Chris Mitchell, Pilar Guzmán

Видавництво: Artisan

Named one of Elle Decor’s Best Coffee Table Books to Gift in 2022

A tastemaking couple shares their playbook for creating a home that’s both beautiful and comfortable

Chris Mitchell and Pilar Guzmán are design obsessives who both want the same thing: rooms that are spare yet warm, layered yet clean, current yet timeless. Rooms that never forget the real humans — with all their needs, hopes, emotions, aspirations, and even spills — who live in these spaces. Over the course of six ever more ambitious home renovations, they’ve cracked the code on how to achieve this.

It’s a simple formula, one that lies in mixing modern design with timeworn materials — in particular, white oak, brass, and bridle leather, all three of which become richer, mellower, and burnished with patina as they age. Add a few essential lessons (Decorating by Mood, Borrowing from the Best) and a nine-point manifesto that covers everything from lighting (rooms should feel like lanterns at night), to the use of black as an accent, to the intention that every space should serve multiple purposes, and the result is Patina Modern, a uniquely inspiring and practical design guide.

The book leads by example, as the authors reveal in room-by-room detail the full evolution of their homes, including a Brooklyn brownstone and two classic Hamptons “cottages.” Along the way, we come to not only understand just how they see and think but also learn what they’ve learned, getting an education in color, proportion, paint, and the world of modern furniture design, for which the authors have a special passion.

Tools, principles, and the power of designing around the things you love — this is the gift of Patina Modern, showing just how to put it all together to create your own beautiful spaces.

Shauna Varvel, Alexandra Black

Видавництво: Vendome Press

An intimate tour of quintessential Provencal style, featuring chic homes and interior details inspired by this picturesque region

Thirty years after Peter Mayle documented his farmhouse renovation in bestseller A Year in Provence, the French southeast continues to seduce interior design devotees. But the era of colorful rusticity and shabby chic has since been replaced by a far more nuanced approach in line with contemporary tastes and needs. Provence Style showcases this new direction, featuring Shauna Varvel’s eighteenth-century Rhône valley farmhouse — Le Mas des Poiriers — as an exemplar.

Named for the working pear orchard on the grounds, the property was reimagined by Varvel and noted local architect Alexandre Lafourcade, who transformed an outdated structure into a luxurious and contemporary expression of Provençal style. Alexandre’s mother, renowned landscaper Dominique Lafourcade, designed the extensive gardens.

With her exquisite home serving as an archetypal starting point, Varvel goes on to explore the architectural and interior elements that are part of the reinvented Provençal aesthetic. Featuring a selection of homes created by noted interior designers, Provence Style beautifully illustrates the textures, furnishings, fabrics, color pairings, motifs, and accents that define each area, from kitchens, living spaces, bedrooms, and bathrooms to garden terraces and courtyards.

About the Authors:

Shauna Varvel began her career in public relations with Estée Lauder in New York and Tokyo. After many years of renting summer homes in Provence, Varvel and her family finally chose one to call their own, taking on the renovation of a 200-year-old farmhouse outside Avignon, France. The project has been celebrated by numerous publications, including VerandaTown & Country, and Fortune magazines.

Alexandra Black has written widely on cultural and material history. She is the author of Living in CubaThe Japanese HouseDusk Till Dawn, and The Fashion Book, and has contributed to ElleVogue Living, and Gourmet Traveller.

William Smalley, Edmund de Waal, Harry Crowder, Hélène Binet
ID: 17058
Видавництво: Thames & Hudson

An elegant presentation of interiors for introverts, placing the memorable work of London architect William Smalley alongside buildings around the world that have inspired his practice.

Quiet Spaces places the work of architect William Smalley alongside spaces that have inspired him. Places of private contemplation – calm spaces to read a book or listen to music in, to walk through or simply be in – they are spaces that achieve a rare sense of repose and peace.

From his own Bloomsbury Apartment and projects in the UK, France and New York, the book expands to include the work of other architects: a sixteenth-century villa by Palladio, houses in Mexico and Sri Lanka and the Secular Retreat in Devon by Swiss master architect Peter Zumthor. There are also places of making and displaying art: simplicity in Barbara Hepworth’s garden and studio in Cornwall, and intimacy in Kettle’s Yard gallery in Cambridge.

Specially commissioned photography by Harry Crowder conveys the atmosphere of the spaces. A foreword by acclaimed potter and writer Edmund de Waal records the small, unspoken ways in which we relate to buildings and how they come to have meaning for us.

About the Author:

William Smalley established his studio in London in 2010 with the simple aim of making beautiful spaces and places. He has since worked around the UK and abroad. He has been described as an architect of rare sensibility, and his work as having the simplicity of a limewashed medieval building, filtered and made lucid through a completely modern sensibility. Edmund de Waal is an internationally renowned artist and writer, best known for his large-scale installations of porcelain vessels, often created in response to collections and archives. He published his bestselling family memoir, The Hare with Amber Eyes, in 2010. He lives and works in London. Harry Crowder is a British photographer, based in London and working nationally and internationally, focusing on interiors and architecture. His work seeks to capture the feeling of being in a space. He travelled extensively with William in the shooting of this book. Hélène Binet is an internationally acclaimed Swiss-French photographer based in London. She studied photography in Rome, and over more than thirty-five years has captured both contemporary and historic architecture. She is a fervent advocate of analogue photography, working exclusively on film.

Ralph Lauren
ID: 17216
Видавництво: Rizzoli

A stunning celebration of Ralph Lauren’s signature home collections — including the designer’s own homes — which have inspired the world of interior design for nearly half a century.

The cinematic vision of Ralph Lauren is brought to life with a stunning and intimately written book that spans decades of innovation and influence by the iconic American designer. Ralph Lauren: A Way of Living, published by Rizzoli New York, commemorates the 40th anniversary of the home collection with the first comprehensive volume dedicated to the signature style of Ralph Lauren and his pioneering lifestyle approach to design. From trailblazing innovations that revolutionized the home industry to conceptualizing residential retailing and perfecting the art of hospitality, Lauren has created a multifaceted world that evokes emotion and inspires a more beautiful way of life.

This special volume presents a visual timeline of Ralph Lauren’s remarkable history as a lifestyle innovator. Lauren’s unparalleled ability to seamlessly blend fashion and the home is illustrated with the groundbreaking designs and innovative use of materials that have distinguished the home collection since its inception in 1983: menswear-inspired Oxford Cloth bedding that required the creation of special looms and took two years to refine; the sleek RL-CF1 chair, crafted of carbon fiber and inspired by Lauren’s McLaren F1 racecar; and an appreciation for a timeworn, weathered aesthetic, as exemplified in the iconic Writer’s Chair with its hand-burnished leather and rich patina. Historic achievements such as the opening of his first New York City flagship on Madison Avenue – which invited guests to experience the complete World of Ralph Lauren in a residential environment – and his renowned restaurants that offer the epitome of gracious hospitality, demonstrate the magnitude of Ralph Lauren’s influence on the worlds of lifestyle design and hospitality. The timeline is complete with quotes from distinguished members of the design world and prominent figures of our culture including Oprah Winfrey, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and architecture critic Paul Goldberger.

Ralph Lauren’s signature ability to create transportive environments begins with his private homes that inspire his iconic lifestyle collections. Ralph Lauren: A Way of Living offers an in-depth look at all the places Lauren calls home, from a sprawling ranch in Colorado and an island retreat in Jamaica, to a Fifth Avenue penthouse overlooking Manhattan’s Central Park, a seaside home in Montauk and a country estate in Bedford. Lauren’s homes are deeply personal expressions of his vision for living; captivating imagery is complemented by essays and descriptions written in his own words that intimately express the meaning of home and share inspiration and anecdotes for each residence. The photos of Lauren’s captivating homes are followed by a celebration of Ralph Lauren Home’s lifestyle collections – cinematic worlds that are brought to life with iconic imagery showcasing Lauren’s pioneering lifestyle approach and all-encompassing home collection.

Ralph Lauren: A Way of Living honors the life and work of a true visionary and innovator. Ralph Lauren’s monumental impact on the way we live is as recognizable today as it was groundbreaking 40 years ago. His vision is not about trends of the moment, but is built upon values and things that last, and his legacy will continue to shape the places we call home.

Rocky Mountain Modern is a collection of the most inspiring modern residences in the Rockies, a region with a surprising but deep history of modernist design

Rocky Mountain Modern presents the most inspiring modern residences set within the stunning landscapes of the Rockies. Perched on cliffsides or nestled into verdant valleys, with expansive picture windows framing breathtaking vistas and natural materials such as wood and stone interpreted in new ways, these striking homes reveal modern living at its best in the mountains.

Indeed, modern design has a deep connection to the region: in the 1940s, Aspen, a former mining town in the Colorado Rockies, became an unlikely bastion of modernism, hosting some of the world’s leading designers, including Herbert Bayer, Eero Saarinen, Buckminster Fuller, and Victor Lundy. Over the ensuing decades, a regional modernism developed that blended clean lines, open volumes, and glass walls with the natural features of the rocky landscape and a vernacular that had adapted to the extreme environmental conditions.

Rocky Mountain Modern celebrates this enduring tradition of modernism through the most remarkable residences in the region, designed by such architecture studios as Selldorf Architects, Olson Kundig, and Allied Works in Aspen, Telluride, Vail, Sun Valley, Jackson Hole, and other picturesque locales across the Rocky Mountains, from New Mexico to British Columbia.

Steven Volpe and Mayer Rus
ID: 14500
Видавництво: Rizzoli

The first book on the work of Steven Volpe, a designer acclaimed for his grand-scale, bespoke interiors and his impeccable craftsmanship that blurs the line between art and furnishings.

Steven Volpe combines a minimalist approach with a classical sensibility and a connoisseur’s appreciation for authenticity. Adept at mixing pieces from different periods — eighteenth-century pieces combine with midcentury furniture and contemporary art, for example — Volpe brings a richness to his modern interiors.

Volpe was one of the first to champion loft living, moving into a 75-year-old converted warehouse, but he brings his classical training into the modern spaces he favors. “I learned what was appropriate and proper, and now I, too, can break those rules,” he says. One of the ways Volpe breaks the rules is by melding art with decor in his interiors, endearing him to a sophisticated, artistic clientele.

This volume showcases ten recent projects, exploring work in a range of spaces, from New York City penthouses and modernist California homes to a traditional London townhouse. Each project displays Volpe’s refined sensibility and understated luxury, showing how he creates thought-provoking environments that quietly stimulate all the senses.

With stunning photography and in-depth essays by Volpe and Architectural Digest writer Mayer Rus, this handsome volume offers inspiration and ideas to designers, art lovers, collectors, and homeowners.

About the Authors:

Steven Volpe founded Studio Volpe in the 1990s in San Francisco. Studio Volpe has been published in Architectural Digest, the New York TimesWSJ: The Wall Street Journal MagazineElle Decor, and other international journals. Mayer Rus is the West Coast editor of Architectural Digest.

Buildings and spaces bearing traces of the past that are integrated into new functional and artistic concepts are galvanizing the architecture and design scene. As a result of the increased awareness of sustainability issues and growing appreciation for existing building structures more and more often the decision is being made to convert rather than demolish – sometimes also because of economic considerations. This volume explores the question of the functional and creative possibilities emerging from revitalization that respects existing structures.

The projects carefully selected for this volume demonstrate their worth through sophisticated concepts of utilization and ingenious approaches to design. The existing building structure is not renovated or even restored, but rather left as it is found with traces of past uses, often of its demise, preserved, sometimes carefully enhanced. Whether through aggressive contrast with the new or an interpretation of the existing spaces and surfaces, the interventions always show respect and consideration and establish an enthralling relationship between the old and the new.

With a focus on Schumacher's greatest contemporary patterns -- everything from classic stripes and exuberant florals to edgy animal prints -- this accessible and highly useful style guide is organized thematically by chapters such as "Sensual & Spare"; "Preppy"; "Ladylike"; "Exuberant"; and "Opulent," with each featuring a stunning selection of patterns along with inspiring interiors designed in the same spirit. To help readers better understand their style preferences, every chapter begins with a questionnaire, for example: "Are You an Acolyte of High Style?"
