Royal College of Art’s fashion school prior to assisting Bennison at his antiques shop and with the production of his fabrics. After Bennison’s death, Newberry and her husband founded Bennison Fabrics in 1985. Sir John Richardson is an eminent art historian and Picasso biographer.

As significant sources of inspiration he mentions Leonardo Da Vinci, Tony Duquette, Saint Nicholas and his mother.

Vicente Guallart, pioneer of new media, examines the technological, social and cultural changes in our information society for new urban building. A photographic typology of major Berlin buildings in chronological order and a testimony of the city’s controversial history: from Prussian palaces through to the Bauhaus architecture of the Weimar Republic, the Nazi Olympic Stadium, the Cold War Soviet classicist Stalin Allee, and today’s post-Wall architecture such as the controversial Sony Center.

When German photographer Gerrit Engel moved to New York in 1994 to study architecture, he combed through bookstores in search of a book documenting the city’s most important buildings—not just some eccentric details but each edifice as a whole from the street level to the roof; no fancy photographic distortions but captured as the structures present themselves to the ordinary pedestrian. Having
searched in vain he decided to do it himself. Documenting prefabricated housing estates in East Berlin neighborhood of Marzahn, and Buffalo grain elevators, he knew what he was looking for. What he came up with is no less than a typology of Manhattan architecture: 150 buildings in chronological order of their creation between 1793 and 2005, complete with names of the architects and locations. Engel’s brilliant color photographs present a survey of the mix of styles that make Manhattan a unique architectural environment. We now get what Gerrit Engel had been looking for.

Gert Wingardh (*1951) is Sweden s leading architect. His clever and imaginative spatial creations are remarkable in economic as well as ecological and sociological terms. The focus of his designs is always on the needs of the future users. This monograph analyzes the principal aspects of his work in seminal essays by renowned architecture critics and uses text and images to document all the important buildings of his thirty-year career.
