From the towering Sagrada Família to the shimmering, textured façade of Casa Batlló and the enchanting landscape of Park Güell, it’s easy to see why Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926) gained the epithet “God’s architect.” With fluid forms and mathematical precision, his work extols the wonder of natural creation: columns soar like tree trunks, window frames curve like flowering branches, and ceramic tiling shimmers like scaly, reptilian skin.

With this outstanding attention to natural detail, his inspirations from both neo-Gothic and Orientalist aesthetics, and a lifelong commitment to Catalan identity, Gaudí created a unique brand of the Modernista movement which transformed, and defines, Barcelona’s cityscape.

With seven of Gaudí’s projects listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, this book introduces the architect’s extraordinary vision and unique legacy, exploring the influences and the details which allow his buildings to impress, inspire, and amaze, one century after their construction.

TASCHEN's 25th anniversary - Special edition!

Anyone who visits Barcelona today will come across the works of Antoni Gaudí—the architect who has attracted art-lovers from all over the world to Spain. It was here, in the capital of Catalonia, that the famous master of architecture produced nearly all of his works, including villas for the well-to-do bourgeoisie, the expansive Güell Park (which today is open to the public), and the famous church designed in honour of the Holy Family—a project which was begun over 100 years ago and has yet to be completed. Antoni Gaudí's life was full of contradictions. As a young man he joined the Catalonian nationalist movement and was critical of the church; toward the end of his life he devoted himself completely to the construction of one single church. As a young man Gaudí had a liking for the glamour of social life and the looks of a dandy; in old age, on the other hand, he lived a spartan life. Gaudí never married and devoted his life entirely to his art: architecture. His works have been acclaimed as "soothing oases in a desert of functional buildings," as "precious gems in the uniform grey of rows of houses," and the master himself was acclaimed as the "Dante of architecture". This book provides a sweeping study of his entire career, presenting his complete works via texts and illustrations.

The Complete Gaudí. Freedom of form with the “Dante of architecture”

Antoni Gaudí merged Orientalism, natural forms, and new materials into a unique Modernista aesthetic that put Barcelona on the global architecture map. With brand-new photography, plans and drawings by Gaudí himself, as well as an extensive appendix of all his works including furniture and unfinished projects, this book takes us through the Catalonian’s fantastical universe like never before.

The life of Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926) was full of complexity and contradictions. As a young man, he joined the Catalonian nationalist movement and was critical of the church; toward the end of his life, he devoted himself completely to the construction of one single spectacular church, La Sagrada Família. In his youth, he courted a glamorous social life and the demeanour of a dandy. By the time of his death in a tram accident on the streets of Barcelona, his clothes were so shabby that passersby assumed he was a beggar.

Gaudí’s incomparable architecture channels much of this multifaceted intricacy. From the shimmering surface textures and skeletal forms of Casa Batlló to the Hispano-Arabic matrix of Casa Vicens, his work merged the influences of Orientalism, natural forms, new materials, and religious faith into a unique Modernista aesthetic. Today, his buildings enjoy global popularity and acclaim; his magnum opus, the Sagrada Família, is the most-visited monument in Spain and seven of his works are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Packed full of expert texts and hundreds of full-colour illustrations, including new photography, this book presents Gaudí’s complete oeuvre. Like a personal tour through Barcelona, we explore his residential, religious, and public projects. We see how the “Dante of architecture” was a builder in the truest sense of the word, crafting extraordinary constructions out of minute and mesmerizing details, transforming fantastical visions into realities on the city streets.

Written by Gillian Newberry, Foreword by Sir John Richardson

Видавництво: Rizzoli

The first monograph on the work of renowned twentieth-century British decorator and antiques dealer Geoffrey Bennison.

Geoffrey Bennison (1921–1984) ranks among England’s most influential designers, defying conventional notions of style to conjure up magnificent settings for discerning clients who loved his theatrical and romantic sensibility. The master of the layered look, he used antique textiles with his own fabrics to achieve a complex mix of scale, pattern, and color in inventive shades such as his evocative Red Riding Hood Red and Prussian Blue. His talent for combining eclectic objects, his unerring eye, and his deep knowledge of antiques earned him a reputation for sophisticated originality equaled by very few. Even today, leading designers turn to Bennison for inspiration.

This lavish volume opens with an illuminating text about Bennison’s fascinating history — from his early days at the Slade School of Art and his work as an antiques dealer in London during the swinging sixties to his later career as an interior designer.

All of Bennison’s interiors are showcased, from magnificent country estates and retreats to elegantly appointed apartments and townhouses filled with priceless French and English furniture and curiosities, making this book a must-have for design lovers.

About the Author

Gillian Newberry worked at British Vogue, David Bailey’s photographic studio, and the Royal College of Art’s fashion school prior to assisting Bennison at his antiques shop and with the production of his fabrics. After Bennison’s death, Newberry and her husband founded Bennison Fabrics in 1985. Sir John Richardson is an eminent art historian and Picasso biographer.

According to popular wisdom, beauty is within. But nothing is said about how to get it out, or what on earth you can do with it. In this book, the Belgian decorator Geoffroy Van Hulle demonstrates how it can be seen: beauty, on the inside of a house but also on the inside of a life.

Photographer Raf Ketelslagers captures this vision in incredible images, capturing inspirational interiors, while writer and TV presenter Jo De Poorter describes things that can be beautiful, compelling and imposing outside the walls of the house: from the Académie Francais, the Frick Collection, Dusty Springfield and Levi's jeans to a handful of brioches, Bree Van Der Camp, two or three requiems, Viagra, and the holy virgin Mary herself, in the form of a piece of soap.

Geoffroy Van Hulle is a decorator. He decorates houses, apartments and restaurants in the Benelux, the United Kingdom, France and the United States. His style is contemporary eclectic with baroque and classical influences. He is not afraid of color, character and a stuffed crane here and there. As significant sources of inspiration he mentions Leonardo Da Vinci, Tony Duquette, Saint Nicholas and his mother.

Vicente Guallart, pioneer of new media, examines the technological, social and cultural changes in our information society for new urban building. Presenting the last 15 years of his work, this book investigates architecture’s ability to construct systems for inhabitable environments in diverse environmental, social, and economic conditions. He crosses boundaries through collaborations in geology, sociology, engineering, economics, software and interface design. His projects follow a "natural" logic, referring to components originating in nature, as well as to environmental systems. A logic that connects nature with the transformations of urban spaces, social organizations, and the digital world.

Whilst Soviet modernist buildings in Georgia have enjoyed worldwide recognition for several decades, the art for architecture from that era – monumental decorative mosaics – still await discovery and appreciation from an international audience. Then, as now, these richly coloured mosaics were an independent, yet inextricable part of Georgia’s architecture: they underlined a building’s use, structured its façade, or merged into an elaborate whole. Today, however, many of these works, which were far more than just state propaganda, are under threat of destruction.

For the first time, this volume documents these unique remnants of Soviet history alongside their precise locations. Using vivid photos and detailed texts, Nini Palavandishvili and Lena Prents guide the reader through a diverse selection of mosaics that distinguish themselves from those of the other Soviet Republics. By drawing attention to this artistic legacy of a bygone era, and in the process revealing its beauty and cultural significance, the authors highlight the importance of protecting and preserving it for the future.

Soccer in Germany - that means Bundesliga action between Bayern Munich and Schalke 04 or Hertha BSC Berlin against Hamburger SV. It also means the Champions League and UEFA Cup, as well as the international games between the national teams. Soccer in Germany - it means social places where local identity and social history crystallize. Modern stadiums are architectural masterpieces focused on research, logistics, statics, flexibility and emotion. Stadiums of this magnitude must be capable of admitting thousands of spectators within just a few minutes, they must ensure the safety of the giant structural surfaces in all kinds of weather, and, at the same time, they must provide visitors with the feeling of optimism, pride and a connection with the stadium. Last but not least, soccer stadiums are probably the last remaining places in which all social classes meet. Laborers, students, retirees, politicians, CEOs, entrepreneurs - all are united on the stadium stands. Including all 12 stadiums which are scene of the FIFA World Championship 2006, presented under the architectural focus. Plans and sketches are enclosed as well as an index of the designers and architects.

A photographic typology of major Berlin buildings in chronological order and a testimony of the city’s controversial history: from Prussian palaces through to the Bauhaus architecture of the Weimar Republic, the Nazi Olympic Stadium, the Cold War Soviet classicist Stalin Allee, and today’s post-Wall architecture such as the controversial Sony Center.

When German photographer Gerrit Engel moved to New York in 1994 to study architecture, he combed through bookstores in search of a book documenting the city’s most important buildings—not just some eccentric details but each edifice as a whole from the street level to the roof; no fancy photographic distortions but captured as the structures present themselves to the ordinary pedestrian. Having
searched in vain he decided to do it himself. Documenting prefabricated housing estates in East Berlin neighborhood of Marzahn, and Buffalo grain elevators, he knew what he was looking for. What he came up with is no less than a typology of Manhattan architecture: 150 buildings in chronological order of their creation between 1793 and 2005, complete with names of the architects and locations. Engel’s brilliant color photographs present a survey of the mix of styles that make Manhattan a unique architectural environment. We now get what Gerrit Engel had been looking for.

This is the first book in over two decades devoted to the most important garden designer of the twentieth century.

Gertrude Jekyll (1843–1932) laid the basis for modern garden design and is credited with popularizing an informal, naturalistic look in counterpoint to the rigid, formal landscapes of the Victorian era. Her collaboration with Edwin Lutyens produced seminal garden masterpieces of the Arts & Crafts movement, including Hestercombe and Folly Farm.

Also known as a prolific and influential writer, Jekyll contributed more than a hundred articles to Country Life and designed three gardens for the publication’s founder, Edward Hudson. As a result, the Country Life archive has an unrivalled record of her work.

This book includes a combination of both archival black-and-white and contemporary colour photographs highlighting a selection of the more than 350 gardens Jekyll created.

The book is organized in four sections and then concludes with an extensive bibliography and index.

Introduction: Biographical overview: family, training, early influences, travel, homes; Accomplishments as an artist, gardener, designer, and writer; Circle of friends: artists, gardeners, architects, and writers; importance of their personal gardens, such as Gravetye Manor and Warley Place; Relationship with Country Life, Hudson, E. T. Cook, Robinson, Tipping, Weaver, Hussey; Importance of GJ's articles, books, and editorial activities related to Country Life Home and Garden: Discussion of Munstead Wood: its design, development, role of Lutyens, role played in Jekyll's books and articles for Country Life; visuals b/w, autochromes, and new color. Gardens of Lutyens and Jekyll: Discussion of their working and personal relationship; Jekyll's style with Lutyens design; progression of their partnership; Examples include: Orchards (1899), Tigbourne Court (1899), Goddards (1899), Deanery (1901), Bois des Moutiers (1904), Millmead (1905), Marsh Court (1905), Folly Farm (1906), Lambay (1907), Hestercombe (1908), Lindisfarne (1911), Gledstone (1925), Queen's Dolls' House (1924) Gardens for Small Country Houses: Jekyll's garden design style, her work with other architects, gardens she wrote about in Country Life, and influence on other designers; Examples include: Owlpen Manor, Little Boarhunt and Durford Edge (Triggs); Mounton House (Tipping); Hurtwood House and Westbrook (Turner); Manor House at Upton Grey (Newton), Townhill Park (Guthrie); Valewood Farm, Woodhouse Copse, (Oliver Hill) Garden Ornament: common features in period gardens drawn from Jekyll's books Wall and Water Gardens, Gardens for Small Country Houses, and Garden Ornament, with her comments; Examples of pergolas, arbors, water features, garden houses, ornament, etc., such as Iford, Easton, (Peto); Deanery, Heywood, Marsh Court (Lutyens); Mathern and Mounton (Tipping); Leasowes and other Cotswold houses (Gimson et al); Little Boarhunt (Triggs), and more.
