An authoritative volume on the most innovative new residential design in cities around the globe

This carefully curated book presents twenty-five new and recent spaces for city living. Author Ron Broadhurst has selected projects that represent a set of ideas that can be described as belonging particularly to our time and which will shape how we think of living in the city in the future. Where the great experimenters of the last century were stripping away ornamentation and creating free-flowing spaces for the first time, today’s innovators are pioneering research in the potential of new materials for both formal invention and environmental sustainability and creating bold and sophisticated essays in the adaptive reuse of spaces originally designed for other purposes.

With the newest work from such design luminaries as Andrée Putman, Annabelle Selldorf, and Richard Meier, as well as emergent talents like Barbara Bestor and Messana O’Rorke, The Urban House is a uniquely coherent volume on the best in new residential design.

About the Authors:

Ron Broadhurst is the author of Houses: Modern Natural/Natural Modern and Next Houses: Architecture for the Twenty-First CenturyRetreat: The Modern House in Nature Pritzker Prize–winner

Michael Hall

Видавництво: Aurum Press Ltd

The English country house reached its apotheosis in the nineteenth century.

Designed by the most eminent architects of the age, the houses were bigger, more elaborate and more lavishly furnished than ever before, becoming a byword throughout the world for luxury, technological innovation and convenience of plan.

Michael Hall's new survey draws on the Country Life archive to present the most complete visual record yet published of the Victorian country house. Chronologically arranged to span the decades from the 1830s to the 1890s, the houses range from the High Gothic of Tyntesfield to Ferdinand Rothschild's flamboyantly French Waddesdon Manor and Philip Webb's Arts and Crafts interiors at Standen.

Victorian houses have suffered more from sales and demolitions than houses from any other period. The Country Life images are the only record of great houses such as Wrest Park, Thoresby Hall and Hewell Grange in their heyday. Houses that have survived with their interiors intact but are little known to the public are also featured, such as Flintham Hall and the Earl of Harrowby's Sandon Hall. Here, too, are spectacular colour photographs of some of the most celebrated houses of the period, from A. W. N. Pugin's Scarisbrick Hall to J. D. Crace's astonishing interiors at Longleat.

With over 150 superb photographs and a commentary by one of the world's leading authorities on the subject, this book provides an excellent overview of a major period in British architectural history.

Michael Hall is an architectural historian and the Editor of Apollo magazine. A former Architectural Editor and Deputy Editor of Country Life, he is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, a trustee of Emery Walker's Arts and Crafts house and Chairman of the Victorian Society's activities committee. His books include The English Country House: From the Archives of Country Life, also published by Aurum.

For any house-proud owner of a Victorian property, this book represents a unique and invaluable resource. Packed with information about Victorian architectural ideas, building methods and materials, it includes a wealth of practical advice about the maintenance and conservation of Victorian homes. Part 1 provides a concise overview of the development of the Victorian house, the wide range of architectural styles that came in an out of fashion over the period, and the lifestyles of the original owners the houses were designed to accommodate. Throughout, the emphasis is on family houses of various sizes rather than the great houses of the aristocracy, which are discussed only in relation to their influence on contemporary builders and architects. Part 2 discusses structures and materials, covering brickwork, stone, renders and stuccos, roofs, woodwork, windows and doors, ironwork and conservatories. In each case there is comprehensive advice on symptoms of trouble, techniques for preservation and restoration, and the correct choice of materials. Part 3 covers services - fireplaces and chimneys, lighting, kitchens and bathrooms - all subjects requiring particular sensitivity to achieve a satisfactory compromise between preserving the spirit of the original building and meeting modern standards of comfort and convenience. Part 4 examines all aspects of interior decoration, including plasterwork, decorative tiles, paint colours and finishes, wallcoverings, curtains and blinds, and floorcoverings. The book is completed by lists of further reading, places to visit and useful addresses, including those of specialist suppliers and contractors.

The owners of the acclaimed stores and decorating firm Circa Interiors present eight stylish, beautiful homes blending comfort, beauty, and function with classic Southern hospitality.

A house with an open door is like a friend with an open heart: inviting, generous of spirit, and constant at the core. In their first book, Jane Schwab and Cindy Smith present beautifully arranged interiors in which the trademarks of their style — subtle color palettes, graceful furniture, an emphasis on comfort and entertaining — harmonize to create fresh yet classic rooms.

Walking the reader through each home with their characteristic Southern charm, they share their vision and process, from big-picture topics such as room flow and furniture plans, to the importance of entryways and setting a beautiful table. The lessons also extend from the interior to the garden, as Schwab and Smith discuss how outside spaces can become natural extensions of the home for entertaining.

Throughout, they share specific ideas for arranging rooms to welcome one, two, or four people as comfortably as fifty, establishing multifunctional, adaptable gathering places that are both gracious and functional for the family of the house as well as their guests.

About the Authors:

Jane Schwab and Cindy Smith have been partners in Circa since 1988. Schwab attended Parsons School for Design and spent several years working at the New York firm of Marshall Schule Associates. As a student in France, Smith developed a love of antiques, which led her to launch Circa Interiors & Antiques in 1979. Bunny Williams is an acclaimed interior designer and the author of four books, including An Affair with a House.

The inimitable style of renowned French interior designer Madeleine Castaing, chronicled in-depth for the first time. While many were drumming to the beat of modernism in the early- and mid-twentieth century, French antiquaire and decorator Madeleine Castaing created her own look that was a unique blend of neoclassicism, Proustian romanticism, and pure wit. Her distinctive aesthetic vision has inspired tastemakers on both sides of the Atlantic, and her devotees - both then and now - are legion. Ocelot carpeting, opaline blue, "coolie" lampshades, and an eclectic mix of neoclassical furnishings ranging from English Regency to Napoleon III all formed part of the vocabulary of "le style Castaing." This lavishly illustrated volume - the first on her work - explores in-depth the elements of her style, and examines how she crafted interiors so emotive that visitors felt that they had stepped into a Balzac novel or a Proustian recollection. Her entire life and career are chronicled, from her early years in Montparnasse, the epicenter of artistic activity in Paris, to her incomparable country house Lèves and her legendary shop on rue Jacob in Paris.
