From the creative team behind Stone comes another comprehensive study of one of nature's greatest decorating materials: wood. Both an inspirational style guide and a technical manual, Designing a Home with Wood features this fundamental element in every imaginable adaptation: carved entryways, ornate moldings, inlaid floors, beamed ceilings, kitchen cabinetry, and more.

Extensively illustrated with more than 250 full-color photographs, it is sure to inform the professional contractor as well as the do-it-yourselfer.

The book is divided into four sections:

Part 1 identifies the types of wood utilized in interiors, including domestic species like oak, pine, and cedar; exotic varieties like bamboo, cork, and teak; and reclaimed pieces from barn siding, abandoned buildings, and antique furniture.

Part 2 suggests the many ways wood can be employed throughout the house, and spotlights accents like wainscoting and shutters.

Part 3 describes different styles, stains, and finishes of wood, along with how-to instructions for creating your own specialized effects.

Part 4 offers an appendix on purchasing and maintaining wood surfaces - well as a complete section of “stain-and-grain” swatches. Meticulously researched and magnificently presented, this is the indispensable reference for using wood in home decor.

In Designs for Living, Roger H. Seifter, Randy M. Correll, Grant F. Marani, and Gary L. Brewer, who lead the residential practice at Robert A.M. Stern Architects, present fifteen houses the firm has completed over the past ten years. From contemporary interpretations of the shingle style to robust Mediterranean designs, the houses are stylistically diverse reflecting RAMSA’s deep knowledge of history and precedent. Each partner provides insight into the design process and his individual approach to working with clients.

Houses are located in dramatic settings from Napa and Sonoma to the spectacular coastline of the Hamptons and New England. Whether overlooking the ocean or nestled into the mountainside, these remarkable houses reveal the architects’ emphasis on the importance of context and their dedication to exploring the nature of place and environment. Each house invokes the vernacular architectural heritage particular to its region while gracefully reflecting its natural surroundings.

Connecting contemporary lifestyles to traditional American aesthetics, these residences are exceptional both for their timelessness and their ability to evoke a conversation with the past — a dialogue the RAMSA partners believe lies at the heart of architecture.

"While many architecture firms curtail the residential side of their practices to take on more commercial and institutional commissions, AD100 stalwart Robert A.M. Stern Architects (RAMSA) has maintained an enduring commitment to houses. From a Malibu compound modeled on a Mediterranean hill town to a Shingle Style manse in the Hamptons, their work displays not only a mastery of historical styles but also real dexterity in marshaling traditional idioms to the beat of the contemporary world."
— Architectural Digest

"The volume tours readers through fifteen houses completed by the RAMSA partners over the last decade. Stylistically diverse, historically informed, contextually appropriate, and functionally up to the moment, each offers its own lesson in timelessness." —New York Spaces

"Most people will never own home by Robert A.M. Stern. Most people will never even see a home by Stern, the dean of the Yale School of Architecture and a favorite architect of the tasteful privileged. His houses, all of them extravagantly detailed and rooted in the architecture of centuries past, are hidden behind high hedged or at the ends of long driveways in places like Montecito, East Hampton, Martha's Vineyard and Kiawah Island. But now there is a bit of democratization going on, at least in how Stern's houses are presented." — 1st Dibs Introspective

In the book, the AIA recognizes three years worth of award recipients across four categories: architecture, interior architecture, regional and urban design, and its esteemed Twenty-five Year Award. On one hand, these projects from 2010, 2011, and 2012 constitute a snapshot of architectural production – a moment in time and a record of “excellence” in that moment. On the other hand, it is a snapshot that speaks more broadly about evolving design trends – what has come before, in the first decade of the 21st century, and what we might expect more of in the following decade.

The apartment is the logical evolution of the home in today?s heavily populated world. Restrictions on urban space have obliged people to opt for dimensions that are more limited than those of a traditional house if they are to continue enjoying the advantages of living in a city center. The term "apartment", however, need not be synonymous with lack of comfort or unattractiveness - in fact, the aim of this book is precisely to demonstrate that the most functional small home can also be a magnificent example of innovative and evocative architecture.

Although apartments are becoming an increasingly popular choice for a new home, it is important to bear in mind that the design of a dream apartment is not necessarily simpler or cheaper than that of a family house. Limitations on space force architects to follow two premises: the need for integrated, versatile spaces and the preeminence of functional solutions (although these may vary according to the type of family setup for which the residence is intended). Although there is a strong tendency to flood settings with light, the first priority should be to organize the available floor space along lines that ensure the principle of habitability, even while breaking with traditional approaches to construction - after all, it must not be forgotten that the ultimate aim is not just to admire the resulting architecture but also to live in it!

Dream apartments is aimed at readers who resist the idea of homogenization sometimes associated with an urban apartment. The creative genius of the world's best architects has been put at the service of simple spaces enclosed between four walls that are not so very different in principle from many other apartments in our cities. No elaborate exterior structure can distract the critical eye from the work undertaken in these interiors: the designer, like us, starts from the same point - an empty space - and, through the skilful and ingenious use of construction skills, this can result in apartments as exclusive and inspirational as the ones presented in this book.

Awareness of the benefits of ecologically sustainable architecture has increased throughout the world, particularly over the past two decades. At a point in time when half the world's population lives in cities and nature is being steadily robbed of space, the call is becoming louder for sustainable buildings that save resources and protect the environment. Taking the example of 27 different projects, this book shows how growing urbanization can be combined with ecologically conscious architecture by, among other things, making use of gaps between buildings, innovative techniques, regenerative energy sources and renewable raw materials. Each building is presented with a brief introduction and its "green facts". The publication is rounded out by more than 270 illustrations, plans and computer graphics as well as a glossary.

Buildings are the biggest polluters on the planet, responsible for a far greater proportion of the carbon dioxide emissions that get pumped into the atmosphere every year than cars, planes or factories. Just as we are urged to change our lifestyles to reduce our carbon footprint and consumption of water, there is a great deal we can do to convert our existing homes into greener, healthier places to live. Most homes, even those built relatively recently, are not decorated, designed, constructed or serviced with eco-friendliness in mind. But you don't have to start again from scratch to make a huge difference to the way your home impacts on the environment. From relatively small and economic changes to more dramatic overhauls, there has never been a better time to green your home. Home improvement has a wider remit these days than simply changing the way your home looks or functions. Environmental issues should be part of every decision you make on the home front - from selecting fabric for soft furnishings to designing and siting a home extension. Including tips, advice on material choices and design directions, "The Eco House Book" provides all the information you need to reduce your home's carbon footprint and in the process directly improve the quality of your life.

We also discover different types of renovations, rehabilitations or additions that staged the very heterogeneous and varied ideas of the concept of rehabilitation.
