The Loft, which originally constituted a type of clandestine life, has become a concept applicable to large, renovated spaces, where the existing structure has been incorporated into everyday architecture.
Consequently, old factories, storage areas and warehouses are being transformed to create homes and offices, or commercial studios and shops. The original architecture of these spaces is characterized by the use of materials such as concrete, aluminum, marble and wood, with smooth walls and large doors and windows. The decoration in lofts emphasizes simplicity, adaptability and functionality to create open-plan spaces, with separate rooms being formed using folding screens, medium-height walls or simply pieces of furniture.
There are currently two trends: constructing new homes in the style of lofts, and recycling and re-using those already built as a further step in the development of sustainable architecture.

The enduring success of lofts demonstrates that this particular way of re-evaluating our industrial heritage is more than a passing trend.

Many loft-dwellers, particularly younger people, feel at home in these spaces, which are usually very airy and open, with rooms flowing smoothly into one another.

This sense of transparency has also become an important theme in the design of penthouses, apartments and flats.

Smaller rooms are opened up to create welcoming living spaces, within which cooking, eating, relaxation, watching TV, and other activities can all be accommodated. Bedrooms, bathrooms and dressing rooms too are often designed as one large room nowadays.

This book presents fourteen recently completed lofts and apartments created by renowned interior architects and designers. They provide inspiring examples for anyone intending to create a home or holiday residence in.

After previous publications about the lofts in Antwerp, Amsterdam, London, Paris, Berlin and Scandinavia the publisher Tectum went on a voyage of discovery in search of the lofts of Brussels. This late-in-the-day European capitol city phenomenon has emerged like lightning. It's happened so fast that the supply of unused industrial buildings has been almost exhausted. The enthusiasm generated by the cosmopolitan public there has encouraged the actors in this market to search for new ways to expand on the generally wide perspectives that appropriate this lifestyle. In other words, lofts are experiencing a 'boom-time' in renovation projects and also new buildings. Regardless of the decorative options chosen by the owners Brussels lofts have adapted well to the demands of modern life. Like anthems to the quality of life and boundless creativity, they revere the large spaces and create dreamlike vacuums venerated by playful decor.
