Brooklyn today fosters creative communities as never before, and they have cultivated a renegade approach to style — one rooted in broad-minded eclecticism and independence. Brooklyn Interiors roams through twenty-four homes that embody this spirit—from brownstones and row houses to lofts and apartments. Each one exemplifies a knack for beautifully reconciling a respect for tradition, an embrace of modernism, and an appreciation for the handcrafted. In these spaces designed by the individuals who inhabit them, a rallying ideal comes into focus: to carve out one’s own niche within the urban environment. This is what makes the Brooklyn lifestyle so compelling for people around the world.

About the Author:

Kathleen Hackett is a contributing editor at Elle Decor and writes frequently for Veranda, House Beautiful, and Southern Living. She has cowritten more than fifteen books on cooking and interior design.

Whether renovating, restoring, expanding, or building new, we all share a longing for the values that hark back to the Arts and Crafts era. The lush woodwork, ingenious open plans, and fine finish details are symbolic of a time gone by. Or are they? As Treena Crochet amply illustrates in Bungalow Style, recreating the beauty of these Arts and Crafts gems without sacrificing our modern lifestyles is not only feasible but also deeply rewarding.

Over 300 photographs offer a host of ideas, while case studies and sidebars show real-world examples and offer advice on how to incorporate period-authentic details in your own home. This extensive collection of beautifully photographed interior architectural elements is an indispensable source of information and inspiration for anyone interested in these special homes.

Three Decades of Decorating Elegant and Comfortable Houses

"You learn from people with great taste,” says Bunny Williams. She should know. As a novice, Williams worked for legendary decorators Sister Parish and Albert Hadley, absorbing everything she could of their peerless design sense. Striking out on her own, she rose to the top rank of the interior design profession, where she has stylishly remained for the last 30 years. Now, it’s our turn to learn from her.

Part memoir and part how-to manual, Bunny Williams’ Point of View showcases many of the drop-dead chic but always cozily comfortable residences whose interiors Williams has designed during her astounding career. As Williams tells it, every design decision she makes is based on a bedrock principle: “Knowing what you value is essential.” Her conviction that every person’s home should manifest their personality guides her as she creates environments that fit each client precisely, “like a couture suit.”

By showing you how to plan and then accomplish that plan for each room of your house, Williams inspires you to take account of your own values - and to realize your personal vision of how you want to live. As she says about the book: “My point of view will help you discover yours.”

Bunny Williams is renowned for her glamorous design and attention to every little detail in her clients’ homes. Using her incredible knowledge of design and decor, and drawing on her wealth of experience, Williams takes the reader through several homes room by room, showing creative ways to organize and add personal touches. From dining rooms (place a chest of drawers near the dining table to store flatware, napkins, place mats, and votives) to lighting (place sconces on the wall at eye level to cut the glare from ceiling lights), and pets (find interesting flat-bottom bowls for water - small Chinese fish bowls or the bottom of a porcelain tureen work perfectly!), Williams empowers the reader with her practical and inspiring tips for making a house a home.

This beautifully illustrated book, a companion volume to the best-selling En passant par la demeure, presents three new extraordinary residences decorated by noted French interior designer Jean-Loup Daraux.

Located in the south of France, these homes showcase the designer's ability to create rich compositions - executed in with ageless furniture, antiques, contemporary artwork, and imaginative finishings - that synthesize tradition and innovation.

All the spaces in By the Light of the Sea resonate with the spirit the Mediterranean and are unmistakably French by design.

The chic of a converted garage, the elegance of a simple French farmhouse, and the allure of a seaside cabanon are all captured in stunning photographs by Mario Ciampi.

Skulls, butterflies, hunting trophies, ancient Egyptian artifacts, the alleged skeletons of mythological creatures, and many other mysterious oddities fill cabinets of wonder. A centuries-old tradition developed in Europe during the Renaissance, cabinets of wonder (also known as curiosity cabinets) are once again in fashion. Shops, restaurants, and private residences echo these cabinets in their interior design, by making use of the eclectic vintage objects commonly featured in such collections.

Cabinets of Wonder showcases exceptional collections in homes and museums, with more than 180 photographs, while also explaining the history behind the tradition, the best-known collections, and the types of objects typically displayed. Offering both a historical overview and a look into contemporary interior design, this extravagantly illustrated book celebrates the wonderfully odd world of cabinets of wonder.

Whether at camp, at the lake, in the mountains or high off in the backwoods, we all cherish our memories of summer vacations at the cabin. Maybe it was enjoying the coziness of log bunk beds, playing games with cousins and friends, diving off wooden-plank docks, fishing from the riverbank, being lulled by the rustling breeze or mesmerized by the riffling stream or slapping waves - whatever, these experiences linger in our memories.

The homes and camps presented in Cabins are making new memories for today’s families. Some are contemporary homes that incorporate rustic furniture; some are traditional cabins with great rooms and high ceilings. All exude the warmth of wood railings and stone.

Engaging, impassioned, and always entertaining, Kylloe has an eye for rustic detail and signature style of photography that makes this, his thirteenth design book, exquisite in every regard. These homes feature idyllic settings for family fun and entertaining, masterfully crafted rock fireplaces and sensual rustic furnishings to covet.

Featuring homes across the upper United States, from New England and New York to Montana and Washington.

Ralph Kylloe is a leading authority on rustic furniture and architecture and is the owner of the Ralph Kylloe Gallery at Lake George in New York’s Adirondack Mountains. He is the author of thirteen previous rustic design books, including Cabin in the Woods, Cabins and Camps, Rustic Artistry for the Home, Rustic Traditions, The Rustic Cabin, and Adirondack Home.

In the summer of 1937, Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus and a professor at Harvard’s new Graduate School of Design, rented a house on Planting Island, near the base of Cape Cod. There, he and his wife, Ise, hosted a festive reunion of Bauhaus masters and students who had recently emigrated from Europe: Marcel Breuer, Herbert Bayer, László Moholy-Nagy, Xanti Schawinsky and others. Together they feasted, swam and planned their futures on a new continent, all sensing they were on the cusp of a momentous new phase in their lives. Yet even as they moved on, the group never lost its connection to the Cape Cod coast. Several members returned, when they had the means, to travel farther up the peninsula, rent cabins, buy land and design their ideal summer homes. Thus began a chapter in the history of modern architecture that has never been told--until now.

The flow of talent onto the Outer Cape continued and, within a few years, the area was a hotbed of intellectual currents from New York, Boston, Cambridge and the country’s top schools of architecture and design. Avant-garde homes began to appear in the woods and on the dunes; by the 1970s, there were about 100 modern houses of interest here. In this story, we meet, among others, the Boston Brahmins Jack Phillips and Nathaniel Saltonstall; the self-taught architect, carpenter and painter Jack Hall; the Finn Olav Hammarström, who had worked for Alvar Aalto; and the prolific Charlie Zehnder, who brought the lessons of both Frank Lloyd Wright and Brutalism to the Cape. Initially, these designers had no clients; they built for themselves and their families, or for friends sympathetic to their ideals. Their homes were laboratories, places to work through ideas without spending much money. The result of this ferment is a body of work unlike any other, a regional modernism fusing the building traditions of Cape Cod fishing towns with Bauhaus concepts and postwar experimentation.

Whatever their style or period, carpets and rugs will give an interior an individual stamp and determine the atmosphere and relevance of the room.

This book caters to all tastes, with photographs of interiors featuring breathtaking carpet designs. Within its pages you will find plenty of unexpected inspirations and surprising combinations. The carpets and rugs in this book range from bold and colourful eye-catchers to traditional and minimalist designs that tie the whole room together.
