This inspiring book accompanies the first travelling exhibition about Doris Duke’s estate Shangri La and its influential synthesis of modernist architecture and Islamic art and design.

Situated on five acres of terraced gardens and pools overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Honolulu’s Diamond Head, Shangri La was the idyllic paradise of philanthropist Doris Duke, reflecting her personal passion for the art, architecture, and design of the Islamic world. The estate incorporates unique architectural features, such as carved marble doorways, jalis, and floral ceramic tiles, and the decor includes artifacts, such as silk textiles, jewel-toned chandeliers, and gilt and coffered ceilings, many collected during her travels.

This volume presents an exclusive tour of Shangri La’s breathtaking interiors and landscape, including the splendid furnishings and art. Archival photographs of Duke and friends as well as correspondence and drawings provide a view into a lifestyle defined by the highest sense of aesthetics. Drawing on the work of artist and architect William Lim, this book offers a new, enlightened perspective on what Asian design means today.

Exploring design works ranging from furniture and temporary art installations to interior design and architecture by CL3, founded by William Lim, and related studios Lim + Lu and Open UU, this book presents a fresh consideration of the essence of contemporary Asian design and how it has evolved over the past few decades.

The projects selected share a sensitivity to Asian qualities: a deep appreciation of site and context, craft and design details, with imaginative architectural responses delivering a reinterpretation of cultural heritage and traditions.

The book includes a contextual essay by Hong Kong-based architecture critic and author Catherine Shaw, a foreword by architecture and design curator Aric Chen, and a chapter dedicated to conversations on the modern interpretation of eastern aesthetics and the unique experience of designing for a new Asia between William Lim, Swedish museum director, art critic and writer Lars Nittve, and Shanghai-based architect Lyndon Neri.

The projects are presented in a clear, vibrant graphic style designed by William Lim and artist and graphic designer Stanley Wong, aka anothermountainman, to evoke an Asian quality. Each chapter includes a text by William Lim and features original conceptual sketches, photographs, floor plans, and drawings.

This definitive book tells the visual history of tile decoration in the Indian subcontinent, through vibrant photography and thorough research.

Historic India, which now encompasses the modern nations of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, is celebrated for the richness of its architectural and decorative arts, but less well-known for glazed tiles. Arthur Millner opens up this hitherto neglected subject with a richly illustrated narrative. Millner traces the craft’s roots in Muslim Persia, Afghanistan and Central Asia, showing how imported glazing techniques combined with an ancient local tradition of clay craftsmanship. He explores the production, designs and influences in Indian tiles from antiquity to the colonial period, tracing the historical evolution through a series of key eras, including the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal Empire in Northern India. Although glazed tiles are generally associated with Islam, they also briefly flourished in both Hindu strongholds, such as Gwalior and Orchha, and in Christian Portuguese-ruled Goa. More than four hundred photographs, many of little-known sites, are drawn from the author’s years of travel as well as from colleagues, the V&A Museum archives and other celebrated institutions. These images capture the architectural context and beauty of the designs, providing a visual compendium of styles and techniques. Taken together they offer a unique chronicle of an environmentally threatened aspect of the region’s cultural, artistic and religious evolution over centuries.

About the Author:

Arthur Millner is a consultant and independent scholar in the field of Indian and Islamic art. He lectures at the London School of Oriental and African Studies, the V&A Museum, the Royal Asiatic Society and the Oriental Rug and Textile Society. He is the author of Damascus Tiles (Prestel, 2015).

Living in Morocco celebrates the arts of a country at the height of a cultural renaissance, a land where an ancient tradition of craftsmanship has been sustained and recently reinvigorated. Lavishly illustrated chapters on decorative and folk arts alternate with chapters on Moroccan life today.

We visit Chaouen in the Rif mountains, where the town’s smooth, undulating surfaces are painted a bone-chilling blue-tinted white. We take in the shady blue-and-pink world of the Majorelle Gardens, and explore the stories behind the famous hotel La Mamounia. Most importantly, we see Morocco’s arts brought to life in its homes – from former harems to traditional Hispano-Moorish houses.

A host of glorious photographs make this a book to relish, and the detailed documentation of Morocco’s houses, arts and crafts make it an invaluable resource for anyone involved in interiors or design.

A dazzling study of the role and fundamental importance of decoration in Islamic architecture, available in a new compact format

Surface decoration has always played a fundamental role in Islamic architecture. As human representation is forbidden in Islamic religious monuments, designers employed mosaics, stucco, brickwork and ceramics, and the vigorous use of brilliant colour to reach unparalleled heights of expression. It is this ornamental dimension of Islamic architecture that is explored in this magnificent volume.

Rather than limiting itself to an exclusively historical or chronological perspective, Ornament and Decoration in Islamic Architecture presents four successive approaches to its subject. The first part offers an overview of Islamic architecture, discussing the great diversity it contains. Dealing exclusively with techniques, the second part considers the materials most often used as well as the expertise of the builders and Muslim decorative artists, and the third part explores themes in Islamic ornamentation. Section four discusses aesthetics, and studies the relationship between the buildings – the
structures or their architectonic components – and their ornamental coverings.

Each of these topics is presented through a number of outstanding examples and then through comparable monuments from all over the Islamic world. For anyone in thrall to such great wonders as the Taj Mahal and the Alhambra, and for everyone interested in the world of Islam, this lavish publication will be indispensable

Contents List:

1. Islamic Architecture and Decoration • 2. Materials and Techniques • 3. Ornamental Motifs • 4. Surface Art

About the Authors:

Dominique Clévenot is a professor at the University of Toulouse and is the author of several books on Islamic art.
Gérard Degeorge has contributed to several books on Islamic art and architecture, including The Art of the Islamic Tile and Damascus.

Shunmyo Masuno, Japan's leading garden designer, is at once Japan's most highly acclaimed landscape architect and an 18th-generation Zen Buddhist priest, presiding over daily ceremonies at the Kenkoji Temple in Yokohama. He is celebrated for his unique ability to blend strikingly contemporary elements with the traditional design vernacular. He has worked in ultramodern urban hotels and in some of Japan's most famous classic gardens. In each project, his work as a designer is inseparable from his Buddhist practice. Each becomes a Zen garden, "a special spiritual place where the mind dwells."

This beautiful book, illustrated with more than 400 drawings and color photographs, is the first complete retrospective of Masuno's work to be published in English. It presents 37 major gardens around the world in a wide variety of types and settings: traditional and contemporary, urban and rural, public spaces and private residences, and including temple, office, hotel and campus venues. Masuno achieved fame for his work in Japan, but he is becoming increasingly known internationally, and in 2011 completed his first commission in the United States which is shown here.

Zen Gardens divided into three chapters, covers: "Traditional Zen Gardens," "Contemporary Zen Gardens" and "Zen Gardens outside Japan." Illustrated with photographs and architectural plans or sketches, each garden is described and analyzed by author Mira Locher, herself an architect and a scholar well versed in Japanese culture.

Celebrating the accomplishments of a major, world-class designer, Zen Gardens also serves as something of a master class in Japanese garden design and appreciation: how to perceive a Japanese garden, how to understand one, even how to make one yourself. Like one of Masuno's gardens, the book can be a place for contemplation and mindful repose.

Packed with images of beautiful decorative objects, extravagant interiors, sumptuous fabrics and ornate furniture, this sumptuously produced book explores the enduring allure of Orientalist decor and introduces the princes and aristocrats, artists and poets who commissioned this opulent 18th and 19th-century interiors.

Architects and decorative artists of the time were constantly seeking new sources of inspiration to satisfy the demands of their rich patrons. While some revisited the canons of the classical world, others began to turn their eyes towards the East, and the 'Oriental' became a byword for spectacle and sensuality.

The result was a wave of creative expression that encompassed everything from the smallest objets d’art to entire buildings.

This sumptuously produced book explores the enduring allure of Orientalist decor and introduces the princes and aristocrats, artists and poets who commissioned these opulent interiors. Packed with images of beautiful decorative objects, extravagant interiors, sumptuous fabrics and ornate furniture, this book will transport the reader to another time and place.

ARCHITECTURE IS POLITICAL
The buildings of the foremost Chinese architect of our time

Chinese concept artist Ai Weiwei broke through to fame with a wider audience in Germany with his spectacular presence at documenta in 2007. More recently his hundred million porcelain sunflower seeds at Tate Modern caught the imagination of the public. But Ai Weiwei's architectural projects have attracted less attention to date. He sees architecture as arguably the most political of the art forms. Daab's new richly-illustrated book Ai Weiwei. Architecture is the perfect publication to fill the need...
